FIGURE 1 (b) An experiment on osmosis was carried out by immersing potato strips in five solutions of different concentrations. Five potato strips of the same size were weighed. Each was immersed in distilled water and sucrose solutions of 0.2 M, 0.4 M, 0.6 M and 0.8 M. They were left for 30 minutes and then weighed. Figure 1 (a) shows the experimental set up, while Figure 1 (b) shows the initial mass of each potato strip. Table 1 shows the results of the experiment.

Construct a table to record the results of this experiment. Your table must contain the following items: - concentration of solutions - mass of potato strips - change in mass of potato strips

1 (d)

Based on the table constructed, draw a graph of change in mass versus concentration of solutions in the graph paper provided on page 8. [ 3 marks]

(i) In another experiment, a potato strip that was placed in a 0.86% sodium chloride solution remains unchanged.

Based on the above information, classify the following solutions according to their comparative osmotic concentrations: 1 (i)

0.25% sodium chloride solution , 0.50% sodium chloride solution, 0.95% sodium chloride solution , 1.10% sodium chloride solution, hypertonic solution , hypotonic solution

Q OIL PALM FACTORY

R HOUSING AREA

FIGURE 2 The Department of Environment (DOE) has received complaints from the residents of a housing area concerning the activities of an oil palm factory which is believed to have contaminated a nearby river. Based on the above situation, as a representative of the DOE, you are required to plan a laboratory experiment to study the degreel of water pollution at three different locations along the river, as in Figure 2. The planning of the experiment should cover the following aspects: • Objective of study • Variables • Statement of hypothesis • List of apparatus and materials • Technique used • Experimental procedure • Presentation of results • Conclusion [ 15 marks ] END OF QUESTION PAPER 4551/3
