Satisfaction of Students in the Highest Section towards the Three Educational Variables as perceived By Junior High School Students of Selected Secondary Main Schools in Cavite

CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction:

Across the years, numerous studies were conducted pertaining to the key issues and problems of Philippine Education System. Our educational system has been rocked by controversies which have remained unabated up to this day. It is said that for an educator to be effective in relaying knowledge to learners, one should know their needs and backgrounds. Understanding the unique needfulness of learners is said to be an essential tool in the teaching-learning process. Instead of focusing solely on effectiveness of teaching techniques this study focuses on the satisfaction of students in the highest section (commonly branded as “cream section” or “star section”) towards their teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids provided by their respective schools. Almost every student aspire to be part of the top class and one the reasons is the positive discrimination. Among the 12 main schools across Cavite province we visited, six of them still has the Ability Grouping practice (Track System) - the most achievers are grouped together in a section and known as the section one. And then the rest to be heterogeneously

grouped but unintentionally, students other than the first section were grouped according based on academic and non-academic factors.

One of the most significant factors in the teaching-learning process is also one of the most commonly overlooked. Studies shows that student satisfaction has a dramatic impact on the effectivity of knowledge acquisition and therefore a direct effect on the success of meeting learning goals and objectives. This time, it’s all about the students in the higher section and their satisfaction towards different academic and interpersonal dimensions and areas of the high school environment (teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids provided by their respective schools). Student satisfaction influences not only how much a student enjoys their time at school, but also how well they do. Their grades, course participation, relationships with lecturers, attendance and employability once they leave are all, to a certain extent, reliant on how much they enjoyed their time at school and how engaged they were. As such, not only is student satisfaction vital for promoting life at the institution, but it can also yield an important impact on a standing in both local and global rankings. The six main high schools in Cavite province are Dasmarinas National High School – Main (4th District), Trece Martires City National High School (6th District), Tanza National High School (6th District), Andres A. Nocon National High School (formerly Governor Ferrer National High School (6th District), Imus National High School (3rd District) and Bacoor National High School (2nd District). Upon completion of the study, this will provide a holistic

view of the satisfaction of higher section learners of the aforementioned schools. The researchers would present the result to the administrators of the school for further deliberation and in hopes of helping meet the student’s expectation benchmark. Objective of the study

In Philippines, group-specific learning is a routine. Grouping students by their prior attainment or “ability” in specific subjects is a common practice in some main secondary schools in the province of Cavite. With the students in the highest section of the six main high schools mentioned as respondents, the goal of this study is to identify the satisfaction of these students towards different academic areas and interpersonal dimensions of the high school environment in their respective schools (teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids provided by their respective schools). Statement of the Problem

1. The main concern of this study is to find out the satisfaction of students in the highest section in 3 educational variables as perceived by junior high school students of selected secondary Main Schools in Cavite these educational variables are: a. teacher’s teaching strategies b. classroom environment c. instructional aids

2. What is the importance of identifying and understanding the level of satisfaction of students in the highest section of selected Junior High Students? 3. What is the desired outcome after meeting the satisfaction of the students in the highest section? Theoretical Framework

According to Colwell (2006, p. 53) stated that student affairs professionals must be colleagues with “shared values, goals, language, and committed to creating a single cohesive educational environment and experience for each student.” According to Flanagan (2006), students who feel connected to their institution both academically and socially are more likely to graduate. Examining student needs is important. Brock (2010) states that it has become evident that student services are associated with student persistence in completing their education. In order to understand why, first student needs must be discussed. This study strives to identify the satisfaction of students in higher section towards different academic areas and interpersonal dimensions of the high school environment in their respective schools (teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids provided by their respective schools). The study has a quantitative attempt to identify the essence of what students in the highest section wanted to experience in terms of instruction received from the teachers,

classroom environment and the instructional aids provided by their respective schools. Conceptual Framework

Satisfaction of Students

Towards Teacher’s Teaching Strategies

Towards Classroom Environment towards Classroom Environment

Towards Instructional Aids

Higher grades, interactive course participation, better relationships with lecturers, positive attendance pattern and high employability rate once they graduated.

Discussion: The study has a quantitative attempt to identify the essence of what students in the highest section wanted to experience and primarily their satisfaction in terms of instruction received from the teachers, classroom environment and the instructional aids provided by their respective schools. A survey will be conducted to the students in the highest section of selected Main Schools in Cavite province (only those who

practice ability grouping). Once data is gathered, an analysis and conclusion will be provided. Scope and Limitation

This study will utilize a convenience sample. This study has six participating schools who are practicing Ability Grouping up to this day. The mentioned six main high schools in Cavite province are Dasmarinas National High School – Main (4th District), Trece Martires City National High School (6th District), Tanza National High School (6th District), Andres A. Nocon National High School (formerly Governor Ferrer National High School (6th District), Imus National High School (3rd District) and Bacoor National High School (2nd District). The researchers decided to only invite junior students in the highest section in the aforementioned schools for S.Y 2019-2020. Significance of the Study

Understanding student satisfaction with their teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids provided by their respective schools can be useful for institutions to help them to identify their strengths and pinpoint areas that could be improved. Determining student satisfaction within the areas above should go beyond simply understanding their perception of student needs and services, however it should entail an in-depth focus on the student experience. To understand the experience fully, it is not enough to know how much students are satisfied with student services. It is important to understand what factors

contribute to student satisfaction, how student services departments are developed, models of student affairs that schools can use, and how the needs of students can be addressed by the services offered. Definition of terms

Classroom Environment – the social climate, the emotional and physical aspects of the classroom that is believed to have an impact to the learner’s behavior and peer interaction. Educational Variables – these are the 3 major areas of educational set up that the study aim to measure namely teacher’s teaching strategies, classroom environment and instructional aids. Education System – a group of institutions (ministries of education, local educational authorities, teacher training institutions, schools, universities etc.) whose primary purpose is to provide education to children and young people in educational settings. Group Specific Learning – the type learning process and technique specifically designed to a group of learners with unique abilities and needs. Heterogeneously Grouped – is a placement of students of unique abilities distributed in various classrooms of a certain grade within a school. Highest Section – is considered the most highly regarded section in a school. This section is the target respondents of this study.

Instructional Aids- refers to any material or device used to assist the instructor in preparation and presentation of the lesson. Interpersonal – the relationship and or communication of students, teachers, administration, staff and other people that is closely related to the student in the school. Participants – these are the people (learners) and institutions who acted as the data source of the researchers. Quantitative – is the type of study used in this research using statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. Teaching-learning process – it is the process of relaying information, concepts, knowledge, skills and change of behaviour that includes a teacher as a facilitator and learners as the center of the process. Teaching Strategies – the repertoire of teaching techniques and methodologies followed by the teachers in a school to help the knowledge of acquisition process to be efficient and effective. Track system/ Ability Grouping - a system whereby students are separated into different groups or classes according to test scores or relative scholastic ability, as to assure that gifted students are not inhibited by slower learners. Satisfaction – the behaviour that researchers wanted to measure using a convenient sample (survey).
