2007 ART LEADS TO INNOVATION
ART LEADS TO INNOVATION In 2006, The Art Institutes system, a leading educator of students in the creative and applied arts, partnered with Americans for the Arts, the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America, for a national high school Poster Design Scholarship Competition. Hundreds of students entered the competition, in which students created original poster artwork that expressed the slogan—Art Leads to Innovation—and wrote designer statements explaining their poster design concepts and why they want to enter the graphic design field. The competition, which began in February 2006, took place in two stages—locally and nationally. Students submitted their entries to an Art Institute of choice, where local competitions were held in February. These local first place entries, which represented 30 Art Institutes, were placed into consideration for national judging. In April and May, a panel of 13 art and graphic design professionals visited The Art Institutes Web site (www.aii.edu/posterdesign) and scored the 30 entries on a 100point value system. More than $100,000 in scholarships has been awarded to the top 10 students in the national competition. David Rossow, the grand prize winner from Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, received a $25,000 tuition scholarship to The Art Institutes International Minnesota to study graphic design. “If I could make a successful career out of doing what I love, that would be great. My art and design have brought me many opportunities in the past and I hope to continue growing in those fields,” says Rossow. This calendar showcases the top 12 national poster design winners from the 2006 Poster Design Competition. Month by month, these budding designers demonstrate that art spans across time and space to connect us all. Visit The Art Institutes online at www.aii.edu/poster, and Americans for the Arts at www.AmericansForTheArts.org.
David Rossow “... I wanted to show “change” in an interesting way. I did this by picking an ordinary creature and transformed it into a mechanical contraption.”
