The team at Camacho Auto Sales would like to thank the Fallon community for voting us “The Best of Fallon” in Auto Sales and Service.

All too often it seems that the bar has been lowered rather than raised when it comes to customer service. At Camacho Auto Sales, we strive to make excellent customer service the rule and not the exception. We fully understand that without satisfied customers, there is no business that can continue to grow and reach its full potential. Once again, thank you for your vote of confidence and support. We will continue to do all we can to fill all of your automotive needs. We are very aware that our #1 vital resource is you, “the customer.”

People, places and things make the Lahontan Valley a special place to live and visit For the people who call Churchill County home, the area offers a wide array of activities and businesses that make living here special. There are those who would argue that people are the ones who add that special touch to a dinner or to a floral arrangement or to a hair styling. People are a community’s greatest asset. The businesses and the people of this great county take pride in what they do. For that reason, you will see many winners in this year’s 2009 Best of Fallon. Every year we ask our readers what they like about our community and to recognize the people, places and things that make the Lahontan Valley special. After a month of voting both online and on paper ballots, the votes are in and our readers have spoken. In the pages that follow, the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard reveals the people, places and things that our residents consider the best the Lahontan Valley has to offer.

Fallon Auto Mall • Best Auto Dealership By STEVE RANSON LVN Editor With a reputation of excellence and a long-standing commitment to its neighbors, Fallon Auto Mall has been a mainstay in Fallon life for more than half a century. “We’re a family oriented business,” said Chris Henning, general manager. For that reason, Fallon Auto Mall is once again the area’s top auto dealership as voted by readers in the 2009 Best of Fallon. The Fallon Auto Mall first began as a small dealership 53 years ago on East Center Street on the same block as the present-day Towne Square. For the past 30 years, the dealership has been a familiar site at 1351 West Williams Ave. The dealership currently employs 35 people. Henning’s grandfather, Howard, wanted to establish an auto dealership that prided itself on customer service, a tradition that still holds true today. “That’s why we are so successful,” Chris Henning said. Howard still serves as president of the company, and his son Kurt is the dealer principal for Fallon Auto Mall. Chris Henning said Fallon Auto Mall stands out from its competitors for several reasons. “We have a no-pressure attitude. We don’t use heavy sell tactics,” Henning said. “We’re more like a county store.” Furthermore, Fallon Auto Mall takes care of its customers once they purchase a vehicle. “We certainly service what we sell,” Henning said. “We very rarely have people in the office with complaints.” Henning said the dealership carries Ford, Mercury and Toyota automobile and trucks. “We carry all makes and models and all brands,” he added. In addition to having many new automobiles and trucks, Fallon Auto Mall also sells pre-owned vehicles. “We have a million dollars in inventory, by far the biggest selection in town,” Henning said. In addition to becoming one of Northern Nevada’s most successful auto dealerships, Fallon Auto Mall has also reached out to the community as a strong supporter of youth activities. Recently, Fallon Auto Mall teamed with the Fallon Youth Club for a fundraiser. For every car Fallon Auto Mall sold, the Fallon Youth Club received $100.

Steve Ranson/LVN photo Fallon Auto Mall, which has prided itself on customer service and being a good neighbor, recently participated with the Fallon Youth Club for a fundraiser. 24 Years

Joe Rando has been wielding scissors and trimming hair on Maine Street for 29 years at Ideal Barber Shop — and LVN readers have voted him the best barber in town in the 2009 Best of Fallon. Ideal Barber Shop, located at 153 S. Maine St. and open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., also took top honors as the best barber shop in Fallon. Rando, along with his wife, Madeline, operate the classic barber shop, complete with a spinning barber shop pole outside, five days a week. He purchased the two-chair shop from Art Daniels who operated the shop for more than 20 years prior to Rando’s arrival. Although Rando grew up in Fernley, he took a circuitous route to arrive in Fallon almost three decades ago. He joined the U.S. Army in high school in 1968. He served one year in Vietnam and returned home in 1970. Rando found it difficult to land good jobs without a high education, so he attended Reno High School and graduated in 1974. While attending high school, Rando lived on his own and drove a truck to support himself. Following graduation, Rando attended barber school in Sacramento. He headed to Las Vegas and operated two barber shops for several years before being lured to the oil fields in New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Rando was contacted by Daniels who was looking to sell his shop on Maine Street. Rando, a third-generation barber, found it hard to resist the offer and found himself back in Northern Nevada in 1980. The single father enjoyed raising his son in Fallon and married Madeline several years later. Madeline joined Rando at the barber shop and now spends her days cutting hair beside her husband. He joked that he needs to spend more time with his wife. Rando used to sell motorcycle parts out of the barber shop, but he found it difficult to sell parts and cut hair simultaneously so he gave up the parts business. The couple did not, however, give up their love of motorcycles. They have ridden their Harley Davidsons to the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota 13 times. Rando said he enjoys his job security and doesn’t have to worry about being fired. He said 97 percent of his business is repeat customers, with the remainder coming from traveling “snowbirds” and some military personnel.

Nevada St.

The atmosphere at Lahontan Valley Veterinary Clinic is different than the average veterinary office. There are free dog treats on the counter and stables just outside. One of the veterinarians, David Faught, walks in. He isn’t in a white lab coat or nice slacks. He’s wearing jeans, a plaid shirt and baseball cap. It’s obvious why readers voted it 2009 Best of Fallon as the area’s top kennel and veterinarian. It has the same relaxed atmosphere for which Fallon is known, and it offers the veterinary services Fallon needs. “I think maybe why we got voted Best of Fallon is because we have a broad spectrum of clients,” Faught said. Faught said they have a wide variety of customers because the clinic is the only one in the area that sees both domestic and equine animals. The clinic even has facilities to perform large animal surgeries. “We work on everything,” Faught said. “The mix animal clinics are not as common as they used to be. We’re kind of a dying breed.” In addition to working on all types of animals, the clinic works extra hard to make sure the animals have all received the best possible care, said Jennifer Olsen, a receptionist. “The doctors work as a team,” Olsen said. “The doctors are very patient with the animals. They strongly care about each animal that comes through the door.” Not only do they provide everything Fallon needs, Faught said they also provide it at a reasonable price. “We’re honest. We charge a fair price,” Faught said. “There are people who price shop these days.” The final unique quality about the clinic comes from Fallon. “Four out of the five vets working here right now grew up here,” Faught said. “I think they understand the people — the community — the lifestyle.”

Mackedon Ready Mix Concrete is a simple business. The business mixes concrete and delivers it to the client or contractor. Nothing special, but something must be quite exceptional because Mackedon Concrete along with Hiskett & Sons has been voted Best of Fallon for its work in the concrete business. Owner Jim Mackedon and his employees were surprised to learn they tied for best because the job isn’t that spectacular. “We just provide ready mix concrete, just provide concrete for Lahontan Valley,” Mackedon said. Nevertheless, there is a lot more finesse to the little business located at at 1550 Auction Road than most realize. Employees work hard to provide quality service. They can get concrete on the road to be delivered within 10 minutes of receiving an order, said Shaun Benninghove, batch man. “Sometimes you get people that get in a jam — they need it right away,” Benninghove said. Mackedon Concrete is a small business, so it can offer a different kind of quality service. “It’s a small business so you’re not just a number,” Benninghove said. “We all know your family. It’s a very family oriented business.” The small business atmosphere means a lot of personal service for clients. Mackedon himself is involved in every area of the business, including deliveries and customer service. “Jim interacts with people real well,” Benninghove said. “It’s a small business; everybody has to deal with a little bit of everything.” Additionally, Benninghove said, everyone at Mackedon takes pride in quality customer service. “You got to have a driver there who can interact and can be friendly,” Benninghove said. “That’s probably the most import part of the job—your customer relations.” Although Mackedon was a little shocked about being recognized, readers have noticed the way he runs his business. “We’ve just been trying to do it the right way for a long time,” Mackedon said.

Best Place in Fallon for Eyewear 2009 Kim Lamb/LVN photo Big Ed’s Brick House Bar-B-Que features a variety of home cook side orders and Southern style BBQ.

By MICHAEL MARSH LVN Staff Writer A new restaurant in town was named by Lahontan Valley News readers as the top barbecue restaurant in the 2009 Best of Fallon contest. Big Ed’s Brick House Bar-B-Que, which opened in February 2008 by owner Ed Sanders, tries to attract customers with its homestyle cooking and friendly atmosphere. He said the homestyle cooking makes customers feel right at home. Sanders opened his restaurant at 610 W. Williams Ave., after retiring from the Fallon Naval Air Station. He said his cooking is southern style, and most of his food is derived from family recipes that were passed on. Sanders, who moved to Northern Nevada in 1996 from Oakland to work at the base, said he saw a need for a barbecue restaurant in Fallon. The restaurant is not Sander’s first venture into the foodservice industry. In California, he ran a few snack bars but said they do not compare to what his restaurant offers. “I stepped it up because I know how to cook these meals. I wanted to bring a new type of restaurant to the community,” he said, adding all the recipes are made from scratch. The restaurant owner said he knows how to use herbs and spices to bring out the flavor of food his business offers. He stressed that the restaurant is much more than a job to him. “This is my passion. This is what I like to do,” he said, adding what puts a smile to his face is seeing customers enjoy his food. He said his son, Shorty, plays an integral part in the business and also said Pee Wee plays a big role, too. Sanders said he thinks customers who try his food will return. “If you try it once, you will be back,” he said. “If you like barbecue this is the place to be. It’s the only place in town where you can get certain (food).” Big Ed’s, which now offers catering services, can be reached at (775) 867-2823. Friday, February 27, 2009

In high school, math may be one of the least desired subjects, but students at Churchill County High School have had that fear removed by teacher Karen Lawson, who has been voted as Lahontan Valley News’ top teacher in the 2009 Best of Fallon. Lawson grew up in Wyoming but moved to Fallon for her first teaching position in 1987. She is a wife and mother of two and a National Board Certified math teacher. In Fallon, Lawson flourished into a teacher, achieving many accomplishments and developing skilled students, many of whom have continued to pursue math-related careers. “I’ve had quite a few students go into engineer programs,” Lawson said. Some have even become math teachers themselves like Linnell Erquiaga, a first-year math teacher at CCHS. Erquiaga said Lawson is a remarkable teacher who can even make math fun. “It was high-level math. She always made it fun and easy to understand,” Erquiaga said. “She’s the queen of tricks. She’s got a trick for everything.” Lawson said she is dedicated and tries to figure out what students need to learn and to enjoy math. “I try to do some hands-on things and just a lot of practice in class,” Lawson said. “I just try to explain things in different ways.” Now working with her former teacher, Erquiaga has found that Lawson is quite a mentor as well. “It’s nice because she has so many different ideas and she’s so helpful,” Erquiaga said. “It’s made us all better teachers.” Lawson said that parents know that students who enter her class are going to learn some math. “They’re going to have to work hard. They’re expected to work most of the time,” Lawson said. “I’m helpful. I try to be receptive to parents and kids if they have questions or concerns.”
