REVIEW OF UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Bipasha Debnath 26 CHAPTERS WRITTEN BY HARRITE BICHER STOW PUBLISHED IN 1962 FROM HARVERED UNIVERSITY PRESS
In 15th century a human being was treated as a living property due to his or her skin color. This book story is about that time's society. After the invention of Africa black people were treated as living property by the people of Europe & America. The trade of slavery was started from that time. The black were the fellow who were not trusted but tortured a lot by their masters. They were sold by their master when the master was in some problem or in some difficulties. They were always handed over from here to there. They even had no right to know where they were going or sending. They usually had no family. If they had, those also depend on the master's choice. They had no right to invent something. It was their providence to having a good master. Master got a lot of money by selling his most active & hard working experienced fellow. Tom, George, Eliza, Chloe, Emmeline, Cassy were the representatives of that time. At the beginning of the book tom worked for a long time under a good master, Mr. Shelby. He was trusted not only by his master but also loved by his young master, Shelby's son. Due to some financial problem Mr. Shelby was bound to sell tom &Eliza's kid to a slave trader. As a trusted, honest & steady fellow tom was went with the trader Haley. But Eliza fled away with her kid. Her husband George was technically literate fellow but tortured by his cruel master. After some time to his wife & kid's flying, he
also fled with the help of his friends. The personal appearance of Eliza, the character ascribed to her, are sketches drawn from life. At the time of ran away, the incident of the mother's crossing the Ohio River on the ice is a well-known fact. After facing a lot of trouble, they met each other & run away Canada.
In a voyage with the trader, tom saw the business of selling & buying living property. At the end of the voyage he again sold to a kind master Mr. Augustine St. Clare on the request of his beautiful little daughter Evangeline. He recited the quotes from bible for Eva & did other works also. The tragically fate of Tom didn't favored his fortune lastly after the death of Eva &Mr. Clare. He was again sold to a cruel land lord, Laggrey. The public and shameless sale of beautiful mulatto and quadroon girls has acquired notoriety; from the incidents following the capture of the Pearl was seen by tom during his 2nd journey. Emmeline and Cassy was the victim of this. In the point of the book author it was an injustice to the lady. But that time it was not only correct but also legal work. After handed over the living property for 3rd time, tom reached in a place where breathing was impossible & a mother Cassy was waiting for her daughter Eliza's news. At that place, pious tom got no time to read the bible &when he started to read his master didn't allow him. But the pious tom never lost his faith to god. We can but view it with shame and regret. The masters like Laggrey think that literacy was the obstacle behind obligation.
At the end of the story tom died in a far away from his family though his young master George came to get him back. The brutality of laggrey killed tom but didn't able to through his ethical view & faith to god. The conclusion of the whole matter is, abolitionism is little else at last, but hypocritical self-righteous Pharisees, and Mrs. Stowe wrote her book to flatter their pride, indulge their whims, tickle their fancies, and pick their pockets. I have remarked that this is a Marvelous world, and among the many wondrous things that fall under our observation, there is nothing more remarkable than Yankee ingenuity! The Southern people, it is true, receive the proceeds of the labor of the slaves, but then, they must first expend money in raising them; feed and clothe them in health, nurse them in sickness, and provide for them in old age. And lastly a question to all of you, west has thrown slaveries many years ago, but would you tell me when we are going to throw it? Thank you
