MEMORANDUM To: Mr. Delaney From: Nicholas Aleman Date: March 13, 2019 Subject: Personal Brand Evaluation As I continue to develop professionally, it is essential that my peers perceive my professional persona in the manner in which I aim to present it. By analyzing the PeopleStyle personality, Culture Map scores, and core values that my colleagues identified me as having, I will have a better understanding of how I present myself. PeopleStyle Personality When I took the PeopleStyle self-assessment at the start of the semester, my responses indicated that I was a Driver. This result was the same as when I took the survey for the first time during my Sports Communications class. Being that I have continuously identified as this PeopleStyle, it was comforting to see that 5 of my 12 peers that were surveyed also viewed me as a Driver. However, it was somewhat surprising the see that almost as many people identified me as an Expressive. While my self-assessed assertiveness score was similar to the average score given to me by my colleagues, the average responsiveness score they gave me was much higher. This suggests that I appear to be more people-oriented and less reserved than I am. In a business world that is filled with collaboration, this misperception could actually benefit me. Culture Map Scores Communication In regards to the subtlety of my communication, my self-assessment aligned with the assessment from my peers. In both cases, I was seen as someone who prefers to communicate with more nuance in my message, and I had a high score in this area. In professional settings, this type of language may help in coming across as intelligent. However, I need to keep my audience in mind to ensure that I am concise when such a delivery is more appropriate. Evaluating The subtleness in my communication is also seen in how I evaluate others. I see myself as someone that always considers others’ feelings when delivering feedback, and my colleagues view me in the same way. When working in groups and providing constructive criticism, this is especially important, as unnecessary conflict should be avoided. With that said, it is also important to consider how others like to receive feedback and to accommodate those that prefer it to be more direct. Persuading When it comes to persuading others, I feel that I tend to start with the conceptual before moving into concrete evidence. However, my peers found that I am someone that puts examples first. At first, this surprised me, but then I reflected on the fact that I identify as someone that is more factual and less people oriented. This disconnect highlights that there could be an error in my

communication style. If I truly want to be conceptual in my approach, I need to make a conscious effort to do so. Scheduling Similarly to the area of persuading, there is a discrepancy between my self-perception and that from others in the area of scheduling. My peers view me as someone that is significantly more structured with schedules and deadlines than I do myself. This gap may be because I tend to treat social schedules in a more flexible manner, and perhaps that does not translate to the professional setting. Internally, I need to make the distinction between professional and social scheduling clear so that my self-evaluation aligns with the perception by others. Core Values Common throughout the responses from my peers was that I am a hard-working student that acts with integrity and a willingness to help others. From a young age, my parents instilled those ideals in me, and they’ve remained my guiding principles. For that reason, it made me proud to read those comments from my colleagues. I know I need a strong work ethic to achieve my career aspirations; however, I must always remember the morals that have gotten me to my current position, and I should look to help others, as I have had plenty of help myself. Through this external evaluation and subsequent self-reflection, I learned how important it is to stay true to who I am as I continue in my academic and professional pursuits. I will bridge the few gaps that exist between how I view myself and how I am actually perceived by reviewing my peers’ existing feedback weekly and asking for updated feedback on a monthly basis. If you have any additional feedback regarding my professional persona, please email me at [email protected]; I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
