What is a flood? A flood is when water

submerges land and the land cannot soak all of it up. The access water stays on top of the land and collects more water. The more access water, the deeper the water is.

Floods Floods are the most frequent and costly

natural disaster. Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the nation and can happen in every U.S state. Heavy and steady rainfall for hours or days are conditions that cause floods. There is no two floods that are alike because every flood is different.

What can floods do? 

Floods cause a lot of damage to the land and depending on where the flood is, it can damage houses, buildings, roads, and bridges. Rivers that flood can break levees that cost a lot of money to repair and replace.

Types of floods Coastal floods- these floods are caused by severe storms at sea. A tsunami or a hurricane can cause these floods. Catastrophic floods- caused by an unexpected and significant event like a dam breaking. Muddy floods- caused by runoff on farm land such as crops and cause floods that are very muddy. Estuarine floods- caused by sea tidal-surges that are the effect of storm winds

Flood Control In a lot of countries today, the rivers that are prone to

flooding are managed very carefully. Levees, reservoirs, and dams are defenses to flood prevention. Levees- a natural or artificial slope to help keep water levels controlled. Levees are usually parallel to a river. Reservoirs- an artificial lake used to store water that is usually created by building a durable dam.
