Chapter 4 Summary of Results, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter includes (1) Summary of Results, (2) Conclusions, and (3) Recommendations. Part One, Summary of Results, states the salient points of the study. Part Two, Conclusion, presents the termination drawn from the result of the study. Part Three, Recommendations, offers some suggestions in terms of the findings and conclusions arrived at. Summary This study was conducted to find out the literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at West Visayas State University. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

54 1. What is the level of literary interpretation skills of the BSED Social Science and Mathematics Majors of the College of Education at WVSU as an entire group? 2. What is the level of literary interpretation skills of the BSED Social Science and Mathematics Majors of the College of Education at WVSU when classified as to their major? 3. Is there a significant difference between the levels of literary interpretation skills of the BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU? The hypothesis advanced for this investigation was: There is no significant difference between the level of literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at WVSU when classified according to major. The respondents of this study were 58 BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at West Visayas State University, school year 2006-2007. The descriptive method of research using a test in

55 literature was administered in the study. Among the statistical tools employed to analyze the data gathered were the mean and standard deviation for descriptive analysis and t-test for inferential analysis. Based on the data gathered, the following were the findings: 1. BSED Social Science and Mathematics major were generally perceived to have a very satisfactory level of literary interpretation skills. 2. There was no significant difference that existed in the literary interpretation skills of BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors. In other words, regardless of their field of specialization, the level of their skills in interpreting a literary manuscript was just the same. The field of specialization does not affect the skill of the students. Conclusions Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were made:

56 1. Generally, BSED Social Science and Mathematics majors of the College of Education at West Visayas State University have very satisfactory literary interpretation skills. 2. The field of specialization was not a significant factor that influenced the students’ skill in literary interpretations. Recommendations Based on the aforementioned conclusions, the following recommendations were advanced: 1. The administrators need to implement programs that could help students to develop their skills in interpreting literary pieces such as in poetry, short stories, novels and fiction. 2. Literature teachers can make recommendations to the higher offices concerning literature classes to make possible the employment of more learning opportunities that promote more relevant and challenging activities in literature. School teachers should be able to emphasize the

57 greater need for striving towards literary competence by creating more conducive learning situations beneficial to the students. 3. Literature teachers should give more emphasis in higher-level cognitive domains like application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation to enhance the student’s critical thinking. 4. The school should give equal emphasis on the students in terms of activities, preferences and interests, especially if they concern literature regardless of their field of specialization. 5. The researchers finally, would like to recommend further studies in the line with this field so that more reliable and formal findings could be established with a wider scope of respondents and with consideration of other variables.
