Topics of Discussion 

03/25/09

Students will use their knowledge of decimal places to help them write a decimal number as a fraction in terms of place value. Students will then use that fraction and reduce it to lowest terms.

3

Name the place values What is the place value of the nonzero digit? 0.4 0.04 0.004 0.0004

03/25/09

Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten thousandths

4

Write the number as a fraction using place value. Write the nonzero part of the decimal as a fraction over the place value and reduce the fraction. 0.4 0.04 0.004 0.0004 03/25/09

4/10 = 2/5 4/100 =1/25 4/1000 = 1/250 4/10000 = 1/2500 5

Try these: Put the nonzero part of the decimal over the place value. 0.425 = 425/1000 = 17/40 (divide both by 25 to simplify) 0.33 = 33/100

Decimals to Mixed Numbers If the decimal number has whole numbers also, write the fraction as we have practiced and add the whole number to the front. Examples: 2.625 = 2 + 625/1000 = 2 + 5/8 = 2 5/8 4.3 = 4 + 3/10 = 4 3/10 03/25/09
