Employee Speak

Kitchen Tips

After having completed two successful years, I can say that HTC has something in store for everyone; one just needs to be patient, dedicated and disciplined. I am proud to be associated with HTC that believes its employees as assets and invests in developing their skills. Being in HTC is like being in a family. There is a sense of ownership here that is tremendously motivating us. The work is rewarding, the management vision is clear and the recognition is quick and fair. -Tamilarasan S, Projects It's been a delightful experience to be a part of the HTC family for the past two years. Within this family, I am fortunate to work with a splendid team. As the foundation of HTC are: "Truth, Simplicity and Humility", I cannot but see HTC growing from strength to strength bringing cheer and goodwill to each of its employees. At HTC, I can look back with pride and look forward with hope.” - Reena Pillai - Marketing "HTC family lifted me by giving hands in the way of SEP, where I learnt all under one roof. HTC has given me a very good opportunity to build my career in the IT field from the basics. It also taught me how to catch fishes rather than feed fishes daily. In HTC, I played varied roles from development to project management. HTC also gave me onsite opportunities. Every day the responsibility and confidence are increasing within me that I can do.” - Amal Peterson – Projects

Did you know? Peeling onions under water or chewing a gum while peeling onions will prevent tears from eyes. Adding a little raw salt will preserve chilli powder well. To preserve coconut for a longer time, smear the coconut with salt after breaking. Grated coconut could also be stored by mixing with salt. Hard-boiled eggs can be cut neatly by wetting the knife before cutting; fresh bread can be cut easily and finely by dipping the knife in hot water. Sprinkling a little salt in the frying pan will prevent the egg from sticking to the pan while frying. Cracked eggs can be boiled by wrapping them in aluminium foil. Fish smell can be removed from the kitchen by boiling half glass of vinegar and onefourth glass of water in a saucepan for about 10 minutes. Less oil will be consumed if the pan is rubbed with onion before frying fish or any thing else. Over-boiling of milk can be prevented by placing a marble or a small clean stone in the pan. Placing a slice of bread in the cake tin will keep cakes fresh for long.

What does fast track learning mean? It simply means you've got to build a plane even as you are flying it! Sounds crazy, doesn't it? Times are scary. You have to learn on the job how to do the job. Another way of describing this is: learning by burning your fingers! As our wise old uncle Aristotle said, "What we have to learn, we learn by doing."

There used to be a time when we finished school and entered the real world of work. That was when we had to stop learning to begin earning. Now learning and earning go hand in hand. Learning is the new form of productivity. In order to grow at work, you got to be a fast track learner.

ET CETERA - AN ITES EXCLUSIVE

The school of learning today has expanded to include Kindergarten to lifetime. The three inter-connected contexts of fast track learning are: 1. Uncertainty 2. Change 3. Complexity. Unfortunately, most of our schools teach the exact opposite things: 1. Certainty 2. Rigidity 3. Linearity. These schools are going to be just as relevant as teaching a raging bull to be well behaved in a China shop. We need to change what we learn and more importantly, how we learn. For example, learning in the body will become as important as learning through the head. Memory based learning will have to be supplemented more with hands on learning like the way a potter learns to make a clay pot. Learning at the level of emotions will also become important. That old wise habit will have to be re-visited: we have to learn by heart!

A married man had the fortune of visiting Japan for 3 weeks, where he was introduced to various Quality Concepts. What a perfect opportunity (he thought) to organize the kitchen along the lines of what he had learnt and tried to implement in the kitchen before his wife arrived.

Naga Asana (The Cobra Pose)

He had a good-sized kitchen. He started, by storing the pots and pans in the lower cabinet between the dishwasher and the range. It made for short movements when he retrieved pan and when putting it away when emptying the dishwasher. He then moved to the coffee and tea. He placed the coffee, tea, filters, French Press, espresso cups, sugar bowl, coffee mugs, and tin of cinnamon above the coffee maker. Everything we needed was in short reach of where we would use it. He felt so proud. He went on to organize the baking items all together. Sugar, flour, canned fruit, preserves, baking powder, baking soda, shortening, mixing bowls, and measuring spoons together on the shelf above where he thought his wife would do the baking. He was on a roll. He continued with this approach until everything was in its place. He had organized for high efficiency of access based on the task we (normally she) would perform. When his wife arrived and saw the kitchen gallery, she laughed instantly and started re-arranging his handiwork to get all the stuff organized in the way she was used to working.

Keep the hips on the floor. 4 Tilt the head as far back as possible and hold the posture for the duration of the inhaled breath. 5 Exhale and reverse the process to return to position #1. Do it three to four times. Benefits: Stretches the spine, strengthens the back and arms, opens the chest and heart.

If You Think…

-Narendranath Sai

If you think you are beaten, you are.

If you think you are outclassed, you are,

If you think you dare not, you don't!

You've got to think high to rise,

If you like to win, but think you can't, it's almost a cinch you won't.

You've got to be sure of yourself before

You think you'll lose, you're lost;

Life's battle doesn't always go

For out in the world we find

To the stronger and faster man,

Success begins with a fellow's will;

But sooner or later the man who wins

It's all in the state of mind.

Is the man who thinks, he can!!!

Tips for better memory : Some people are better at remembering things than their peers. Here are a few techniques to improve your memory. Memory is crucial to our daily lives. It is important to note that people from all age groups have memory problems and that some are better at remembering things than the others. Several factors contribute to the ability to remember. For instance, better concentration helps you learn things faster. Memory also depends on better understanding the more you try to understand things, the longer you will remember them. Loss of memory can be due to unnecessary use of vital energy. You may have observed that certain bad habits like swinging our legs and cracking our fingers lead to wastage of vital energy. Ways to Improve Memory Deep breathing, yoga or other relaxation techniques will improve your attention span and ability to recall. Practice of 'Tratak' (i.e. gazing at an object without blinking and then closing your eyes and visualizing the object in your mind) for some time daily, will improve concentration. You can also practice 'Gyan Mudra', by simply joining the tips of the index finger and the thumb. You can perform this mudra while walking, sitting or doing any other work. Try to practice this mudra as often as you can. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which energizes the mind and helps reduce stress. Stimulate your brain by reading, playing chess or doing crossword puzzles, etc. Being confident is the key to improve memory. Also, always focus on developing a positive attitude. Poor nutrition can also affect the memory. So, you need to take a well-balanced diet to keep your brain cells sharp. Organize your life, learn to get rid of stress and find the joy of relaxation in daily life itself.

Ingredients for a Healthy Living… They are not just ingredients of a recipe… they keep you fit… and help you lead a healthy life… Turmeric - blood purifier It is believed that turmeric is used for the coloring of food but the fact is that turmeric is a blood purifier and antiinflammatory. When added to high protein dishes, it stimulates complete digestion of proteins and prevents the creation of toxins. It is good for dispelling flatulence and inflammation. Turmeric is also considered as a healing to the liver. No substitute for coriander! Coriander has been in use in India since 5000 BC, both in the form of powder as well as seeds. Its leaves are also used very often as a cooling garnish in Indian dishes. Coriander alleviates gas and tonifies the digestive tract. Ginger - highly valued Ginger, either fresh or dry, is highly valued. It stimulates digestion and blood circulation. Dry ginger dispels gas when used with hot pepper. Fresh ginger is diuretic and alleviates

cold and cough, when taken in the juice form. In both forms, ginger stimulates appetite and calms indigestion. When taken with mild laxatives like fennel, ginger relieves constipation and gas gently, yet effectively. Black pepper - assistant to good health Black pepper is valuable for stimulating appetite and reducing gas. It is taken as corns or in a powdered form. Being rich in chromium, it prevents and alleviates adultonset diabetes and is a real assistant to good health and digestion for a majority of the people. It is generally used in small quantities. Fenugreek – a rejuvenator Fenugreek is generally used as seeds and is found mostly in Indian pickles. It is a good rejuvenator. This herb stimulates blood circulation and hair cell development and weight loss. It is also taken as a tonic medicine in Ayurveda for both men and women. It fosters digestion and alleviates chronic cough.

Travelogue

From Hospital to Hospital‘ity’… A breathtakingly beautiful and scenic drive meandering through the luxurious plantations of the Carolina Tea Estate took me to "The Tryst". Wondering what "The Tryst" is? As the name goes "Tryst" is a private, romantic rendezvous for lovers… lovers in the literal sense and of nature, peace and quietude. Nestled in the Nilgiris at a height of approximately 6000 feet and just 2.5 kms from Coonoor town, The Tryst, an exclusive homestay, is a confluence of the East and the West. My hosts were Dr M S Sathya Rao, a holistic medical practitioner from Liverpool, England and wife Ann, a pretty Yorkshire lady. This combination of Dr Rao and Ann speaks a lot for the confluence of the East and the West at The Tryst. And add to it, the romantic, elegant and nostalgic feeling that the environment of the home provided, left me with a sense of having lived my life to the brim. You may ask what is so special about this place for a holiday. Well, there is a lot you can rave about once you have visited the place.

Sacred Space Sense & Sensitivity When the senses contact sense objects, a person experiences cold or heat, pleasure or pain. These experiences are fleeting, they come and go. Bear them patiently, Arjuna. Those who are not affected by these changes, who are the same in pleasure and pain, are truly wise and fit for immorality. – Bhagavad-Gita TheSelf-existent lord pierced the senses to turn outward. Thus we see to the world outside and see not the self within us. The Tempter masters the lazy and irresolute man who dwells on the attractive side of things, ungoverned in his senses and unrestrained in his food, like the wind overcomes a rollen tree. But the tempter cannot master a man who dwells on the distasteful side of things, self-controlled in his senses, moderate in eating, resolute and full of faith, like the wind cannot move the mountain crag – Gautama Buddh. Travelogue

- S. Gigy, Recruitment

It is a process of identification and elimination of non value adding (waste) activities. How to implement Kaizen? 1. Decide upon a section of the business, upon which Kaizen will be implemented. 2. The living room to me was a ‘toy house’. For a second, I considered myself to be the "Alice of Wonderland." The room was stuffed with hoards of antiques, toys and numerous jigsaw puzzles. The credit for the décor of the rooms goes to Ann, who spends her leisure decorating the house and also solving the huge jigsaws that are imported from London. Dr Rao values hard work and it is obviously the reason why these jigsaws are framed and hung as decorative pieces.
