Book 10, page i

Quick Start Guide Read the book WITH your child. You read the “regular” text, and he/she reads the big, red words, sort of like reading the different parts in a play.

Help your child sound out the words as needed.

c-a-t cat

Read the book several times. This helps develop the eye muscles and left-to-right reading patterns that are necessary for reading. Don’t rush it. Body builders don’t train in a day, neither does a child.

If your child is having difficulty, he/she might need more practice with the alphabet. Get a fun book about the alphabet and read that lots of times. Then come back to Progressive Phonics.

And most important of all, HAVE FUN! Book 10, page ii

A note about Book 10: It is very important not to “rush” ahead – for example, if a child is still struggling to recognize the difference between a “d” and a “b,” or if a child is still having trouble with “blended” consonants, then the child is not ready for this book. Be patient and work with your child, reading and re-reading the earlier Progressive Phonics books. Some children have the ability to learn to read quickly; some children are talented in other ways, and need lots and LOTS of practice with reading. Most important of all, MAKE IT FUN. If reading becomes too much of a chore, this could damage your child’s education potential. Reading is the KEY to all education.
