Cataloging Series for Improved Student Access By Elaine Shelburne, Teacher Librarian Ogden City School District Search Authority File

 Confirm whether or not the personal name and the series are established.  If an authority record does not exist, you use the series and names on the book.  Does an authority record exist for each of these? If so, these are the forms you use.  Go to Library of Congress Authorities: http://authorities.loc.gov/ Check to See if Authority is Established

If NO –use a 490 AND an 800 field  Enter the item statement in a 490 with volume or numbering information as indicated on the item and add a 8xx field for the authorized form of the heading followed by volume or numbering information according to the format shown in the authority record

Examples – Authority Not Established

NOTES:

If NO – Use a 490 0 or you can also Enter the statement in a 500 note If not authorized as a series, use 490 and 800. 490 0_ No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency; |vv.1 8xx No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series [loc statement]
