The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world and varies from 50 feet to 25 miles distance from the mainland, resulting in ranges of coral mountains and 90-10 foot channels. Optional day-trips that can be arranged for a nominal fee include: the Maya Ruin sites of Nim Li Punit, discovered in 1976, or Lubaantun, discovered about 1903; Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the world's first Jaguar Reserve; and a float up Monkey River---perhaps spotting manatees along the way---with a Jungle Trail Walk.
