t the new SimplyCare Clinic you can be treated for everything from minor emergencies to chronic problems, have a quick turnaround for tests in the on-site lab, and go ahead and fill your prescriptions at the onsite pharmacy. Pretty convenient, right? At SimplyCare, Dr. Ashok Mehat, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Elizabeth Higdon and Medical Assistant Jessica Roberts can treat a myriad of issues, including internal medicine, nerve connection studies, ultra sounds

Patients may be admitted directly from SimplyCare if needed. “I take care of my patients, from my medical office to the hospital,” said Dr. Mehat, “offering continuity of care.” Mehat added that his office will be using, for the first time in this area, a “video visit” through webcams, in which patients may speak with a physician if there are any complications or problems after the visit, without having to leave the comfort of their home or

Some words from your Chamber leaders The Journey Continues… A number of years ago I wrote an article for this special Business Review, and I said that we were embarking on a journey which would see a tremendous transformation of our community. And while we have certainly seen unprecedented growth; I would suggest to you that we have not reached a destination, rather we are continuing to simply enjoy the journey. Our journey has been and will continue to be laden with many challenges and obstacles along the way. Many would say that it is not the obstacles that will keep us down, but how we as a community deal with them that will decide our future. The results of the special census taken this past spring now
show that inside the city limits alone, we now have over 26,000 residents. Keep in mind that there are a tremendous number of people living just outside the city limits that are not included in this total. Consider that the near term projected number of people living within five miles of the Mt Juliet Road – Lebanon Road intersection is nearly 60,000 people and all indications are that this number will continue to grow for many years to come! Many things are fueling this incredible growth; both regionally and locally. It is no secret that as Nashville continues to become home to more and more corporate headquarters, company relocations, business expansions, and new start-ups, people will be moving to the area. And when they
get to the “area” they naturally find themselves looking towards our community. And then when they
The 2008 version of the Mt. Juliet - West Wilson County community would be unrecognizable by former residents who have been gone even 6 months. New stores, whole new shopping centers, new roads and new faces around City Hall are a constant amazement to those of us who are around every day. Ever gone down one of our local roads to discover that there is something new there you had no idea existed? Our famous list of things you could not buy in Mt. Juliet has permanently disappeared and been replaced by the slogan “if you can’t buy it here you probably don’t need it”. With the economy and the price of gas affecting each of us in our daily lives as well as our businesses we have adopted a whole new term ‘stayvacation”. Play here, shop here, eat here and stay here. But we are missing one thing. Unless you are an elementary, middle or high school student you might have trouble
getting an education here. It is now time for the powers that be to focus on us getting an institution of higher learning. Seems I heard
Being raised in Mt. Juliet it is really a pleasure to serve on the Chamber Board and even more a pleasure to chair the Membership committee. I attended Mt. Juliet Elementary, Mt. Juliet Jr High and graduated from Mt. Juliet High School. So, being a part of the growth is bittersweet. I can still recall when we got the first traffic light and thought we had really progressed, well……look at us now. Why is being a member of the Chamber important to
come and see for themselves the true hospitality of our neighbors, the growing number of churches,
schools, and businesses, they are hooked. And herein lies one of our greatest challenges, one that the Chamber of Commerce takes very seriously and is very focused on; making sure that we embrace this new growth while holding near and dear those that have come before us and to never forget how we got here. For every new business that opens in a new building or shopping center, there may be a similar business that has been here for many years just down the road. On our journey we have to be sure that we bring these businesses with us and not simply and suddenly take our business down the street; there has to be a spot for everyone as we look to the future.
At the Chamber of Commerce we are committed to encouraging new business opportunities while maintaining the vibrancy of our existing businesses. We strongly believe there is room for everyone and encourage each of you to support our local economy whenever possible. For a complete list of local businesses that actively support the Chamber of Commerce, please visit our website at www.mtjulietchamber. com or stop by the office for a free hard copy. As we look into our crystal ball and try to anticipate what may be in store for us, it is very apparent that the future looks very bright. Thank you for helping to make our community so special and for joining us as …The Journey Continues…
some time ago that a university to our east was going to have classes in a local church. If they are they are very quiet. Since having additional education either in the form of trade, vocational or
academic curriculum beyond the regular high school graduation is the ticket to success we need to get going and begin to think about providing that. How many times do we preach to our children that a college education is the only stamped ticket available. Even a community college or an off campus site for one of the ones surrounding us is really needed. It’s time now for our elected and self appointed community leaders to get going and make this happen. As 2008 passes into the fall my term as Chairman of the Board of the Chamber has started on the last half phase and passing the gavel to Jason Loggins of Wilson Bank & Trust is on the horizon. This is an active Chamber with Ribbon Cuttings, Business After Hours events, Wine Festivals and Preview Parties, Golf Outings and the Pre-tournament party, education sessions, and numerous other events both small and large to keep us busy. So many times
I have seen people start a new business and use the chamber to their advantage. They have attended functions, met and greeted everyone they came across and used those meetings to further their business. I have also witnessed those who joined and didn’t take advantage of the opportunities given to them. To each their own but they are certainly missing a chance to insure their success. Daily I am reminded of the people I know and friends I have as a result of this association. True, most people who are active around town know at least five living and three dead Realtors but it has really helped I guarantee it. Shortly the Chamber will add to the staff with a much needed membership services person. It is a sign of progress for us and that we are growing with the demand for the chamber services. The City grows with a host of professional people coming on staff so that we have the best possible person
for each and every job in City Hall. We look forward with great anticipation that the next election series will bring professionals to all elected positions both City and County. We have crawled, walked and are beginning to run. Wow! It is wonderful. I am a Realtor with over 20 years of experience and the Principal Broker for Stallings Real Estate & Auction at 3735 N. Mt Juliet Road. I represent commercial, residential, estates and arrange auctions for all types of situations. Those of you who are curious about the building where are office is located (known by old timers as the Monty Mires Building) will be interested to know that it does have a new owner who is refurbishing it both inside and out. Shortly it will have all new landscaping , a new paint job and renovations to the interior. Please feel free to stop by and see me anytime and talk “Chamber.”

Locate your business in the heart of Mt. Juliet: Ashwood Station
I
f you’re looking to start or move your business to a convenient, high traffic area, look no further. Ashwood Station, located at 2500 N. Mt. Juliet Road, is in the heart of Mt. Juliet: across the street from the Post Office, just down the street from City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce, and within walking distance of locally owned and charming shops and cafes. Currently there are three office spaces available to lease. Ken Smith, with Professional Realty Group, said there are many reasons why a business would thrive in Ashwood station, besides being centrally located. “There are three buildings, and they are all fairly new,” Smith said. “They were completed within five years of one another. The buildings being relatively new, but not new construction, means that we are able to offer rates that are better or
less than new construction. New construction is so expensive now, and those costs have to be passed on through higher rents.” Smith said that while the buildings are fairly new, Ashwood

access is a requirement – which is good both for the business owner and the customer. Businesses currently included in Ashwood Station – your business neighbors, if you
will – are a real estate company, insurance company, financial planners, a freight broker, CPAs, a cleaning company, a therapist, a home health care business, a pharmaceutical company, and a mortgage company. Smith added that tenants of Ashwood Station get “individual attention” because the business complex is privately owned by the Voiles family, and Smith’s own office is nearby. “The family is accessible and is able to give Ashwood Station a lot of attention,” Smith said. Smith said the three office spaces he has available are 1,600 square feet, 2,125 square feet and 4,250 square feet. For more information call Ken Smith at 615-773-6009, email him at

This 28,000 square foot complex is uniquely designed and extremely versatile. Offering tenants what they want, each space can be adjusted to adequately meet individual business needs. This is one of the few office office parks in the Mt. Juliet area to offer flex fl ex space. The arched doorways create a warm and inviting entrance for customers and patrons. There is easy access from North Mt Juliet Road and ample parking for your customers. Centrally located this complex is convenient to the US Post Office, Office, City Hall and Interstate 40. Fight fuel costs with improved efficiency If predictions from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) hold true to form, 2008 will not come to be known as the year when oil prices went down. In fact, EIA projections for 2008 indicate the year will see historically high prices for major petroleum products, including the fuel used to keep our cars running. Fortunately, drivers are not entirely on their own when it comes to finding ways to cut costs while not drastically changing the lifestyles they’ve grown accustomed to. Motor oil industry leaders offer the following tips for drivers looking to take some of the edge off what promises to be another year of escalating fuel prices. · Improve your vehicle’s performance. Most drivers would love to improve their vehicle’s performance, regardless of the prices at the pump. But few might be aware that doing so doesn’t take an encyclopedic knowledge of cars. For example, simply replacing conventional lubricants with synthetic oils can greatly enhance your vehicle’s performance. This uniform molecular structure of synthetic oil helps vehicles operate more efficiently by reducing friction and wear, improving function in extreme temperatures that are often taxing on cars using conventional lubricants and, best of all, by improving fuel economy, helping to counter those high prices at the filling station. · Do the little things. When it comes to improving a car’s efficiency, the little things certainly add up. While something such as changing a car’s spark plugs doesn’t seem like a big deal, it is when considering the negative effects of old or dirty spark plugs. Dirty spark plugs do not create the maximum spark, resulting in reduced horsepower and increased emissions. Dirty fuel injectors likewise result in inefficiencies. In addition to improving fuel economy, using
a gasoline additive helps keep injectors clean and eliminates the need for costly injector maintenance or replacement. Another easy change is to replace your vehicle’s air filter. A partially clogged air filter drastically reduces a car’s performance, resulting in higher fuel costs and a much less enjoyable ride to boot. Consult your vehicle manual or mechanic as to how often to change your air filter. · Help the environment and help your pocketbook, too! According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, 68 percent of U.S. oil use is transportation related and the world demand for oil is growing faster than the supply. No wonder we have higher prices. One way to reduce that demand while simultaneously helping the environment is through the use of a premium synthetic motor oil with extended oil change intervals. Premium synthetic motor oils can remain in service up to eight times longer than their petroleum counterparts. Fewer oil changes will not only save you money, but lead to less waste oil as well, which in turn helps the environment. · Lighten your vehicle’s load. Drivers often do things that they might not realize are very taxing on their vehicles’ engines and damaging to a car’s efficiency. For example, excess weight in a car can drastically reduce the vehicle’s fuel efficiency, leading to more trips to the filling station and less money in your pocket. Clean out your trunk periodically and remove excess items. Every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight shaves one mile per gallon off your gas mileage. Another way to lighten your car’s load is to be better at planning. Rather than running errands separately, which leads to lots of stopping and starting, write down what errands need to be run and try and run them all at the same time. This will increase your car’s efficiency while likely leading to less time spent running errands as well.
Making your smile even brighter at Mt. Juliet Family Dentistry
D
r. Eric Scallions knows a great smile when he sees one. And when he doesn’t, he knows how to make it great. Dr. Scallions has been practicing dentistry for seven years, and practicing in Mt. Juliet for the last year and a half. He said he treats people of all ages, beginning with children at age four. “I really enjoy treating the children, and I see a lot of them,” Dr. Scallions said. He’s been seeing so many people, in fact, that he said he will be adding a new associate this fall to keep up the personal care and attention his practice has become known for. The new associate will join the dentist’s “great” staff of two dental hygienists, two dentist assistants and two front desk attendants. Mt. Juliet Family Dentistry
has a convenient schedule as well, and Dr. Scallions is available for Saturday appointments. Walk-ins are welcome, and the dentist is now accepting new patients, families and children, with emergency and same day appointments available. D r . Scallions performs a variety of dental procedures, including exams, gentle cleanings, cosmetic dentistry, whitening, X rays, extractions, custom dentures and partials, root canals, crowns, and delicate children’s dentistry. And senior citizens get a 20 % discount.
The dentist added that his entire office has new equipment and a sterilization room for a clean,
safe experience. “I want my patients to feel as at ease as possible,” Dr. Scallions said. “I understand how some
people might feel uncomfortable going to the dentist, but it’s my hope they’ll feel comfortable coming here.” When Darline Martin couldn’t stand another minute of her toothache she reluctantly visited Dr. Scallion’s office – reluctant because she didn’t look forward to the possibility of having dental work done. “Dr. Scallions pulled the first tooth I’ve ever had pulled,” Martin said. Her tooth, it turned out, had abscessed. “I was prepared for it to hurt, but he did not hurt me. He made me feel very comfortable. And if there
was anybody who knew this was going to hurt, it would be me.” Martin said Dr. Scallions called her to check up on her condition, and when she returned the next week, thinking she had another problem, he X-rayed her mouth and soothed her nerves. “He’s great, and I generally don’t like dentists,” Martin admitted. “But he just made me feel so at ease, I like him a lot and wholly recommend him to anyone.” Mt. Juliet Family Dentistry is located at 66 E. Hill Street. For more information or to make an appointment call 758-2085, or visit www.mtjulietfamildentistry. com.

Scott Thomas Imagery: Mt. Juliet’s premier photography studio
M
t. Juliet is now the home to a new experience in portrait photography and you are invited to see for yourself what makes Scott Thomas Imagery different. The studio is owned and operated by residents Scott and Hilda Thomas. Scott is a graduate of Gallatin High School and MTSU. Before opening their portrait studio in July, Scott focused on commercial advertising photography. Since 1989 his work has taken him to 38 states and 7 countries. When they are not doing what they love best, you can find them with their daughters, Molly and Zoe, sailing on Old Hickory Lake.
Scott and Hilda chose Mt. Juliet because they are looking forward to building relationships with their clients as they grow with the community. They believe this area offers great potential for continued growth and feel there is a need for a local photography studio. “We want to work with our customers and find out what their needs are. Our goal is to build, strengthen, and maintain those relationships,” Scott said. “We believe in a more personalized approach than other studios, we even make house calls. There is simply no better way to save a memory for generations to come than through a photograph.” Their motto is “Share the Love,” and you can do just that with
their exclusive custom photo jewelry, designer hand bags and gifts, or with other boutique items including custom designed cards and announcements. Feel free to drop by anytime for a visit (they even have a special playroom just for kids!). That way there are not unknowns,” Dr. Gnewikow explained. “Every patient and family member knows how hearing aids will work in the real world prior to committing to buying them.” “We offer help for all types of hearing problems, from severe hearing loss, to milder losses that result in misunderstanding some voices or trouble in background noise. We can even help husbands with selective hearing!” Dr. Gnewikow joked. Dr. Gnewikow conducts free hearing evaluations for firsttime patients every Tuesday by appointment. each A Child has been in business for one full year and has become a popular place for parents, home school families and teachers to find learning materials to meet their needs. Richard and Sonia Dorer are the owners and have been in the Mt. Juliet community for 10 years. Richard is a sales rep for a contact lens manufacturer, and Sonia has been a stay at home mom after having taught school for over 10 years. Their son, Charlie, attends Mt. Juliet Christian Academy. The idea for Teach A Child came one day while Sonia was substitute teaching at MJCA. She overheard one of the teachers talking about how she wished there was a teacher supply store nearby, and that was the spark that started Teach A Child. By the time Sonia arrived home that afternoon, she had the name of the business, an idea of an employee and Richard’s enthusiastic support. “We chose the name, Teach A Child, based on Proverbs 16:22: ‘Train up a child…,’” Sonia said. “God truly opened many doors for us and made this possible.” Teach A Child carries a wide variety of classroom
supplies, teaching aides and unique games and toys. Everything in the store is geared toward teaching, whether you are a teacher, parent or grandparent. Right now the store is in full swing helping teachers prepare for the upcoming school year. After the back-to-school rush it will be time to start stocking for Christmas. One of the favorite items Teach A Child stocks at Christmas is their high quality Kid Kraft Kitchens and toys. They also carry a full line of the Melissa and Doug toys. “We are parents, so we try to keep that in mind when ordering for our store,” Richard said. “We always ask if it is something we would purchase for our child.” Richard and Sonia hope that whenever customers leave Teach A Child they know that they have received great service and quality products. “We love our community,” Sonia said. “We believe that our children are the greatest treasures. And our store motto says it all: ‘When you Teach A Child, you touch a life… forever.”
Longtime jewelers grow with community, offer custom pieces
O
ne of Mt. Juliet’s first businesses decided to “grow with the city” and close up shop and relocate to the 103-acre Providence Marketplace. American Jewelry has been located in a small 1,200 square foot building next to City Hall for nearly 30 years and you would be hard pressed to find someone who is not familiar with them and their owners, Dwight and Billie Belew. “Dwight and Billie Belew are like family to our community,” said Mt. Juliet Economic Development Director Kenny Martin. That sentiment is held by many throughout West Wilson County as countless families have patronized American Jewelry for everything from purchasing an engagement ring to celebrating 50th anniversaries. D w i g h t remembered back a few years ago to a Superbowl
party he was invited to held at Windtree Golf Course. “After a few minutes at the party I looked around at everybody and thought ‘I’ve sold everyone in here a piece of jewelry and I’m not ashamed of a single piece of jewelry I’ve sold,’” Dwight said. The Belew’s said their decision to move locations to Providence was a “two prong attack.” “We are kind of being forced to move since the Mt. Juliet Road Phase 2 expansion to five lanes is going to take away our parking lot,” Dwight said. “At that point we had to make a decision. Our decision was to modernize and grow with Mt. Juliet.” Grow is an understatement. Architectural plans for the new store detail over 4 times the square footage of their current store with all the modern features that larger jewelry stores have. Despite the huge expense involved with purchasing their parcel in Providence, Dwight and Billie are excited about the future for their business. “We’ve been debt free for
over 25 years. I bought our current building on the spot in 1979 for $40,000 from former Mayor Wayne Crawford,” Dwight said. “We got in at the very beginning of negotiations and are one of the few places to own a parcel in Providence. The rest are leasing. “It became a real estate adventure.” The new American Jewelry opened this summer with a Hollywood-themed grand opening ceremony, including a red carpet, limo rides and “paparazzi.” We Know Jewelry American Jewelry specializes in large diamonds. If you’re like many people, you’ll stumble over the answer to this question. “Whether you’re positioning your home for a sale or trying to maintain your place in the neighborhood, you need a ‘wow factor’ that stops drive-by traffic in its tracks,” recommends Don Zeman, a former contractor and host of the nationally-syndicated radio show, Homefront with Don Zeman. ‘Awful experience’ spurs MJ dad to start own sports league: i9 Sports
I
t took just one season in a disorganized soccer league and one disappointed daughter to make Ron Jackson decide he wanted to start his own soccer league. “I got into the sports industry because my daughter played in a local soccer league when she was four years old,” Jackson said, “and we – myself, my wife and my daughter – had an awful experience participating in the league. The coach was very nice. However, the organization of the league from start to finish was just awful. The funny thing was that we were not the only parents who were disappointed with the league. There were also several parents who had been with the league for a couple of years who told us, ‘It’s like this every year.’” Jackson said that his daughter decided she didn’t want to play soccer anymore. “I knew she was too young to make that decision based on one season of participation, but I also knew that there were
no other options for soccer in my immediate community,” Jackson said. “So, I thought that I would simply start my own league.” Jackson said he initially wanted to start a basketball league for kids, but after some research he found that there were many aspects of the process that he had not considered. “During the research process I came across a franchise called i9 Sports. I found that i9 Sports had just started offering youth sports franchises,” Jackson said. “I had the passion to organize my own youth sports league and had found a company that could offer the support that was needed to deliver a first class sports opportunity to both the parents and the kids that participated.” Jackson said he started with 80 kids playing in the first flag football league and now have a cheerleading program, soccer, basketball and dodgeball leagues, and over 300 kids playing in the flag football league. “We feel that we make youth sports safe and fun for
kids and convenient for parents,” Jackson said. “All skill levels are welcome. Everyone gets equal playing time and there are no drafts or tryouts.” Jackson added that games are on Saturdays, and there is only one practice per week. An additional benefit that adds to the positive
atmosphere is what Jackson called the Parental Pledge.
“The Parental Pledge ensures that our kids are allowed to compete in a positive atmosphere free of sideline negativity,” he said. “We also conduct a criminal background check on any person who volunteers to coach in our league.” Jackson’s i9 Sports is now accepting registrations for the youth flag football and youth soccer leagues in the Mt. Juliet area, which will being the week of September 6. Registrations will be accepted until the August 30 deadline. The program for boys and girls ages 3 – 14 welcomes all skill levels. “Everyone is given the opportunity to make the most of their abilities,” explained Jackson. i9 Sports has gained national recognition for its fresh approach to organized sports. Participants can expect professional management of all program details, certified officials at every game, round the clock access to league information, standings and team news on the company’s website,
and most importantly, a program that places great value on fun than the score. “People have been amazed at the organization, convenience and fun of our programs,” Jackson said. “Our soccer and flag leagues fill up quickly, so we encourage everyone who is interested to sign up immediately to secure a spot.” For more information, full program details and registration information, visit www.i9sports. com or call (615) 453-0092. “The website allows for a very smooth registration process, league schedule access for parents, game rules, coach guidelines, team and player statistics,” Jackson said. “The website also allows for consistent communication with all of our members so that everyone is on the same page all season long. We truly care about our members and want all of our participants to enjoy an experience beyond the game that they play.”

Design Tip: “Do the unexpected. Don’t be conventional – do the unexpected. Combine colors to create unusual color schemes. An offbeat color palette is more likely to be long-lived than colors and patterns you see everywhere. Create your own color trends and you may hear your guests say, “I never thought of that...”

Don’t let your child get left behind in math this school year
I
t’s never too early for a student to get ahead in math, and once your child is struggling he could get left behind. Mathnasium Director Jon Willis believes that it’s important to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to making sure your child is ready for this year’s math classes, and with the new school year starting now is the perfect time for a quick evaluation of your child’s skills. Willis offers a simple “numbers sense” test for students in first through fourth grades, and if your child can’t solve these problems rather quickly without using his fingers or a calculator, he is lacking number sense. The simple test starts with doubles: What is 7 + 7? What is 7 + 8? Another test involves working with 10s: 7 + ___ = 10? Or, 10 + 7 + ___. Another examples involves 10 more or 10 less, such as What is 23 + 10? What is 75 – 10?
“If a student can’t do the basics he will be struggling with harder problems later on,” Willis said. “Answering these math questions should be done fluently without effort.” Willis said his tutoring service stresses number sense instead of algorithms so that instead of simply memorizing answers the student understands the process. He likened this to when students “cram” for an exam the night before, simply memorizing numbers or dates, then forgets the information in a few weeks. “It is easy to forget something we memorize,” Willis said, “but nearly impossible to forget something you understand.” Willis added that parents shouldn’t wait until December, or after their child’s first report card is sent home to realize he is struggling in math. “Parents should see where their kids stand while the school year is young to avoid getting left behind,” he said. “And just because you’re getting an A in class doesn’t mean you understand.”
Willis gave more examples to test a student in fourth through sixth grades, including multiplication: 8 X 7, 9 X 6, 14 X 10. Again, Willis said a student at these grade levels should be able to answer fairly quickly. Also, parents may ask their children questions about fractions: ¼ of 16 is ___, or 1/3 of 9 is ___. Middle school students should be able to answer questions about percents quickly, such as, What is 8% of 300, or 6% of 250? If your student cannot answer this question quickly there is a numbers sense gap. “It’s so important for parents to gauge where their kids stand when it comes to math before school starts,” Willis said. According to the authors of a report from John Hopkins Center for Summer Learning, “It’s common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.” Willis said that summer is “the best time” to work on math, and his facility does more than just
tutor children – it helps to boost their self-esteem. “Kids do not hate math, they hate being frustrated and confused,” Willis explained. “That’s like me saying I hate golf, so I don’t play it. I don’t like not being good at it. It’s human nature for children to shy away from things they think they’re not good at. Once they open up to it, once that confusion is gone, they become better at it.” There are a half dozen teachers, including Willis and his wife, and the student to teacher ratio is rarely more than three to one. Willis said that while “individual results may vary,” the students who are invested are “doing wonderful things.” And Willis said that 99 percent of the students there are invested and flourishing, and he attributes that to the teachers on staff. The teachers at Mathnasium tutor 2nd grade math through pre-calculus, as well as reading for Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Mathnasium is open Monday – Thursday from “after
school time” until 7 p.m., except for Wednesdays, when it closes at 6 p.m. for families who attend church. Willis said students drop in two to three times a week for a couple of hours, with no appointment necessary. “This business model is attractive to families because it’s convenient,” Willis said. “It can be worked around work and extracurricular activities, around sports schedules.” Willis said the price range is also attractive for families, who pay monthly fees that equal a $20 - $25 visit per child. He said for a monthly fee children can “pop in and do their homework,” or get a jump start and start flexing those math muscles. Mathnasium is located at 3548 N. Mt. Juliet Road. Consider catering an option for your next event and enjoy your party
T
hrowing a bash to share with friends and family is something many people enjoy doing. There are so many events worthy of special affairs, including birthdays, graduations, holidays, and so much more. Part of enjoying the celebration for hosts and hostesses is being able to mingle and share the festivities with guests. But this isn’t always possible when they’re responsible for preparing and serving the food among a bevy of other responsibilities. That’s where hiring a caterer or using a banquet facility can make the party more enjoyable for all involved. According to the National Catering Association (NCA), catering has become the fastestgrowing segment of the restaurant business in recent years. This could be attributed to busier families, where both parents work and the kids are involved in a number of extracurricular activities that take time away from meal and party
planning. That’s where caterers and banquet halls become invaluable. Various Types of Caterers Caterers vary by whether they’re onsite or off-site. Some banquet facilities use a specific caterer for all of their events. Other party rooms allow you to choose the caterer. Find Out What They Provide S o m e caterers simply provide the food, others food and drinks, while still others the entire kit and kaboodle: Food, beverages, linens, service ware, etc. When comparing rates of catering services, make sure you’re comparing apples
to apples. One price may be higher because you’re getting a onestop-shopping package from the caterer. Be Prepared For Discussion When you sit down with prospective caterers, it helps to have certain information on hand. These items include: * number of guests * venue if you’re using an off-site caterer and not going with a particular banquet facility * type of event (social, business) * who is being honored * food preferences and restrictions * budget * type of service (buffet, sit-down, butler-passed hors d’oeuvres)
* theme or mood you are trying to create Book Well in Advance It’s suffice to say that many caterers are busy for peak seasons and holidays, so don’t wait until the last minute to book with one for your party. Generally weddings and large affairs should be booked nine to 12 months before the event. Smaller functions can be booked a few months before. Sign a Contract Make sure that the caterer or banquet facility you choose spells out all agreements in a contract that you both sign. Inquire about contingency plans should there be poor weather or a reason to cancel the party. Find out if it is possible for a taste-testing to try out the food in advance. In terms of money, discuss payment schedules and how gratuities are handled. Also find out how you will be billed if the party runs over the allotted amount of time.
NYPD Pizza voted the best
N
YPD Pizza was established in 1996 out of necessity when native New Yorker Paul Russo was unable to find authentic New York style pizza after moving to Orlando, Florida. The first NYPD Pizzeria location opened its doors in the heart of the city and proved his theory to be correct. The residents yearned for the same top quality pizza he was accustomed to. This Downtown Orlando pizzeria took the city by storm and won countless awards year after year in the local media. It was also rated by the prestigious Zagat magazine and was continuously praised by the community as being the best pizza Orlando had to offer. Not long after the downtown location was thriving, the demand became apparent for another location to soon open in another part of Orlando, which it did. With high demands for this authentic New York style pizza and customer service excellence, founder Paul Russo with input from his father Mariano Russo decided to start the Franchisee Division in 2004. The Mt. Juliet NYPD Pizza opened in April 2007 in the Providence MarketPlace. In addition to its varied and delicious menu, its location, on the corner opposite the Lifeway Christian Store and near the movie theater, has made NYPD Pizza – the only one in Page 16, 2008 Community Business Review
Tennessee – a popular restaurant. Co-owner Cesar Otero traveled from the home offices in Orlando to help Pete and Sue Milonis open the restaurant last year, and now he calls Mt. Juliet home. Otero noted that NYPD Pizza recently won an local award, The Toast of Music City, for being voted best pizza and wings in the Nashville area. “That was great, a real honor,” Otero said. Otero added that each Monday is Kids Night, from 5:30 – 8 p.m., with a balloon artist and plenty of fun for the kids. Tuesday is Two for Tuesday for dine-in customers: buy one specialty pizza and get a second cheese pizza free. Otero said he was also excited about the new NYPD Pizza catering truck, which he called a “mobile NYPD Pizza” that can be rolled out to company parties, picnics, reunions or any large gathering. He said the catering truck will be at the Wilson County Fair this year, as well as the first Wilson County Fall Music Festival to be held at Charlie Daniels Park on September 13. Otero added that NYPD Pizza delivers up to a five mile radius, but will travel farther for larger orders, over $100.00.
Community banking more than a numbers game at Wilson Bank & Trust
I
n the world of financial services, there’s no denying the importance of numbers. Numbers like total assets, deposits and capital can indicate the strength of an organization. Numbers expressed in years can show a bank’s stability, or a lender’s experience. Interest rates and return on investment are numbers that always get special attention from bankers and consumers alike. At Wilson Bank & Trust, each of these figures, and many others, are numbers that any independent community bank would be proud to claim. No complicated calculations are needed to come up with the number that matters most at WB&T, though. Because the number of greatest importance is… one. Number one is where a
Wilson Bank & Trust customer ranks when they require any type of financial service, whether they’re in person, online or on the phone. Through exceptional
when they conduct business with the bank – because they are. And one place is all a person or business has to look to find the product they need. Under
all ages and occasions; an almost endless variety of mortgage and consumer loan options; financial experts ready to offer sound investment advice; and
service, the goal at WB&T is to have each customer feel like they’re the single most important account holder, investor or partner
one roof at WB&T, customers can find one of the region’s best interest rates on a free checking account; specialized savings accounts for
plenty of specialty products and services – all with great rates and personal attention in a hometown atmosphere.
Wilson Bank & Trust also helps to bring the community together as one. Being an integral part of the Wilson County landscape is simply part of the bank’s culture, and a central theme in its operations. Hosting or participating in successful special events like the Wilson County Fair, car shows and family fun days are just some of the opportunities the bank uses to spend quality time with customers and neighbors creating partnerships and supporting local schools and organizations are other ways the bank emphasizes a sense of community. All these ‘ones’ add up to another: Wilson Bank & Trust is the one bank for all of your financial needs.

Tips for how you can easily save more money each month
I
f one were to conduct a quick poll of people across the country about the one thing they’d like more of, chances are the majority of respondents would reply “money.” More than time or days off from work, most people seem to want and even need more money, especially as the country approaches a recession. So what is it about money that proves so elusive to so many people? More often than not, it’s not the money that’s elusive, but saving the money. Most people would admit they have trouble saving money, which can create the illusion that they don’t make enough. For most people, not making enough isn’t the problem; it’s not saving enough. This sets a bad precedent, especially for those with an eye on retirement. In a 2007 analysis of surveys conducted into defined contribution plans such as 401(k) retirement programs, Watson Wyatt Worldwide found that, among lower pay employees ages 50 to 64, 66 percent have lower than one year’s pay in their accounts. Barring a miracle, that makes the idea of a comfortable retirement almost impossible. While saving money can seem like pushing a boulder up a steep hill, it’s not as hard as it sounds. For those looking to save more, consider the following tips. · Enroll in a retirement savings program: This is perhaps the ideal way to save money, as programs such as a 401(k) remove the money from a paycheck before taxes. Essentially, that money is being saved before an individual can even see it, acting almost as forced savings. In addition, employers may match 401(k) contributions up to a certain level, meaning you’re saving even more money. Those who do enroll in a 401(k) program should not look at it as an emergency fund, as there
are tax penalties for removing the money early. · Use public transportation whenever possible: Most people have seen their automobile expenditures skyrocket over the last several years thanks to the ever-rising cost of fuel. Also, people with low balances in their savings accounts often cannot put a large down payment down on a new vehicle if they need one. Therefore they have higher monthly bills and are typically only approved for vehicle loans after agreeing to higher interest rates. Essentially, it’s a domino effect that can all be avoided if reliable public transportation is offered. You can still keep your vehicle, but using public transportation to get to and from work will result in less money spent on gas, less mileage on the car (increasing its life expectancy and decreasing repair expenses), and will likely lower your insurance rates if you inform your provider the car is not used to commute to work. · Cook and prepare your own meals: Many people waste a good deal of money on a daily basis by eating meals outside of their home. Cooking or preparing your own meals is a consistent way to save significant amounts of money each month. Instead of buying a muffin or bagel each morning for breakfast, buy such items in bulk at the grocery store each week, and prepare your own lunch as well. Coffee drinkers can also save substantial amounts of money by brewing their own coffee at home and taking it to work in a travel mug. It might seem like a small adjustment to make, and it is. But it will save you substantial amounts of money each month. · Drink lots of water: While it might seem odd to suggest drinking lots of water as a means to save money, it actually makes more sense than it might seem. A notable symptom of dehydration
is hunger, so people who do not drink enough water often feel hungry when they’re likely just dehydrated. By drinking the recommended amount of water, you’re avoiding spending money on those mid-afternoon snacks, the price of which adds up by the end of a typical week. Medical professionals recommend drinking
eight to 10 glasses of water per day, or about 80 ounces. · Avoid hidden fees and pay bills on time: Creditors and lenders make money hand over fist each month thanks to late payments or hidden fees. If your accounts have minimum balance requirements, know what the minimum is and make sure you
have enough in the account to avoid the charges. Also, use only ATMs from your actual bank. Bills also must be paid on time. Late charges, particularly on credit cards, are often exorbitant and are always wasteful. Know when all bills are due and be sure to pay them on time.

HotSprings Spas celebrates anniversary by giving back to troops
Y
ou could say that HotSpring Spas Co-owner Kevin Croteau has been in hot water, and not the bubbling kind you’ll find in his hot tubs. Before he joined Coowner Dennis Croteau in 2007, Kevin served almost 30 years: over 24 years US Army active duty (10 years overseas duty) and over five years in the US Army Reserves. He served in Operation Just Cause with the 4th Battalion 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment AIR, 82nd Airborne Division. Dennis also spent four years on active duty and four years in the Army Reserves, serving in Georgia and Panama. Kevin said they spent their time serving their country, and now they’re serving Middle Tennessee and Wilson County. “When people wonder, ‘Why do I want to go buy a hot tub from HotSprings Spas of Music City’, I want them to know we
live by the code of ‘Honor, Duty and Country,’” Kevin said. “That, and trust. They need to know that not only will they get a great product but service after the sale as well.” It’s that service that has kept customers coming back and new ones in the door for five years now, and the owners are celebrating by giving to the military service they know so well: during their anniversary sale week of September 8 – 13, Kevin and Dennis will donate a $100 phone card for each spa sold. The phone cards will be sent overseas to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. The Croteaus are also collecting phone
card donations from the public at large and will send them overseas to the troops.
Signature Place, just off Lebanon Road, in Lebanon. The store will also host a Chamber of Commerce
Kevin said people wanting to donate phone cards may drop them off at any time at HotSpring Spas, located at 101
after hours event on September 11 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., when they will also be collecting phone card donations.
In addition to serving in the military, Dennis Croteau has years of experience in the hot tub business. He has been in the industry since 1992, and out of the over 700 Hot Spring Spas Independent Dealers, Dennis is one of the few who can disassemble and reassemble a HotSpring Hot Tub. HotSpring Spas of Music City carries HotSpring, Tiger River, Limelight Series Hot Tub, HotSpot and Solana Spas and Accessories; Helo Saunas and Steam Showers; and Spa Guard Water Care Products. The store is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and closed on Sunday. For more information about how HotSpring Spas can serve you, or how you can serve the military by donating phone cards for the troops, call Kevin or Dennis Croteau at 443-4441, or visit them online at www. hssofmusiccity.com.

Come home to Rutland Place...
I
f you want to know about retirement communities, you should consult an expert. Robert Baker is an expert. He’s a Nashville native who lived in two other Nashville retirement communities for 14 years before moving to Rutland Place in July. At the others, one in the Green Hills area, he also worked as a leasing agent for their apartments or drove the community vehicle. But those communities had nothing over Mt. Juliet’s newly-opened Rutland Place, according to Baker: “It’s the most beautiful of the three. The furnishings are absolutely gorgeous. And it is by far the most delicious food.” Robert Baker’s opinions are shared by many. Even at first glance, it’s obvious that Rutland Place, Mt. Juliet’s new 55 plus independent-living community, owned by the First Baptist Church and located on NW Rutland Road a block behind Mt. Juliet Christian Academy, is all about quality. From the elegant décor of its colonnaded-entry living rooms with overstuffed sofas to its spacious dining room (able to seat
140) with high-back comfortable upholstered chairs, Rutland Place is undeniably beautiful. More importantly for area seniors, who are quickly discovering it, it is a place custom designed for their lifestyle with a focus on choice and independence. Leah Smith, Director of Rutland Place, explains that the impressive new 3-story, 4-wing building just opened its doors to residents the end of July. She says that the property with its 112 apartments and multiple amenities “is like a cruise ship--but on land. It’s a fun and vibrant place with lots of activities.” She also points out that it is definitely not assisted living but more “the season between individual home ownership and assisted living.” While many senior communities are purchase-only and have a significant buy-in fee, Rutland Place is different; it is strictly rental with affordable monthly fees that include all utilities (except phone), housekeeping, 24-hour staff on site, an emergency call system and
meal prepared by professional chef Chris Scott, a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Culinary Arts in Charleston, SC. Scott was previously an instructor with the Culinary Arts Institute, a chef for RSVP Management Company, a Lebanon-based catering company, as well as Executive Chef for Castle Heights Chop House in Lebanon. Rutland Place also offers catering
to the community on the property. To learn more about reserving a room and planning a menu for your next event contact Chef Chris at 773-6111. The dining room at Rutland Place will begin serving a wonderful Sunday buffet to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday starting August 24, at a cost of $12 for adults and $6 for children 2-10. The Time of Your Life According to Ann Shapiro, Business Manager for Rutland Place, while all residents must be 55 or better, not all residents are necessarily retired. She cites examples of working people in that age group who travel frequently for work or pleasure but appreciate the time and energy-saving conveniences the community offers—no worries about maintenance, grocery shopping, or cooking when they return. The amenities of the Rutland Place lifestyle make it perfect for them. Rutland Place residents enjoy the privacy of their own home within a supportive, friendly community. They don’t have to worry about cleaning a house, cutting grass, or remembering to pay ever-escalating utility bills. Each resident’s home features a
kitchen with refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, window blinds, emergency call system, and individual climate control. Studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments are available. Residents of Rutland Place can enjoy a full and exciting Event Calendar that offers social, cultural, and recreational activities, including local arts and music and community-sponsored trips. But there is plenty to do without leaving the building. Rutland Place provides a movie theater with tiered seating (and a popcorn machine), a fully-equipped exercise room, a coffee bar, an internet café with computers, game and craft rooms, a beauty/barber salon, and a library. A large activity room accommodates group meetings and is equipped with a Wii game system so that residents can play with friends and grandchildren. The community van provides residents scheduled transportation service for appointments, shopping, and other errands. And there is plenty of parking for residents who choose to keep vehicles in the community. To find out more about Rutland Place: call 773-6111 and Pam Barton for a personal tour of the community.
