LANDSCAPES

TRONA PINNACLES It is a clearly defined geological area, approximately one mile wide and three miles across. This unique landscape is made up of more than 500 calcium carbonate pinnacles rising from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake basin. The Pinnacles are as high as 140 feet, and were formed underwater 10,000 to 100,000 years ago when Searles lake was part of a link of Pleistocene lakes stretching from Mono Lake to Death Valley. The Trona Pinnacles stud the north Mohave desert with their jagged peaks and rocks leaning at crazy, unstable angles. In 1968. four years after the first Lost in Space exterior scenes were filmed, the Trona Pinnacles were designated a National Natural Landmark by the Department of the Interior. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and has become a popular filming location for movies and commercials. Miraculously, what sets Trona Pinnacles apart from many other sites like this is its lack of graffiti.

CASA GRAND Perhaps nowhere is the blending of modernity and the tradition of earth building more evident than at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Casa Grande was constructed between ad 1200-1450 by the Native American Hohokam near Phoenix, Arizona. In 1928, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., son of Frederick Law Olmsted the landscape architect most famous for the earthwork of Central Park in New York City, was acting as an adviser to the National Park Service. The desire by the National Park service was to create a shelter that both protected the ruins, while allowing them to have hierarchical presence. The Olmsted Jr. design was completed on December 12, 1932.

BOLJOON IN MY "GIBRALTAR" CINEMATIC MIND The name Boljoon is coined from the word “Boljo”, which literally means an “abrupt jut, a promontory or projection towards the sea.” It was founded in 1692 by the missionaries to spread the Christian religion. It consists of five barrios – excluding the poblacion or town proper. The poblacion is nestled cozily in a narrow coastal plain bounded by towering and precipitous cliffs on the north, hemmed on the western side by a range of luxuriant hills, pierced by the Boljoon River and fringed by the Bohol Strait on the East. It is reminiscent of Gibraltar, the high rocky cliffs forming an impressive backdrop to the simple dwellings of these hardy Boljoanons. This gigantic wall-like structure called Eli is found at the northern portion of the poblacion. It served as a natural barrier against the Spanish invaders, just like Gibraltar. Right on top of Eli still stands a solitary watch tower that is now covered with moss, fern and thick undergrowth like a faithful sentinel on a never-ending vigil. It is a favorite spot among nature lovers and just plain lovers, basking under the dreamy moonlight. Many a ladies’ heart were won on Eli and on particularly silent nights the wind carries their giggles.

A Field of Poppies It is a famous Monet landscape, painted by Claude Monet, a French impressionist painter. Mill Hill Watercolour painting by Robert Thome Waite RWS painted in 1867 and presented to the Marlipins Museum in honour of Henry Cheal in appreciation of his work.
