Gary Fernandez English II-C March 28, 2008 Dream Project In chapter one, Antonio has his first dream that was introduced to the reader; the dream was about himself floating over the llano watching his very own birth; but a conflict arises when the decisions of what Antonio should be when he grows up. A quote that was chosen to show some proof of their struggles on what the child should become when he grows up, “We must take with us the blood that comes after the birth. We will bury it in our fields to renew their fertility and to assure that the baby will follow our ways” (Anaya 5). That quote could possible mean that the mother’s side of the family wants to make sure that this child is going to follow what they want him to do. This interpretation of this quote says that if they were to bury the blood on the fields, it will make sure that this child would do what him to do what they want him to do like become a priest or follow the farming ways instead of doing any other job. Proof that the mother’s side of the family wants the child to become those two careers in life is when the novel had said, “…because her own dream was that I should grow up to become a priest” (Anaya 4). The mom says for Antonio to be a priest or a farmer like her brothers; proof of this is when she tells Antonio, “You will be like my brothers… You will be a man of the people…” (Anaya 8) From this quote an inference could be made that the mom could possibly be one of those moms who chooses what her child will do and doesn’t take no for an answer. With all of the information given from the previous two paragraphs, the dream could mean that the family struggles with the future of their child.
