It is a competitive neighborhood school set in the Flatlands/Canarsie section of Brooklyn. Of its 32 classes, three are self-contained Special Education. There is a small ELL population. All classes are heterogeneously grouped with a gifted class on each grade and a full time inclusion class in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Literacy P.S. 251 teaches balance literacy through the workshop model, Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop and is a Collaborative Community of Practice partner school. Mathematics Everyday Mathematics is the math program for grades K-5. Additional initiatives are offered such as The Hundredth Day of school, number facts contests and mathematical related literacy and interactive software. Manipulatives are a key feature in math lessons. The goal is to meet and surpass the new city standards and to extend math proficiency on all New York State tests. Science SCIS and FOSS kits are used in each classroom and great attention is given to hands-on scientific investigation. Social Studies Teachers use Social Studies texts during reading and writing workshop to ensure that State Social Studies standards are covered. Fifth grade teachers prepare their students for the State Social Studies exam using DBQ’s and content area texts.
