Debby Swindler, owner of The Book Cellar, said it’s the atmosphere, aesthetics and appearance of her store that keeps customers coming back. “It’s a place people want to bring their friends and families,” Swindler said. The Book Cellar was voted Best Bookstore by Lincoln News Messenger readers, and in appreciation, Swindler is going to do something she hasn’t done in her two years in business – hold a book sale. As the used bookstore already sells books at half the cover price, Swindler plans to take it a step further at a book sale Oct.

Dojo takes martial arts prize for third year

For the second year in a row, FieldHaven Feline Rescue was voted Best Nonprofit Group/Organization by Lincoln News Messenger readers. “I was very excited and very proud of our organization, especially given that it’s the second year in a row,” said Joy Smith. The organization’s volunteers work very hard and they deserve the award, Smith added. FieldHaven, according to Smith, is very supportive of the community as a whole and she said that helped lead to the organization winning the award. “We’re here to help people,” Smith said.

Firefighters have passion for helping others

Capt. Scott Lombardi, a firefighter for the past 12 years, has served the city of Lincoln for the last six and a half years of that time. Readers of the Lincoln News Messenger voted Lombardi Best Firefighter. “I was happy to find out,” Lombardi said. With only 21 firefighters who serve “on the line” – crewing the engines and going on calls – Lombardi said the award is something that should be shared by the entire department. “We’re all the best of the best and we work
