Best Urban Freight Solutions
BESTUFS II is a co-ordination action funded by the European Commission under the 6th EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Demonstration. It is a follow-up initiative of the thematic network BESTUFS and aims to maintain and expand an open European network in order to identify, describe and disseminate best practices, success criteria and bottlenecks with respect to City Logistics. The BESTUFS II project started in 2004 with a duration of 4 years. Anyone who wishes to participate in BESTUFS events or to receive information should contact the administration centre (

LIST OF PARTNERS
Best Urban Freight Solutions (BESTUFS) is a network of experts, researchers, practitioners and policy makers focused on finding the best solutions to the problems and opportunities of freight distribution in the cities and towns of Europe. Europe is the most urbanised continent in the world, with 80% of the population living in towns and cities, the issues of how to supply goods and services to the citizens and businesses of the EU in a sustainable manner is a growing issue. In the first phase of BESTUFS, as an FP5 Thematic Network, the network was developed, 12 Workshops were held across the EU-25, 4 Best Practice Handbooks were written and published, 4 international Conferences were held , four clustering reports on urban freight research were issued, 15 nerwsletters published to a circulation of some 1200, and a web portal was developed that by 2004 has a monthly hit rate of XXX visitors. Themes identified by BESTUFS as of importance were addressed in the following workshops: • Urban freight strategies: laissez-faire or following a comprehensive strategy? • ITS in urban goods transport • Night delivery: a further option in urban distribution • Successful private public partnership (PPP) enhancing urban goods transport • Land Use Planning and Business Models for urban
Distribution Centres.
In the second phase of BESTUFS, BESTUFS II: an FP6 Co-ordination Action, the network is refocusing on medium cities, in delivering Best Practice Guides in 17 EU languages, in continuing the programme of themed international workshops and conferences, of the website and the newsletters, and also looking at how to develop best practice for data modelling in this arena.
• City Access Fees and urban Pricing: What are the Consequences for urban Freight Transport? • Rail based Transport: A disappearing Opportunity or a Challenge for urban Areas • Changing urban Transport due to E-commerce and E-Logistics
In our workshop and conference programme we aim to address themes outstanding from BESTUFS phase one, revisit topics which demand further attention, and explore new ones as they emerge in the field.
• Optimised City Distribution Vehicles as demanded by Transport Operators and Cities • City Access, Parking Regulations and Access, Access Time Restrictions and Enforcement Support
