Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable. The figure in the margin indicates full marks.

Group – A (Any Three) (3 X 14=42) 1. A) Describe the Valence bond theory. Define three types of hybrid orbitals that may formed by an atom with s and p orbitals its valence shell. B) What is radius ratio? Calculate radius ratio values for coordination number six. 2. a) Describe the band theory in metals. Use energy level diagrams to explain the differences between conductors, insulators and semiconductors. b) Why electrical conductivity of metal decreases as the temperature is raised but the opposite occurs with semiconductors. 3. What are transition elements? Discuss the different oxidation state of 3d- trasition elements. 4. a) What do mean by inert pair effect? What effecty will it cause in the oxidation state of group IIIA elements? b) LiR is important compound. Write down its important uses with reaction and its structure. (6 X 7=42) Group – B (Any Six) 1. What is lattice energy? Use Born Lande equation to calculate lattice energy of MgO .Given A= 1.74, n = 7, r0 = 2.01 A0 , N= 6.02 X 1023 , e = 4.8 X 10-10 esu. 2. though the ionic radius for M+3 in group IIIA increases down the group but not in the regular way observed in group I and II . Why? 3. What is ziggler Natta catalyst? Write down its mechanism. 4. Write down variation in ionization potential of 3d series elements. 5. Explain the C.C.P. an H.C.P. arrangement in metallic crystal. 6. List he physical properties associated with metals. 7. What do you mean by MOT. According to MOT explain the structure of CO and NO molecule with energy diagram. 8. What are reasons for Lithium having a greater tendency to form covalent compounds than the elements in the group? Group –C (Any Eight) (8 X 2=16) + 1. What effect will you observe when + ve ion like Ag polarizes the different halide ions? 2. What is Cluster compound? 3. What is Frenkel defects? 4. What do you understand by the term- octahedral site or hole? 5. M.M. value for Ni.- complex is 2. Predict the structure of this complex. 6. Covalent compounds have low melting point and boiling point. Why? 7. Predict the hybridization in following molecules: a) BF3 b) I38. What do you mean by cohesive force? 9. What are interstitial alloys? 10. Why Potassium violently react with water than Na? 11.Why alkali metals are reducing agent? 12. Why only s- block elements impart coloration?
