CHARLIE CHAPLIN

Personal Information. His full name was Charles Spencer Chaplin. He was born in London, on the 16th April 1889. He belonged to a very poor family. His mother’s name was Hannah Smith,who suffered from schizophrenia. He had many wives :Lita Grey, Mildred Harries, Paulette Goddard, Oona O`Neill. He had a daugther called Geraldine and another called Josephine.

Personal information He was exiled from America on 17th September 1952, accused of belonging to a Communist Party He died in Cosier-sur-Vevey (Switzerland) on 25th December 1977.

Professional Information He went to Hollywood with the great comic Mack Sennett. He participated in a lot of successful movies. His first movie was “Charlot Journalist”. He worked for several film companies, but with the Keystone company, Charlie filmed more than 30 films. He filmed “The Kid” in 1921, a very famous movie. In 1917, he moved to “First National”, a company where he made the majority of his movies.

Professional Information In 1936 the first viewing of “Modern Times” took place…one of the most famous films in history. He started to do normal movies like “The Great Dictator” (1940) and “Limelight”. His last film was “La condesa de Hong Kong” (1966). The film was a big failure.

Chaplin’s Prizes He received an Honorific Oscar for his film “The Circus”. A special Bafta prize, for all his career. 4 Kimea Junpo prizes; in 1925, 1927, 1953 and 1961.(best Foreign Film) . A Jussi Prize in 1974 (Best Director). An Oscar for the music in “ Candilejas”. A Gold Lion for his career. Bodil Prize in 1949 for the best American film (Monsieur Verdoux).

He was nominated for... Two Oscars in 1928: Best Director and Best Actor. Four Oscars in 1940: best film, best original script, best music and best actor (The great dictator). An Oscar for the best script in 1947. Bafta prize for the best film (candilejas)
