Gautama was born in present day Nepal in the year 580 BC He was born into a royal family and had a privileged life, he never witnessed suffering until after he was married and had a child, it was then that he left the royal enclosure where he lived and the suffering he saw greatly disturbed him He left his royal life and went to live as a homeless holy man who traveled the world Gautama attempted to live a life of extreme self denial and discipline in an attempt to avoid pain, old age and death, he also began meditating He was not satisfied by his strict lifestyle so decided to pursue a life of neither luxury nor poverty, called the Middle Way It was through this lifestyle and his practice of meditation that he was able to achieve enlightenment or understanding, awareness, and clarity

Prayer flags are said to bring happiness, long life and prosperity to the flag planter and those in the vicinity.
