CENSUS MAPPING ACTIVITIES
Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India Ministry of Home Affairs New Delhi
Census Mapping Activities
• Adoption of GIS tools by Census Organization in late nineties has accelerated the process and enhanced the quality of the maps. • The Census Organization has the requisite infrastructure and capability for generating theme based maps using GIS. • In 2001, Census GIS was introduced which allowed generating thematic maps based on Census data on an interactive basis using GIS technology.
Census Mapping Activities
• Pre-Census (To provide updated administrative unit maps to Census functionaries to ensure that there is no overlapping or omission in the area coverage)
• Census (Layout maps are prepared by the Enumerators/Supervisors)
• Post-Census (To prepare various thematic maps on demographic and socio-cultural aspects for inclusion in Census publications and to publish Census Atlases)
Pre-Census
The organization prepares administrative boundary maps of States Districts Sub-districts (Tahsil/ Taluk/ PS/ CD Block) Villages Towns and Wards in towns for proper coverage of the entire geographical area of the country for use in house listing and Census Enumeration operations of Census-2011.

The new initiative
The value addition this time is detailed digital geo-referenced maps of the Capital Cities (33) in the country showing each building /house, road networks, lanes, by-lanes and important landmarks features for each ward of the Capital City to ensure that the entire area is covered without any omissions and overlapping. Contd….
Pre-Census
• With this initiative, this Office has taken up the work of preparing geo-referenced digital map of each ward in the Capital Cities of the country. • Based on satellite imagery and collection of information on population by conducting field survey, census enumeration blocks are demarcated for use by the Enumerators during House listing and Housing Census. • This Project is being implemented with the support from Survey of India who have been entrusted with the job of digitization of imagery and linking of field data.
Pre-Census
The Progress made so far The field verification of all the 2073 wards have been completed. Finalization of digital maps and linking of attribute data is likely to be completed by December 2010 for use in 2nd Phase of Population Enumeration in Feb. 2011.
Pre-Census
Availability of Town Maps • Most of the town maps showing ward boundary are old and the extent and boundary of towns usually changed • Number of Wards also undergoes change in many cases. Therefore, as like earlier censuses, Town Maps are also updated
Pre-Census
The Constraints • All the Capital cities has inherent expansion in horizontal & vertical directions • Resulting change in ward boundaries and number of wards. So the ward boundaries and CEB’s are bound to change For example- Jaipur Delhi Hyderabad Bangalore Bhopal
66 Wards in 2001 - 70 134 Wards in 2001 - 298 35 Wards in 2001 - 100 100 Wards in 2001 - 198 66 Wards in 2001 70
now now now now now and so on ………
Pre-Census
The Ward Maps The digital maps are prepared using high resolution Satellite Imagery procured from Survey of India followed by field survey for verification of each building structure and collection of information on each house/building. Each building structure is drawn as a polygon as seen from the top by the satellite.

Post-Census
• The post-census mapping includes dissemination of the census data through thematic maps on various Census themes at State/District/sub-District or village level allowing proper spatial analysis. • These are published in various map products like Census Atlases, Districts Census Handbooks (DCHB) and various datasheets on different demographic as well as socio-economic themes.
Post-Census
•During each census, the organization produces more than ten thousand administrative and thematic maps. • These are available for the user agencies, planners, researchers, students and policy makers. • Census Atlas, Administrative Atlas, Language Atlas, Historical Atlas of India and Map profile of each state are some of the prominent decennial publications of the organization.
Post-Census
• Besides, maps are also published in special reports, monographs and publications like Temples of Tamil Nadu, Regional Division of India at the National and State levels. • District maps showing village boundaries is one of the prestigious product of this organization.
