What is change management? Change management is a structured approach to change in individuals, teams, organizations and societies that enables the transition from a current state to a desired future state.
Change management in construction sector
Construction work deals with a lot of resource allocation (in terms of man, material, and machine) as well as time constraints. It involves unpredictable conditions due to open work environment. Sometimes it is economical to adopt a change in management and avoid rework on problematic tasks . The control tools used are network diagrams and process charts which are not sufficient. Thus, a dynamic process model to control change and manage resources is a necessity.
Need for change management in construction sector Construction rework cycle framework is not sufficient In spite of advances in construction equipment there are cost overruns and chronic schedule delays. Involvement of unpredictable conditions are there thus a construction process model must be capable of handling control issues Construction process model requires more flexibility in determining project scope and work dependencies than other project development model.
Types of change management Individual change management
Organizational change management
Managerial change processes
Note:-The change in task “X” can be intended(managerial) or unintended (unintentionally – due to low work quality, poor conditions or external factors) .Any change can lead to subsequent changes further.
Change and Rework In construction “change option” (implementing managerial change) is more common since “rework option” (implementing rework) is perceived to have a bigger impact on construction performance than the change option. By opting for change one can avoid rework on problematic tasks which require more resources.
Difference between change and rework
Approach to change management in construction Change management is very important in the construction sector hence by developing a dynamic construction project model one can have effective management and policy making both at strategic and operational level.
When your strategy, execution and interactions are optimized, balanced and integrated, then the three circles will overlap equally and this is the desired state. This point of overlap is called the nucleus of sustainability and it allows your organization to successfully implement change and improvement programs. Our goal is to provide a dynamic project model which will assist you in the continuous process of creating this alignment.
Generic process model of change management
Dynamic project model This is a dynamic project model developed with effective change management and construction policy-making both at strategic and operational level.
Basic operations involved Plan for change:Anticipate problems People problems Time problems Resource problems
Evaluate/Control change:Control time Control cost and performance indicators
Prepare for change:Prepare people Schedule change Allocate resources
Carry out change:Delegations to staff Motivation
What are people problems? One faces a lot of manpower problems during construction operations. Thus an effective manager needs to: Identify and remove restraining forces (Eg:- Unnecessary workforce employed in wooden form working) Carry out the change (Eg:- Remove additional workforce ) Freeze the situation by reinforcing the new behavior (Eg:Adopt aluminum formwork)
Combating time problems. Time problems
Use of networks(Eg:- CPM network) Plan operational sequencing Identify critical activities Identify potential problems
Use of charting techniques (Eg:- Milestone bar chart ,time grid diagram etc.) Schedule time Allocate resources Monitor progress
Resource problems Use of budgetary control Plan cash flows Control expenditure Monitor performance indices
Apart from all this by allocation for proper resources and by monitoring the progress regularly the resources can be utilized judiciously and effectively.
