To assess candidates’ ability to construct sentences.



Task : To write grammatically correct sentences based on the picture with the given words to help them.





To assess candidates’ ability to transfer information appropriately without changing its original meaning from a text into a given framework. Task : a) To transfer information from one text type into a given framework. b) To give reason(s) to support ones’ decision or choice using correct tense and structure.





To assess candidates’ ability to construct a variety of sentence structures given in the recommended sentence patterns as in the syllabus, e.g simple and compound sentences and to assess the ability to express ideas using correct language structures and paragraphing. Task : a) To write a story using the given pictures and words as stimulus. b) To express ideas creatively.

 

 





Read the answer script as a whole. Place in bands. Reread and identify the errors and merits. Use the given symbols to highlight the merits and errors or additional details like new words or interesting expressions. Reconfirm band. Award mark accordingly.

SCORING CRITERIA A)

Variety of sentence structures e.g simple and compound.  All sentences grammatically correct.  New words and phrases used correctly.  Sentences describe what can be seen in the picture.  No spelling and punctuation errors. 

B)

New words used correctly.  A few spelling and punctuation errors.  Sentences describe what can be seen in the picture.  Two or three grammatical errors.  Mostly simple sentences throughout. 

C)

Language and vocabulary enough to convey meaning.  Sentences describe what can be seen in the picture.  Some spelling and punctuation errors.  A few grammatical errors.  Simple sentences throughout. 

D)

Poor language and vocabulary.  Sentences describe what can be seen in the picture.  Numerous spelling and punctuation errors.  Many grammatical errors but meaning is clear.  A few phrases that convey meaning are found.(chunks)  Direct lifting. 

SCORING CRITERIA A)

B)

Use language and vocabulary confidently.  Reasons comply with subject matter.(choice)  A few spelling and punctuation errors.  Two or three grammatical errors.  Simple and compound sentences. 

Language and vocabulary enough to convey meaning.  Some spelling and punctuation errors.  Most reasons comply with the subject matter.(choice)  A few grammatical errors.  Simple sentences throughout. 

D)

Poor language and vocabulary.  Numerous spelling and punctuation errors.  Many grammatical errors.  A few phrases that convey meaning are found.(chunks)  Direct lifting.  Choice stated but no reasons.  Choice not stated but reasons given. 

E.g simple, compound or complex.  All sentences grammatically correct.  Ideas well organized and linked to sustain flow and continuity.  Most new words and phrases used correctly.  Sentences written relate to subject matter.(theme)  One or two spelling and punctuation errors. 

B)

Use language and vocabulary confidently.  Most new words used correctly.  Most ideas are conveyed clearly.  Sentences written relate to subject matter.(theme)  A few grammatical errors / single word errors.  A few spelling and punctuation errors. 

C)

Language and vocabulary enough to convey meaning.  New words used correctly.  Sentences written relate to subject matter.(theme)  Some grammatical errors but meaning is still clear.  Some spelling and punctuation errors.  Simple sentences throughout. 

D)

Some ideas are vague.  Poor language and vocabulary.  Numerous spelling and punctuation errors.  Many grammatical errors / single words.  A few phrases that convey meaning are found.(chunks)  Direct lifting.  Most structural errors. 
