First written in 1972, it was updated in a 2003 edition that's every bit as relevant now - thus this review focusing on Hudson's new preface, introduction, and detailed account of the book's theme. He revisited it in his 2008-09 Project Censored award- winning article titled: "Economic Meltdown - The 'Dollar Glut' is What Finances America's Global Military Build-up" in which he explains the following - the "inter-related dynamics" of: -- "surplus (US) dollars pouring into the rest of the world for yet further financial speculation and corporate takeovers;" -- global central banks "recyl(ing) these dollar inflows (into) US Treasury bonds to finance the federal US budget deficit; and most important (but most suppressed in the US media),"-- "the military character of the US payments deficit and the domestic federal budget deficit.".. continua / continued [55612] [ 01-jul-2009 22:03 ECT ]

The occupation is immoral and unjust. It does not make the American people any safer. It has the opposite effect." Ten days later, he refused to obey a direct order from his company commander to prepare to deploy and was issued a second counseling statement. On that one he wrote, "I will not obey any orders I deem to be immoral or illegal." Shortly thereafter, he told a reporter, "I'm not willing to participate in this occupation, knowing it is completely wrong. Yesterday, the Israeli Navy boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, SPIRIT OF HUMANITY and kidnapped the 21 human rights activists, humanitarian workers and activists on their way to Gaza. As of today, none of them have had the right to see an attorney even though they came to the detention center to see them. The Free Gaza Movement is calling for their release and the release of our boat, seized in international waters off the coast of Gaza as our SPOT locator clearly shows. But more importantly, twenty-one internationals can get headlines. What about the 11,000 Palestinians who languish in jail, many of them tortured. We will update you on the status of our kidnapped passengers and our impounded boat, but who will do the same for the Palestinians and their boats?... continua / continued [55608] [ 01-jul-2009 15:32 ECT ]

Franklin Lamb Israeli jounalist Amnon Kapeliouk was my kind of Journalist and my kind of Jew. Sadly, he died the other day and was buried near his birth place in West Jerusalem. For more than 40 years Kapeliouk reported on Palestinian and Arab affairs for half a dozen newspapers and was an old school Robert Fisk- Janet Stevens’s type journalist for whom reporting meant getting to the scene fast and carefully scribing with pencil and note pad. I knew Kapeliouk mainly through his writings and a dozen or so path crossings over the years following our first improbable encounter during the infamous Beirut summer 1982. Those months of US-armed Israeli carnage, which continue to shape the region, left him with an indelible scar. He once told me: "I can’t forget. It doesn’t fade. I don’t think it ever will." I understood what he meant. In his last communication he said he would try to attend the 27th Anniversary Memorial to the victims of the Sabra-Shatila Massacre set for this coming September 16-18 at Beirut’s Shatila Camp... continua / continued [55606] [ 01-jul-2009 15:19 ECT ] Font size Carattere 123

THE PIRATES OF ZION: OBAMA MISSES THE BOAT! By Alan Sabrosky* Israel’s boarding and capture in international waters of The Spirit of Humanity, an unarmed boat carrying relief supplies to the suffering people of Gaza, shows that state-sponsored piracy is a real peril today. It is just one more breach of international law added to the global "rap sheet" of a rogue state that, as Netanyahu remarked a few weeks ago, is not like other countries. But Israel’s capture of this boat was also Netanyahu’s test of Obama’s resolve – a test Obama failed, to his shame and discredit... continua / continued [55602] [ 01-jul-2009 14:38 ECT ]

Zionist narratives of Palestinian land Marcy Newman, body on the line

Navigating Palestine can be a difficult task given that the land has been so judaized so that villages are covered up with forests and colonies and the names altered so as to cover up the crimes committed by Zionists over the years. One of the people who has eased this process is Salman Abu Sitta whose book the return journey: a guide to the depopulated and present Palestinian towns and villages and holy sites is an indispensable tool. This book, which has all the necessary place names in Hebrew, Arabic, and English maps Palestinian villages onto a Zionist colonist map to aid people in finding the remnants of Palestinian villages as well as navigating Zionist roads.... continua / continued [55600] [ 01-jul-2009 14:06 ECT ]

Obama’s Quiet War Jeremy Scahill In a new interview, Obama said he has "no intention" of sending US troops into Pakistan. It was the first documented attack ordered by the new US Commander in Chief inside of Pakistan. Since that first Obama-authorized attack, the US has regularly bombed Pakistan, killing scores of civilians. The New York Times reported that the attacks were clear evidence Obama "is continuing, and in some cases extending, Bush administration policy." In the first 99 days of 2009, more than 150 people were reportedly killed in these drone attacks. The most recent documented attack was reportedly last Thursday in Waziristan. UN rights mission hears of Gaza children's suffering By Sakher Abu El Oun, AFP

A UN human rights mission listened to testimony about the suffering of children in the Gaza Strip on Monday before wrapping up two days of public hearings into alleged Israeli war crimes. Around 20 percent of children in Gaza suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome brought on by witnessing violent acts, child psychologist Dr Iyad Sarraj told the panel. "The amount of killing and blood that they have seen or that their relatives have suffered from... it's a huge amount, and this leads to negative psychological feelings, to radicalism and a cycle of violence," he said. More than half of Gaza's population of 1.5 million is under 18 years of age... continua / continued [55567] [ 30-jun-2009 01:53 ECT ]

Mohammed El-Gharani, Guantánamo’s youngest prisoner, speaks to al-Jazeera Andy Worthington Speaking for the first time since his release from Guantánamo after seven years’ imprisonment without charge or trial, following a successful habeas corpus appeal in January, Mohammed El-Gharani, now a free man in Chad, told Mohamed Vall of al-Jazeera, in an exclusive interview, how he felt about being imprisoned from the age of 14 to the age of 21. "Seven of the most beautiful years of youth were lost in prison," he said. "I couldn’t learn or work. Seven years were just lost — for nothing." Recounting the torture he experienced, which I reported last April in my article, "Guantánamo’s forgotten child: the sad story of Mohammed ElGharani," Mohammed also revealed, for the first time, that the interrogators in Guantánamo tried to force him to spy on his fellow prisoners... continua / continued [55566] [ 30-jun-2009 01:15 ECT ]

EGYPT: Police shut down Iran solidarity march Amro Hassan An attempt by Egyptians to march in solidarity with Iranian protesters and to honor Neda-Agha Soltan -whose death earlier this month made her the icon of Iran's opposition movement -- was halted by security forces in Cairo over the weekend. The Cairo rally was called by democracy activist and opposition leader Ayman Nour and was scheduled to be held in Talaat Harb square in the Egyptian capital's downtown. But dozens of security vehicles surrounded Nour and his fellow protesters upon their arrival at the square. Police arrested four protesters belonging to Nour's party and prevented reporters from covering the event. "It is very ironic how Egyptian authorities, who earlier expressed their dismay against the Iranian regime's oppressive means of handling protesters, are now banning us from a march that shares the same perspective," Nour said at a news conference at his party's headquarters... continua / continued [55565] [ 30-jun-2009 00:44 ECT ]

A Few Thoughts on the Coup in Honduras Jeremy Scahill

There is a lot of great analysis circulating on the military coup against Manuel Zelaya in Honduras. I do not see a need to re-invent the wheel. (See here here here and here). However, a few key things jump out at me. First, we know that the coup was led by Gen. Romeo Vasquez, a graduate of the US Army School of the Americas. As we know very well from history, these "graduates" maintain ties to the US military as they climb the military career ladders in their respective countries. That is a major reason why the US trains these individuals. Secondly, the US has a fairly significant military presence in Honduras. Joint Task Force-Bravo is located at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras... continua / continued [55564] [ 30-jun-2009 00:40 ECT ]

Iran and Leftist Confusion Reese Erlich When I returned from covering the Iranian elections recently, I was surprised to find my email box filled with progressive authors, academics and bloggers bending themselves into knots about the current crisis in Iran. They cite the long history of U.S. interference in Iran and conclude that the current unrest there must be sponsored or manipulated by the Empire. That comes as quite a shock to those risking their lives daily on the streets of major Iranian cities fighting for political, social and economic justice. Some of these authors have even cited my book, The Iran Agenda, as a source to prove U.S. meddling. Whoa there, pardner. Now we're getting personal... continua / continued [55563] [ 30-jun-2009 00:30 ECT ]

June 29, 2009 Lies & Illusions: UPDATE on The Iraqi Charade. Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues This is a detailed update on the Iraqi charade or you may also call it - HOW THE PROPAGANDA DISCOURSE IS CONSTRUCTED. In that other post I argued the following : - the puppet government will market 30th of June day of "withdrawal" of American troops as a victory day for national sovereignty. When there is NO Sovereignty in Iraq. - I also said the Al-Qaeda/insurgents argument will pop up over and over again - And I asked the reader to pay notice to the usage of words in this propaganda set up. I now want to illustrate my points in bold red ink and/or in capital letters by cutting and pasting extracts from an article that just appeared and that will confirm the points I tried making... continua / continued [55560] [ 29-jun-2009 19:26 ECT ]

The International Red Cross reported Monday that six months after Israel's offensive in Gaza, 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are still living in poverty, despair and are unable to rebuild their lives and structures. The Red Cross added that the strict Israeli siege and restrictions on the Gaza Strip are blocking the international efforts to rebuild the Gaza Strip although 4.5 million US dollars are allocated for reconstruction efforts. It also stated that the Gaza Strip lacks basic medications, its basic infrastructure is ruined, and that the water supplies are irregular, while sanitation is collapsing... continua / continued [55559] [ 29-jun-2009 16:57 ECT ]

Following in Bush’s footsteps Obama administration preparing order for indefinite detentions By Tom Eley The Obama administration is drafting an executive order that would give the US president the power to arrest without charge, and imprison indefinitely without trial, foreign nationals it accuses of being terrorists, according to several senior government officials who spoke with the Washington Post and a reporter for nonprofit news source ProPublica on condition of anonymity. The order, should it be released, would likely reuse arguments made by the previous administration of George W. Bush that the laws of war allow the executive branch to disregard the established judicial system and domestic laws and rights, such as those guaranteed in the Bill of Rights... continua / continued [55558] [ 29-jun-2009 16:52 ECT ]

East Africa: Is Obama Following in the Disliked Footsteps of Bush in East Africa? Africom to Continue Under Obama

With the Obama administration set to oversee significant increases in US security assistance programmes for African countries, Daniel Volman examines the US government's plans for its military operations on the African continent over the coming financial year. Stressing that the US president is essentially continuing the policies outlined under his predecessor George W. Bush, the author considers the proposed funding increases for initiatives like the Foreign Military Financing programme and the International Military Education and Training (IMET) programme. Pointing out that the administration is yet to offer any public explanation of its policy, Volman concludes that it would be a mistake to assume that there will be no US military action if the situation in Somalia deteriorates.... continua / continued [55554] [ 29-jun-2009 16:20 ECT ]

The scramble for Iraq's 'sweet oil' By Nicole Johnston, Al Jazeera correspondent With proven oil reserves of around 112 billion barrels and up to another 150 billion barrels of probable reserves, Iraq is the greatest untapped prize for international oil companies. To put that in context, if Iraq does turn out to have around 300 billion barrels of oil, it will rival the world's biggest producer Saudi Arabia - which has around 160 billion barrels of proven reserves. So it is little wonder that giant international oil companies are lining up to get back into Iraq after the industry was nationalised in the 1970s and the oil majors were kicked out. On June 30 major companies - including Exxon, Shell, BP and Total - will gather at Iraq's oil ministry in Baghdad for a two-day meeting to take part in the first bidding round for oil service contracts... continua / continued [55553] [ 29-jun-2009 16:00 ECT ]

Selling Iran: Ahmadinejad, Privatization and a Bus Driver Who Said No by Billy Wharton A creeping assumption lies just beneath the surface of arguments concerning the disputed election in Iran. Incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is cast as an anti-US populist crusader resisting the materialistic advances of the West. His opponent, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, as his foil — a Western-backed liberal intent on implementing free-market policies. Violent street battles have been presented as a re-enforcement of the Western disposition to see the two idealized positions as the limit of what is politically imaginable. Such arguments conveniently avoid a third force — the people of Iran, whose street politics threaten to move well beyond the confines of the electoral campaigns. Questions remain. Is Ahmadinejad really a populist — the only force preventing a wave of pro-market policies in Iran? Does Mousavi’s campaign mark the limits of the reform movement? Since his election in 2005, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, under the guidance of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, has overseen a regime dedicated to the privatization of state-controlled industries... continua / continued [55552] [ 29-jun-2009 15:37 ECT ]

CIA Crucified Captive In Abu Ghraib Prison By Sherwood Ross

The Central Intelligence Agency crucified a prisoner in Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, according to a report published in The New Yorker magazine. "A forensic examiner found that he (the prisoner) had essentially been crucified; he died from asphyxiation after having been hung by his arms, in a hood, and suffering broken ribs," the magazine’s Jane Mayer writes in the magazine’s June 22nd issue. "Military pathologists classified the case a homicide." The date of the murder was not given. "No criminal charges have ever been brought against any C.I.A. officer involved in the torture program, despite the fact that at least three prisoners interrogated by agency personnel died as a result of mistreatment," Mayer notes... continua / continued [55547] [ 29-jun-2009 14:42 ECT ]
