CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents various literature and studies that are related to the research topic which is the significance of Paskotitap Festival to the Pasigueños.

History of Paskotitap Festival Rivera (2018),who is one of the heads of Tourism of Pasig City stated that Paskotitap Festival started at 2007 in the previous administration of Honorable Mayor Robert C. Eusebio. His wife, Former Pasig City Mayor Maribel Eusebio, was the one who conceptualized the festival. It was created to make the Christmas of Pasigueños joyful, delightful, and colorful. According to The City Times (2009), the second grandest lights and sounds float parade was seen again in December 14, 2008 by the Pasigueños, tourists and visitors especially the companies of Universal Robina Corporation, Ortigas Group of Companies, Robinsons Land, Pasig Contractor’s Association, Aeternum Gardens, and etc. Enhanced floats amazed the Pasigueños, tourist, and visitors. Santolan High School who owns the Pampanga’s Parol Float was named as the grand winner. Pasig Catholic College won the first prize in the Best in Costume category for their Jester themed costume. The City Government of Pasig presented a new and improved Paskotitap Festival in December 20, 2009. The Pasigueños and the visitors especially the tourists were satisfied again by that year’s presentation when the eight participants from the different barangays presented their floats escorted with their dance choreography for the annual Page | 7

parade. The Barangay Maybunga won the Best Float category with their “North Pole Christmas” themed float. Barangay San Joaquin won the Best Performance category and Barangay Rosario won the Best in Costume category. Extra enjoyment was added because of the participation of the Street and Carnival Performers, Extreme Sports Athletes and the Pasig City Band who marched from Tiendesitas up to Pasig City Hall. Mulan, Up, Hansel and Gretel, The Rescuers, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Thomas the Train, Alice in Wonderland, Pinnochio, Little Mermaid, and Dumbo impressed the Pasigueños and the other visitors and tourists last December 12, 2010. “Christmas through the Eyes of the Child” was the theme of the float parade that was presented by the City Government of Pasig with the participation of the Rotary Club of Mutya ng Pasig and the affiliation from the private sectors. The Santolan High School besides winning the Best in Costume award, also won the first place for their adapted presentation of the movie Up. As indicated by Discovery-Philippines(2010), “We super enjoyed watching all the beautiful floats during the recently concluded Paskotitap Festival in Pasig last Sunday, 12th of December 2010. We are very lucky as the parade passed by our street so we did not have to go too far just to watch it. The theme was fairy tales so there was Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Mulan, Up the movie, and so much more. It was like being in Hong Kong Disneyland once again.” According to The City Times (2012), the kids and the community cos-players that joined the parade enjoyed the festival so much in December 12, 2011. Their enjoyment increased when they have seen the elegant floats of the famous superheroes and characters. The streets became happy and colorful because of the elegant floats and Page | 8

dancing contingents that is heading in front of Pasig City Hall where the crowd are waiting together with the respective family of honorable Mayor Bobby Eusebio with the City officials. As mentioned by TasteofGoodness (2012),the floats are really amazing, huge, colorful, beautiful and elegant in different characters of Disney Land like Kung Fu Panda, Buzz Light Year and Woody of Toy Story. They also have super heroes like Batman and Superman. In the starting line of the parade they saw some costume players or cosplayers who walked with their robots costume. People from different ages from kids to adults had fun with that particular wonderful event of the town. They knew for sure that there are also people who are not residence of Pasig who watched the parade. And they love the Superman float that pulled the slay with gifts. According to Livelifeandlove (2013), every year, event takes place at the same venue. It was recognized as one of the most glamorous parade of floats carrying favorite movie themes. Just like the past years, it became an integral part of the holiday season every December. All floats was represented in a unique way carrying distinctive characters with different movie theme. The big vehicle carrying a huge generator, and the entire platform was fabulously decorated following their own theme and it shines remarkably vivid at night with the multi-colored lights attached to the whole surface of the float last December 10, 2012. For them, all floats appeared to be very creative and remarkable to the eyes of the passers around. First glimpse, you’ll surely stop and park your vehicles. They had a fun night photographing all the floats but, also had a hard time looking for the best spot to shoot. As mentioned by Cauriz, V.J. (2018), San Joaquin Kalawaan High School won the first prize for their Avatar themed float and dance Page | 9

choreography. The entire venue was filled with too many people and overcrowded in December 13, 2013. They cannot control the flow of crowd to move a little bit. They took time appreciating every float. Just like the past years 2011 and 2012, it was a project of the Rotary Club of Mutya ng Pasig and Ortigas group of Companies with the help of participating schools, Barangay and City officials. Thirteen Disneyland themedfloats represented such as; Hello Kitty, Esmeralda, Puss in Boots, Tinkerbell, Despicable Me, Cinderella, Rio, Turbo, Iron Man, Bug’s Life and Turbo. They had a good choice to pick up feminine side on Cinderella and Tinkerbell. The costumes are so glamorous and it was almost perfect. The Santolan High School took the first place for their theme “Cinderella”. Paskotitap Christmas Lights and Sounds Parade 2014, as narrated by Live Life and Love, is a beautiful exhibition of electronic floats sponsored by participating institutions and schools. What an extraordinary works of art regarding the tertiary colors of their choice was even more emphasized in December 14, 2014. It was just the right time to be there because images will show details that it is worth it. It was completely beautiful, you can view all the real colors of floats at daytime. All floats are dazzling but what an effort. It was a long daylight exposure for me battling the intense heat from the sun. Paskotitap parade was scheduled at 6:00 pm, they went to check all the floats 3 hours earlier and that was their first time to cover it at daytime. The “Frozen” themed float and dance choreography by the Nagpayong High School won the grand prize. “It was truly was a beautiful Christmas evening last Sunday December 13, 2015. It was a magical night! This year’s Paskotitap Christmas Lights and Sounds presented 14 popular animated themed floats from action, epic, fantasy and adventure movies. Superb floats to represent realisticaly all the 14 movie-themed concept in distinctive characters; Dragon Page | 10

Ball, Sponge Bob,Pokemon, One Piece, Minion, Star Wars, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Jurassic World, Lord of the Rings, Scoobie Doo, Doraemon and Transformers. It was funfilled excitement to see all floats colorful decorations, set up with eccentric lights, beautiful music that goes well with the float theme and participating students with elegant and ravishing outfits.” The Santolan High School’s “Cinderella” themed choreography and float won the first prize. Amommabroad (2017) explained that, they have been slightly annoyed by the abundance of tarpaulin traffic announcements. Their interest was piqued as the cautions were due to holiday celebrations. There was the tree lighting ceremony, Christmas gatherings and the Paskotitap Parade today, December 10, 2016 at the SM Hypermart. They consulted the Google about the float parade and was immediately sold by the epic displays of floats and intense costumes. They said that they had always wanted to attend a festival in the Philippines but they had not yet. And Paskotitap Festival is definitely not even in the same realm as province festivals but much preferred by their palate.San Joaquin Kalawaan took the first place this year. December 10, 2017 was a beautiful Christmas evening based on Live Life and Love. The annual and the most spectacular parade held every December in the city of Pasig is the ‘’Paskotitap Christmas Lights and Sounds Parade. This year’s yuletide parade showcased 15 different animated movie- themed floats of seasonal delights such as Dragon heart, Mulan, Mother Goose, Sing, My Little pony, Paw patrol to mention a few. With a great audience, the parade started moving around 6 in the evening from Tiendesitas near SM Hypermart followed a route all the way to Pasig city hall for the High school Dance Competition. The Eusebio High school was named as the grand champion Page | 11

for their “PAW Patrol” themed dance choreography and float and took home the prize money of ₱250,000.00.

Activities of Paskotitap Float Parade is one of the activities in celebrating Paskotitap Festival. The activity has different themes every year. The theme depends on what is popular to the people among these days. The floats are not as that easy to do as howthe audience see it. Pasigueños, especially the kids are always waiting to see the colorful floats that they are eagerly waiting for every year. Luna (2018) insisted that these floats are sponsored by different private companies like Universal Robina Corporation, Ortigas Group of Companies, Robinsons Land, Pasig Contractor’s Association, Aeternum Gardens, and etc. The parade starts from Tiendisitas and stops at Pasig City Hall.The floats are accompanied by the dancing contingents. According to the Pasig City Traffic and Parking Management Office (TPMO), many roads are closed due to the route alternation for the Paskotitap Festival. The parade often causes traffic around the streets where it passes by so the City Government of Pasig assigned alternative routes to the motorists to avoid the inconvenience during the festival. The traffic enforcer that the researchers interviewed stated that when the Paskotitap Festival is being held, they are assigned in different spots and they perfectly take-over every streets to control the traffic. Road closures and diversions are implemented.

The other event is the dance competition which is held after the parade in front of the Pasig City Hall. The different participants came from different schools of Pasig City. Their dance choreography depends on the theme of their respective float. Rivera (2018) insisted that San Joaquin High School, Nagpayong High School and Santolan High School are the most frequent winners of the dance competition. Rivera (2018) also stated that after the parade, the floats are displayed along Caruncho Avenue to be seen by the Pasigueños , visiting tourists and respective visitors. After the event during Christmas season, the floats are moved to Rain Forest Park on January to be displayed too. When there is lack of spaceto display the floats, the floats are directly dumped into the warehouse and some are used for material recycling which may help the Pasigueños to suffice what they need in terms of education, occupation and daily needs.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology of research and the procedure in doing the instrument and the validation. This chapter discusses the research instrument for gathering data, the data gathering procedure, the data processing method and the statistical treatment that will be used by the researchers in the analysis and interpretation of data.

Research Design The researchers will make use of the descriptive method because the problem existed in the present condition. Descriptive research helped the researchers to determine, describe or identify ideas, data, sources and establish why it is that way or how it came to be as they analyzed carefully about the information that they collected for their research study.

Population and Sample The respondents of this study are the residents of Pasig City. These respondents came from different barangays in the City of Pasig and participated in the celebration of Paskotitap Festival. The researchers decided that 30 respondents will take part in the study.

Page | 15

MANGGAHAN HIGH SCHOOL Manggahan, Pasig City

Instruments of the Study The researchers will use a locally-constructed questionnaire to gather the data for the study. Part I of the survey questionnaire will be the general profile of the respondents which includes their age, gender, civil status, and educational attainment. Part II will focus on the usual concerns of the organizers in celebrating the Paskotitap Festival including the preparations and activities, on how does Paskotitap Festival affect the relationship among the Pasigueños and the worth of the Paskotitap Festival to the Pasigueños.

Data Gathering Procedure The researchers carried out the following procedure for the data gathering. Since the researchers are minors, the first thing they did was to ask permission from their parents or guardians if they are allowed to do the research outside the campus. With the approval and the permission of their parents and guardians, the researchers were given a letter to ask the organizers of Paskotitap Festival to conduct the study. With the approval of the organizers of Paskotitap Festival, the researchers proceeded to the next step which is conducting the ocular and initial interview.

Validation of Instrument The first draft of the questionnaire will be first presented to the adviser for improvement. It will be revised based on the recommendations given by the adviser. Also, the questionnaire was further improved through the help of other English teachers. Comments and suggestions will be considered in the final revision of the questionnaire.

Page | 16

MANGGAHAN HIGH SCHOOL Manggahan, Pasig City

The second instrument used was the interview to the organizer, Mr. Noel T. Rivera, and to the thirty respondents who participated in the celebration of Paskotitap Festival. This was to know vital information about the significance of Paskotitap Festival to the Pasigueños.

The researchers will also conduct a pilot – testing in order to know the weaknesses of the questionnaire. Pilot – testing will be carried out using 30 students of Manggahan High School who are not really included in the study.

Statistical Treatment of Data This study will use the sample frequency and percentage method in gathering the data.

Percentage. The percentage will be used to establish the profile of the respondents. This was a useful indicator for determining which variables are most or least favored by the respondents of a research study (Garcia, et al. 2007)

The formula is:

𝐟

𝐏 = 𝐍 𝐱 𝟏𝟎𝟎%

Page | 17

MANGGAHAN HIGH SCHOOL Manggahan, Pasig City

Where: P = Percentage

f = Frequency

N = Total number of respondents

100 = constant

Weighted Mean (WM). The mean is a measure of central tendency. This reveals as to where the majority of the respondents answer to a question cluster. This was also used to describe the composite rating of the respondents per item.

The formula is:

𝑾𝑴 =

∑ 𝒇𝒘 𝑵

Where: WM = symbol for weighted mean

Σfw = sum of the products of the frequency and weight; and

N = total number of respondents
