Caption for Images 1 - 4 These photographs are part of a series depicting how different linear structures and compositions within photographs can guide the viewer through the photograph. The images use converging and regressing lines to pull the viewer into and through the image, guiding them through the different features and making them view the picture in a very prescribed manner. Within landscapes these liner aspects, and the directional quality of them, create an idea of journey, travel and motion. Caption for Images 5 – 8 These photographs are a commentary on suburban life, heavily inspired by Gregory Crewdson and observations made through suburban life. The photographs were inspired by the infatuation that exists within suburbia, one of contest and curiosity in terms of neighbourly affairs and activities. The images use light sources as figments of curiosity, with anonymous figures taking a voyeuristic interest in the inherent illumination. The figures represent the curious neighbours whilst the light represents the contest, gossip or other figment of interest. Caption for Urinal Image A promotional piece for a friend’s band, The Usual Subjects, this image was meant to represent a group of individuals who take their music seriously but their image less so. I think the picture reflects an obvious cohesive identity for the band whilst incorporating elements of each of their personalities on an individual basis through their clothes and behaviour at the urinal. This picture was printed and signed at gigs as promotional material. Caption for Images 9 – 12 These images were an endeavour into anti tourism, the practice of avoiding the more obvious landmarks a city such as Florence Italy has to offer for a more unusual artistic venue. I tried to find unusual angles, strange aesthetics and odd balances of colour to try and build a surreal feeling to the photographs. I really like the resultant, powerfully composed images that give an entirely new feel to such a historical city. Caption for Ishaan Image Using Photoshop I created this vector illustration of a friend in response to the work of very material orientated artists, in particular Jenny Saville and Frank Auerbach. I wanted to see if it was possible to create a similar variation of strokes and an unusual tonal quality through digital painting. I am quite pleased with the result, although it lacks some texture and the subtle blending of the painters in question it does pay some tribute to the expressionist nature of the paintings, creating something some thing quite unusual in terms of a digital piece. Caption for Snap Image This illustration was inspired by the recent Samsung promotion illustrations by Vault 49 for Samsung’s new MP3 player. I wanted to replicate the use of strong vector shapes and silhouettes with photographic images. The subject matter itself was inspired by a nature documentary that observed wildlife in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The colours, pictures used and font for the text centre piece are all an effort to represent the North American geography.

Caption for NYE Invite Image This is probably my most highly circulated piece with over 450 tickets sold for this particular event. I was given a brief to design a ticket graphic along the theme of a Winter Wonderland, New Year’s Eve party. I chose a sympathetic colour scheme for the winter theme and in an attempt to inject some class into what would be a ticket for a formal event; I used a flock pattern as a backdrop to the centre graphic. The man in the suit helps establish the formal dress code; the countdown reinforces the New Year’s message whilst also alluding to anticipation in the lead up to the event. Caption for Big Summa Tingz Image Big Summa Tingz was an under 18’s, urban night in a local club in Watford. The brief for a promotional poster was quite loose: a summery, urban theme with a font and colour scheme that would appeal to a mainly female, urban demographic. The central cityscape obviously caters for the urban requirements, with the graffiti inspired fonts reinforcing this. I scanned in drops of spray paint adding texture to the poster and acting as a starry sky for the cityscape. I think the poster carried all the essential information in a functional way whilst adhering to the expectations of the demographic. Caption for Animal Illustrations These three illustrations are to be used in an anti pollution booklet being produced at Exeter university by a geography student there. The images are meant to show iconic animals in various locations and how their ecosystems are being affected by pollution, particularly biological waste. Identifying the origin of the animal and highlighting its situation were highlighted as key features in the brief. Originally I intended this to be a digital project but I wanted a more handcrafted dynamic to suit the eco-friendly nature of the booklet (I also conveniently had stickers of the specific animals mentioned in the brief, horded from the Guardian newspaper). The resultant images are quite powerful, giving you an idea of the plight of the animals in question but also some geographical reference to their situation adhering to the needs of the student. Caption for Beach Work The studies at the left of this piece were preliminary work towards the larger collage of elements on the right. The idea was to create an expressive piece that somehow captured the strong infrastructure of the beach environment, taking inspiration from Antoni Tapies’s work where textures, specific marks and loose connections to real forms are key motifs. The result is a series of marks and textures that form an obvious horizontal direction, in keeping with the linear rock formations and lateral shapes cut by the horizon and other features. The textures achieved are sympathetic to the textures within the photographs and recorded in the sketches with layers of material like the layers of rock and sand. Caption for Life Drawing This is one of my favourite worksheets from two separate life drawing classes. This particular sheet was done using my unnatural, left hand. As a result the lines and marks achieved are different to my normal drawing style, giving a looser, more expressive form to the model. I particularly like the sense of motion the repetitive lines give, a feeling reinforced by the overlapping of three or four separate sketches.
