CATHOLIC REFRESHER
Come, Holy Spirit Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. V. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created. R. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, by the light of the Holy Spirit, You have taught the hearts of Your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to know what is truly right and always to rejoice in Your consolation. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Beatitudes
Jesus of Nazareth
Various Perspectives 1. As encouragement to the downtrodden. 2. As an accurate description of the disciples before His eyes. 3. An invitation to the individual and the Church to follow the crucified Christ
Blessed are the poor in spirit… …for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. • “Poor in spirit” is the self-designation of the pious (Qumran) • This is never truly a materialistic poverty • Not solely spiritual either “Kingdom of Heaven” or “…of God” 1. Interior - Man’s interior is the Kingdom of Heaven 2. Ecclesiastical - The Church is the Kingdom of Heaven 3. Christological - Jesus is the Kingdom of Heaven in person
Blessed are the meek… …for they will inherit the earth. • Much overlap between this Beatitude and the first • The Greek word praus - or the Hebrew anawim - is used to designate God’s poor and meek • Zechariah 9:9-10 - Announces a poor king - insight into Palm Sunday What does it mean to inherit the earth? • Hope for land was part of original promise to Abraham • Promise of land means more than just possessing a piece of ground Implications for the Eucharistic Assembly
Blessed are those who mourn… …for they shall be comforted. Two types of mourning: 1. Mourning out of despair 2. Mourning out of gratitude Popular image: Mary at the Cross True com-passion means “suffer with”
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake… …for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. This Beatitude is very closely related to the previous one. The proper form of mourning is non-conformity with evil. Those who choose righteousness instead of behavior that “everyone is doing” make an accusation against the world. Those who mourn are promised comfort. Those who are persecuted are promised the Kingdom of Heaven, just like the “poor in spirit”.
