enhancements that improve performance, navigation precision and passenger comfort on the next-generation 737. *********************************** boeing team to design new spacecraft power generation system for darpa st. louis, july 31, 2008 -- a team led by boeing [nyse: ba] advanced systems has been awarded a defense advanced research projects agency (darpa) contract for the first phase of the fast access spacecraft testbed (fast) program. darpa's fast is a multiphase effort to design and develop a ground test prototype of a new high power generation subsystem (hpgs) for spacecraft. during phase 1, boeing will develop a complete plan for a demonstration system. team members include dr technologies, northrop grumman astro aerospace, texas a&m university, spectrolab inc. (a boeing subsidiary), and key suppliers. "boeing is honored to work with darpa in developing this revolutionary system that will enable highly mobile spacecraft and ultra-high-power payloads," said tom kessler, fast program manager for boeing advanced network and space systems. "boeing brings unique experience in high-power spacecraft and electric propulsion to this team as we help darpa advance this promising technology." the boeing hpgs is an innovative integration of solar-concentrator, powerconversion, and heat-rejection systems supported with an ultra-lightweight structure and deployment system for pointing toward and tracking the sun. when combined with electric thrusters, the boeing hpgs will produce a lightweight power and propulsion system capable of providing responsive spacecraft maneuverability for on-orbit servicing, space-based situational awareness, and high-power payloads such as communication and radar systems. boeing's experience includes more than 70 percent of the spacecraft ever flown with more than 15 kilowatts at beginning of life, and six operational high-power solar concentrator spacecraft, including 13 missions using 9 kilowatts for electric propulsion to help the spacecraft reach geosynchronous orbit. upon darpa approval, the boeing team will perform phase 2 work to include fabrication, assembly and testing of two hpgs test articles to validate performance characteristics in simulated space environments. an on-orbit demonstration of the system may be conducted following the ground test program. ********************************** boeing submits combat aircraft industrial-participation proposal to indian government new delhi, aug. 04, 2008 -- the boeing company [nyse: ba] today submitted a comprehensive industrial participation (ip) proposal to the government of india in support of the company's medium multi-role combat aircraft (mmrca) offer to the indian air force of 126 f/a-18e/f super hornets. the proposal was submitted in response to the mmrca request for proposals, which asked all competitors to provide an ip plan as part of their offering. boeing's proposal firmly supports the indian government's goal of a vibrant indigenous aerospace industry. it also foresees india playing a key role in enhancing boeing's global competitiveness and growth through a series of strategic partnerships with indian industries. "we are already establishing the groundwork that will lead us to success in this large undertaking through early engagement of indian industry, both public and private," said vivek lall, boeing integrated defense systems vice president and india country head. the alliances began forming in earnest in november 2006, when boeing hosted a conference in bangalore at which 25 of its key suppliers were introduced to more than 25 india-based aerospace and engineering services companies. "these have brought long-term economic and industrial benefits to our customers around the world, and created jobs and growth opportunities for boeing. and many of the companies that helped boeing meet those ip obligations have evolved to become enduring partners in the global boeing supply chain." earlier this year, boeing reached an agreement to form a joint venture with tata industries limited, part of the tata group, one of india's largest business conglomerates. in december 2007, boeing signed a memorandum of understanding (mou) with hindustan aeronautics limited, which is adopting boeing's lean and bestmanagement practices. boeing has also signed an mou with international engineering firm larsen & toubro for joint exploration of business opportunities in the indian defense market. *************************************** boeing airborne laser team begins testing laser with chemical fuel st. louis, july 28, 2008 -- the boeing company [nyse: ba], industry teammates and the u.s. missile defense agency have completed installing the high-energy laser aboard the airborne laser (abl) aircraft and have begun testing the laser with its chemical fuel at edwards air force base, calif. the tests involve flowing the laser's chemicals through the laser to confirm sequencing and control. once these tests are completed, the test team will fire the laser aboard the aircraft on the ground for the first time. "the airborne laser team has done a great job preparing the high-energy laser for these fuel tests, which will lead the way toward achieving 'first light' of the laser aboard the aircraft," said mike rinn, boeing vice president and abl program director. "once again, we made and demonstrated enormous progress toward ushering in a new age of directed-energy weapons." repeated laser firings aboard the aircraft will demonstrate lasing duration and power at levels suitable for the destruction of multiple classes of ballistic missiles. the laser will then be fired through the aircraft's beam control/fire control system, including the nose-mounted turret. this will be followed by functional check flights of the entire abl weapon system. the test campaign will start with the first airborne intercept of a ballistic missile in 2009. the abl aircraft consists of a modified boeing 747-400f whose back half holds the

high-energy laser, designed and built by northrop grumman. before being installed, the high-energy laser completed rigorous ground testing in a laboratory at edwards. the aircraft's front half contains the beam control/fire control system, developed by lockheed martin, and the battle management system, provided by boeing. boeing is the prime contractor for abl, which will provide speed-of-light capability to destroy all classes of ballistic missiles in their boost phase of flight. *******************************
