From the Pastor’s Desk My Dear People: November 1st was a great feast, “All Saints Day,” but since it fell on Saturday, next to Sunday, it was not a holy day of obligation; and many of us may have missed this celebration. One of the most beautiful doctrines of our faith (articulated in the Apostles’ Creed) is the doctrine of the communion of saints. This means that there is a union between those in heaven, those in the antechamber of heaven, and those on earth who are working toward heaven. The Church gives us a great reminder of our doctrine of the communion of saints when, at the wake, we are told to say this invitation to prayer: We believe that all the ties of friendship and affection that knit us as one throughout our lives do not unravel with death. Let us pray asking God to take (the recently deceased) to Himself. Lord, Our God, the death of our loved one recalls the brevity of our lives on this earth. But death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives…. These ties of friendship and affection, these bonds God has forged in our lives with others, are not broken. This is the highlight of the doctrine for you and me. The concept of celebrating all those in heaven, canonized and uncanonized saints, is so important because this is the feast of many of our relatives, benefactors, and friends. The doctrine of the “communion of saints” includes those who are in the antechamber to heaven. Today’s feast formerly known as Poor Souls is now called ALL SOULS.
Yesterday was the feast of ALL SAINTS, which includes all the souls in heaven. Today’s feast, ALL SOULS, includes those in heaven and those in purgatory, the antechamber to heaven. Yes, there is an overlapping. Some of the deceased will be commemorated twice, on All Saints and All Souls feast days. There must be a purgation for our sins. Hopefully most of us take care of this on earth. However, there is that uncertainty. God just does not tell us who is purified enough on earth. So we celebrate today ALL SOULS day. We know our prayers can help those in purgatory, but we don’t know to what degree. This will be one of the great revelations waiting for us in heaven. So we pray for the deceased especially at the Mass. We are left with the reality that nothing so purifies us as the Holy Sacrifice. It’s greatest meaning is “forgiveness of our sins,” the guilt itself as well as the remains of sin depending on our devotion and God’s mercy. During this month let us remember in a special way all of our deceased relatives, friends and benefactors. With prayers and blessings, Father Muller
