CORRELATION ACAD RLE 35 Chapter III RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the method of research used, the sources of data, the population and samples, the research instrument used and the data gathering process. Furthermore, it discusses the statistical treatment of data.
Research Design This study utilized a quantitative design to find out the correlation of academic performance and related learning experience of Level IV nursing students of Aquinas University of Legazpi, S.Y. 2009-2010. The data were collated and presented in textual and tabular forms to provide a detailed description of variables.
Sources of Data This study used secondary sources of data since the data needed were obtained through academic grading sheets and clinical evaluation sheets of the respondents which were gathered from the Nursing office of Aquinas University of Legazpi. Other sources included books, magazines, journals, related literature, unpublished theses and Internet websites.
Population of the Study The total population of the study was 4th year nursing students of Aquinas University of Legazpi, S.Y. 2009-2010.

Data Gathering Utilizing the records whereby containing the list of academic grades and RLE grades of the respondents, hereunder, is an explanation how the said tool was obtained and later subjected to its final cause. Following the proper protocol, permission was secured from the concerned authorities, where the researchers were given access to the respondents’ records. A stratified random sampling was employed based on the list of the population, thus determining the sample size of the study from each block. Using the systematic stratified random sampling method, the particular respondents were identified on each stratum. Whereas, all the aforementioned procedures were done, tabulation, tallying, then analysis and interpretation followed.
Research Instrument
CORRELATION ACAD RLE 37 The tool utilized in this study was the respondents’ records consisting of the list of academic grades in major nursing subjects and their RLE grades. Whereupon, such records were procured from the office of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Aquinas University, Legazpi City.
Statistical Treatment To get the mean, the academic performance results were multiplied to the number of the students and the product was divided by the total number of students (Levin, 2003). To get the Standard Deviation, the number of students was multiplied to the square of the difference of academic performance results and mean. The product was divided by the total number of the students and the result of the square root of its quotient was the standard deviation (Levin, 2003). Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, the data gathered were treated. This formula was used to determine if the two variables have correlation with each other (De Leon, 1992).
