Radiohead “The Best Of” Richard Thompson “Sweet Warrior” I recall in last year’s review that comments were made about the uncertain times ahead economically. A year on and still the number crunchers can’t decide whether we’re in recession, or whether it’s imminent. Luckily from our point of view it’s been business as usual, with an amazing amount of new releases and reissues coming out on vinyl. Substantial reissue campaigns such as Capitol Vaults, Sony Legacy and Back To Black have seen some classic albums back on the shelves in their droves, not to mention all the audiophile activity this year! Given the fact that the pound has been conspiring against us for half of 2008, it’s amazing that we’re able to report another record year. And that’s thanks to our incredibly loyal and ever growing customer database. Diverse Records managed two fantastic new releases with Eleanor McEvoy’s “Love Must Be Tough” and Dr John’s “City That Care Forgot” – with the newly announced Mark Olson not far behind - plus there’s a few more already planned! Eleanor’s album has recently be awarded a Hi Fi Plus album of the year accolade too. Thanks to Hi Fi Plus for their support! It’s been a mixed bag with regards to live music this year, with an emphasis definitely on quality over quantity. Highlights included a private performance by Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip at their record company headquarters, and the awesome blues rock of the Deadstring Brothers in a packed Le Pub in Newport! In the veterans class this year were two absolute classic artists, both pioneers in their field...and what a muddy field it was at the Hop Farm for Neil Young who was on fire back in the summer with a storming set. Then a few weeks later we were fortunate enough to get tickets for The Big Chill and witness Leonard Cohen on his first tour of the UK in years! He was absolutely sublime. Whilst CD sales are struggling against downloads, the vinyl market is stronger than it’s been for a long time. The support for the format from the record labels has been amazing, matched only by the enthusiasm of our ever growing database of vinyl junkies across the world! More mail order customers found their way to the shop than ever before, taking advantage of the opportunity to browse through the racks (and a bit of discount!!). Let’s hope for more of the same in 2009, with plenty of ventures already in the pipeline. Finally, I wish all our customers a Happy and Musical 2009!
