Please join us following worship for fellowship in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” ~Psalm 23:5-6 (ESV) ‘They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever come to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.” ’ ~John 6:34-36 (ESV)

†CALL TO WORSHIP Pastor:

People: Pastor: People: Pastor: People:

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” We will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. Come, then, for all is ready. I am not worthy that you should come under my roof; but speak one word only, Lord, and I shall be healed. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. I shall receive the bread of heaven. I shall drink the cup of salvation. †Please stand for these parts of the service.

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God: from the ends of the earth you have gathered us around Christ’s holy table. Forgive our separate ways. Forgive everything that keeps us apart; the prides that prevent our proper reunion. O God, have mercy on your church, troubled and divided. Renew in us true unity of purpose; that we may break bread together, and, with one voice, praise Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OFFERING ANTHEM

Look at the World

Chancel and Junior Choirs

Look at the world, everything all around us: Look at the world, and marvel every day. Look at the world: so many joys and wonders, So many miracles along our way. Praise to thee, O Lord, for all creation, Give us thankful hearts that we may see: All the gifts we share, and every blessing, All things come of thee. Look at the earth bringing forth fruit and flower; Look at the sky, the sunshine and the rain; Look at the hills, look at the trees and mountains, Valley and flowing river, field and plain: [refrain] Think of the spring, think of the warmth of summer Bringing the harvest before the winter’s cold. Everything grows, everything has a season, Till it is gathered to the Father’s fold: [refrain] Every good gift, all that we need and cherish Comes from the Lord in token of his love; We are his hands, stewards of all his bounty; His is the earth, and his the heavens above: [refrain]

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. †GLORIA PATRI 579 (blue)

MUSIC NOTES: The music for today’s

Worldwide Communion Sunday comes from seven different countries, all listed throughout the bulletin. Camille Saint-Saëns is essentially known to the musical world as both a symphony and an opera composer. His remarkable works for organ were recently discovered and now appear in many worship services and concert programs. Today’s prelude is an elaboration on a Eucharistic hymn by Thomas Aquinas (12251274). Originally, this prelude was composed by Saint-Saëns as part of his Mass, Op. 4 (1856), for soprano and organ. He later arranged it for organ solo. English composer John Rutter is one of the world’s leading composers of choral music. His anthem Look at the World was composed for the 70th anniversary of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England in 1996. Our Junior Choir joins the Chancel Choir in the singing of this delightful anthem. The postlude is an improvisation by Paul Manz on today’s closing hymn. The festival trumpets herald the tune while the accompaniment joyfully dances throughout the entire postlude. HEARING AIDS AND LARGE PRINT HYMNALS

are available from the ushers.

when the mission trip will be led by Brown Pearson to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For more information, please call Jordan Ball at 484-6011. GLOBAL MISSIONS AWARENESS WEEKEND!

An Affirmation of Mission adopted by the officers in February 1999 states the reason for Grace Covenant’s existence. One of them is to love our neighbors as ourselves. We do this by helping people in need and by supporting missionaries in their efforts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In John 3:16, Jesus says to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Why should we have concern for our neighbors? The answer, of course, is because God so loved the world that he allowed his Son to be sacrificed for us, all of us. The committee invites you to attend a Global Missions

Awareness Weekend from Saturday, October 24 through Sunday, October 25. Informative and exciting speakers will help us understand what this means for us at Grace Covenant. It is hoped that at the end of this weekend all of us will have a new knowledge and understanding of the importance of participating in mission efforts. The Evangelism and Missions committee will host a luncheon after the Worship Service on October 25. The committee asks that members, whose last name begins with A-R, bring a salad, and all other members bring a dessert. We hope you will join us for this time of fellowship and good food. Please sign up in the Narthex. PRISON MINISTRY: Please gather your

Christmas cards to be donated to Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. A collection box is located in the Presbyterian Women’s closet, which is in the Social Room. We will deliver the cards to the center the first week of December. Thank you, in advance, for your caring and generous help! HONDURAS 2010: The next mission trip to

Honduras is scheduled for January 10-16, 2010. Those who may be interested in participating in the 2010 mission trip may check out our website, www.KHISH.org (That’s Kurtz Humanitarian Initiative for Southern Honduras, named for the founder of this effort, which began in 2005). Susan Pillsbury David ([email protected]) or Cherry Corley ([email protected]) can answer your questions about how you many find your place on our team.

FOOD NEEDED FOR WILLIAM BYRD COMMUNITY HOUSE: Food donations may

be left in the basket in the Glass Office (the office on the main floor of the Education Building, near the rear doors). Please consider giving.
