Glory to the gopés headed by Çrématé Rädhäräëé, who are famous as the beloveds of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the sweetness of whose intimate friendship with Lord Hari no one will ever have the slightest power to describe. Glory to Lord Hari who, seeing the very sweet love His dear devotees bear for Him, eagerly descended (to this world) in the form of a devotee, who is now splendid as gold, who is dressed as a sannyäsé, who is the son of Çrématé Sacé-devé, and who bears the name Çré Kåñëa Caitanya. Glory to Goddess Mathurä, the best and most beautiful of cities, most dear to Lord Kåñëa, beautified with His birth-pastime, the place where His

pastimes are narrated eternally, the place that, because it removes all sins and grants liberation and devotional service, is eternally glorified in this world. Text 5 jayati jayati våndäraëyam etan muräreù priyatamam ati-sädhu-svänta-vaikuëöha-väsät ramayati sa sadä gäù pälayan yatra gopéù svarita-madhura-veëur vardhayan prema räse jayati-all glories; jayati-all glories; vrndaraëyam-to Vrndavana; etat-this; mura-areù-of Lord Kåñëa, the enemy of the Mura demon; priyatamam-the most dear; ati-very; sädhu-pure; sva-anta-within; vaikuëöha-in Vaikuëöhaloka; vasat-than the residence; ramayati-delights; saù-He; sadäeternally; gaù-the surabhi cows; palayan-protecting; yatra-where; gopéù-the gopés; svarita-sounded; madhura-the sweet; venuù-flute; vardhayanincreasing; prema-the pure love; rase-during the rasa dance. Glory, glory to Våndävana forest, the place dearer to Lord Kåñëa than the transcendental realm of Vaikuëöha, the place where Lord Kåñëa eternally protects the surabhi cows, and where, sweetly playing the flute, He arouses the pure love of the gopés in the arena of the räsa dance. Text 6 jayati taraëi-putré dharma-räja-svasä yä kalayati mathuräyäù säkhyam atyeti gaìgäm murahara-dayitä tat-päda-padma-prasütaà vahati ca makarandaà néra-püra-cchalena jayati-all glories; taräni-of the sun-god; putri-to the daughter; dharmaräja-of Yamaräja; svasa-the sister who; kalayati-sees; mathuraya-of Mathura; sakhyam-friendship; atyeti-attains; gaìgam-the Ganges; muraharato Lord Kåñëa, the killer of Mura; dayita-very dear; tat-of Him; pada-feet; padma-from the lotus; prasutam-born; vahati-carries; ca-also; makarandamnectar; nira-of water; pura-of a stream; chalena-on the pretext. Glory to the Yamunä River, which is the daughter of the sun-god, the sister of Yamaräja, the friend of Mathurä, superior to the Ganges, and very dear to Lord Kåñëa, and which flows with what seems to be water but is actually the nectar of the lotus flower of Lord Kåñëa's feet.

Text 7 govardhano jayati çaila-kulädhiräjo yo gopikäbhirudito hari-däsa-väryaù kåñëena çakra-makha-bhaìga-kåtärcito yaù saptäham asya kara-padma-tale 'py avatsét govardhanaù-to Govardhana Hill; jayati-all glories; saila-of mountains; kula-of the community; adhiräjaù-the king; yaù-which; gopéka-by the gopés; abhiruditaù-proclaimed; hari-of Lord Hari; dasa-of all the servants; varyaùthe best; kåñëena-by Lord Kåñëa; sakra-of Indra; makha-the sacrifice; bhaìga-breaking; kåta-done; arcitaù-worshipped; yaù-which; säpta-seven; aham-for days; asya-of Him; kara-hand; padma-lotus; tale-on the surface; api-also; avatsit-rested. Glory to Govardhana Hill, the king of mountains, the hill the gopés declared was the best servant of Lord Hari, the hill personally worshiped by Lord Kåñëa when He stopped the indra-yajïa, the hill that for seven days rested on Lord Kåñëa's lotus hand. Text 8 jayati jayati kåñëa-prema-bhaktir yad-aìghrià nikhila-nigama-tattvaà güòham äjïäya muktiù bhajati çaraëa-kamkä vaiñëavais tyajyamänä japa-yajana-tapasya-nyäsa-niñöhäà vihäya jayati-all glories; jayati-all glories; kåñëa-for Lord Kåñëa; prema-pure love; bhaktiù-devotional service; yat-of which; aìghrim-the feet; nikhila-all; nigama-of Vedic literatures; tattva-the truth; güòham-hidden; ajïäyaunderstanding; muktiù-liberation; bhajati-worships; saraëa-to take shelter; kama-desiring; vaiñëavaiù-by the devotees; tyajyamäna-rejected; japamantra-chanting; yajana-Vedic sacrifices; tapasya-austerity; nyasa-niñöhamfaith; vihaya-abandoning. Glory, glory to devotional service in pure love for Kåñëa. Rejected by the devotees, finally understanding the confidential secret of all Vedic knowledge, and abandoning all trust in mantra-chanting, Vedic sacrifices, and severe austerity, liberation now worships the feet of devotional service. Liberation now yearns to take shelter of the feet of devotion. Text 9

jayati jayati nämänanda-rüpaà murärer viramita-nija-dharma-dhyäna-püjädi-yatnam katham api sakåd ättaà muktidaà präëinäà yat paramam amåtam ekaà jévanaà bhüñaëaà me jayati-all glories; jayati-all glories; näma-holy name; änanda-bliss; rüpamform; murärer-of Lord Krsna; viramita-stopped; nija-own; dharmaconventional religious duties; dhyäna-meditation; püjä-worship; ädibeginning with; yatnam-endeavor; katham api-somehow; sakåd-once; ättam-spoken; mukti-liberation; dam-giving; präëinäm-to the living entities; yat-which; paramam-supreme; amåtam-nectar; ekam-only; jévanam-life; bhüñaëam-treasure; me-my. All glories, all glories, to the all-blissful holy name of Çré Kåñëa, which causes the devotee to give up all conventional religious duties, meditation, and worship. When somehow or other uttered even once by a living entity, the holy name awards him liberation. The holy name of Kåñëa is the highest nectar. It is my very life and my only treasure.* Text 10 namaù çré-kåñëacandraya nirupädhi-kåpä kåte yaù çré-caitanya-rüpo 'bhüt tanvan prema-rasaà kalau namaù-I offer my respectful obeisances; çré-kåñëacandraya-to Çré Kåñëacandra; nirüpadhi-without limit; kåpä-mercy; kåte-granting; gaù-who; çré-caitanya-of Çré Caitanya Mahaprabhu; rüpaù-in the form; abhütbecame; tanvan-spreading; prema-of pure love for Lord Kåñëa; rasam-the nectar; kalau-in the age of Kali. Obeisances to boundlessly merciful Lord Çré Kåñëacandra who, appearing as Çré Caitanya, distributed the nectar of pure love of God in the age of Kali. Text 11 bhagavad-bhakti-çästräëäm ayaà särasya saìgrahaù anubhütasya caitanyadeve tat-priya-rüpataù

bhagavat-to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; bhakti-describing devotional service; sastränäm-of the scriptures; ayam-this; sarasya-of the nectar; sangrahaù-collection; anubhütasya-directly perceived; caitanyadevein Lord Caitanyadeva; tat-of Him; priya-dear; rüpataù-from the form. This book is bhakti literatures' essence, which was revealed by the Lord who is dear to the heart. Note: The Lord who is dear to the heart is Nanda's son, who plays the flute and whose handsome form gracefully bends in three places. By His mercy He appeared in the heart and revealed the truth of devotional service. Another interpretation is "Caitanyadeve" is {.sy 168}Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu" and "rüpa" is Çréla Ruäpa Gosvämi". Then the phrase becomes "which was revealed by Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé, who is dear to Lord Caitanyadeva". Text 12 çåëvantu vaiñëaväù çästram idaà bhägavatämåtam su-gopyaà präha yat premëä jaiminir janamejayam çåëvantu-may hear; vaiñëavaù-the devotees of the Lord; sastram-book; idam-this; bhägavata-of the Lord and His devotees; amåtam-the nectar; suvery; gopyam-confidential; präha-spoke; yat-which; premëä-with great love; jaiminiù-Jaimini; janamejayam-to Janamejaya. May the saintly devotees hear this confidential book, the Bhägavatämåta (the nectar of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotees), which Jaimini Åñi affectionately spoke to Mahäräja Janamejaya. Text 13 munéndräj jaimineù çrutvä bhäratäkhyänam adbhutam parékñin-nandano 'påcchat tat-khilaà çravaëotsukaù muni-of sages; indrat-from the king; jaimineù-from Jaimini; çrutva-having

heard; bharata-Mahabharata; akhyänäm-the story; adbhutam-wonderful; parékñit-nandanaù-Mahäräja Janamejaya, the son of Mahäräja Parékñit; apåcchat-inquired; tat-khilam-the remainder; sravana-to hear; utsukaùeager. Hearing the wonderful story of Mahäbhärata from Jaimini, the king of sages, and becoming very eager to hear more, Mahäräja Janamejaya, the son of Mahäräja Parékñit, asked: Text 14 çré-janamejaya uväca na vaiçampäyanät präpto brahman yo bhärate rasaù tvatto labdhaù sa tac-cheñäà madhureëa samäpaya çré-janamejayaù-Çré Janamejaya; uväca-said; na-not; vaisampayanatfrom Vaisampayana; präptaù-attained; brahman-O Brahmäna; yaù-which; bharate-in the Mahabharata; rasaù-the nectar; tvattaù-from you; labdhaùwas obtained; saù-that; tat-of that; çeñam-the remainder; madhureëa-with sweetness; samapaya-please complete. Çré Janamejaya said: O brähmaëa, the sweet nectar I found in your narration of Mahäbhärata I did not find in Vaiçampäyana's version. Please now sweetly finish that story. Çré Jaimini said: Of Çré Parékñit, who was the best of kings, and who by Çukadeva's instructions had become free of all fears, wise in all spiritual knowledge, and plunged in love for Çré Kåñëa, and who at that moment was about to ascend to his desired destination (in the spiritual world), his mother, Uttarä, who was a great devotee of Lord Kåñëa, who was flooded with love, and who was first distressed, and then, encouraged by her son, had become cheerful, asked: Text 18 çrémad-uttaroväca yat çukenopadiñöaà te vatsa niñkåñya tasya me säraà prakäçaya kñipraà kñérämbhodher ivämåtam çrémat-uttara-Çrémati Uttara; uväca-said; yat-what; sukena-by Sukadeva Gosvami; upadiñöam-taught; te-to you; vatsa-O child; niskrsya-extracting; tasya-of that; me-for me; saram-the essence; prakäçaya-please reveal; kñipram-quickly; kñira-of milk; ambhodheù-from the ocean; iva-like; amåtam-nectar. Çré Uttarä said: Son, as nectar was taken from the ocean of milk, please extract for me the essence of Çukadeva's teachings.

Çré Jaimini said: Mahäräja Parékñit, who was both affectionate to his mother and eager to repeat the very wonderful nectar history of Lord Govinda he had heard, respectfully said: Text 20 çré-viñëuräta uväca mätar yadyapi käle 'smims cikérñita-muni-vrataù tathäpy ahaà tava praçnamädhuré-mukharé-kåtaù çré-viñëurataù-Mahäräja Parékñit; uväca-said; mataù-O mother; yadi apialthough; kale-time; asmin-at this; cikirsita-desired to observe; muni-of silence; vrataù-a vow; tathä api-still; aham-I; tava-of you; prasna-of the question; madhuri-by the sweetness; mukhari-eager to speak; kåtaù-made. Mahäräja Parékñit said: Mother, although at this time I wished to follow a vow of silence, the sweetness of your question makes me eager to speak. Bowing down, by my guru Çréla Çukadeva Gosvämé's mercy, to the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead, who gave life to both you and your son, by the power of his mercy I will speak the beautiful Bhägavatämåta, the nectar of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotees, which the great devotees extracted with great effort, which is the great conclusion of the assembly of sages, and which is a great secret. Please listen with great attention. Texts 24 and 25 ekadä tértha-mürdhänye prayäge muni-puìgaväù mäghe prätaù kåta-snänaù çré-mädhava-samépataù upaviñöä mudäviñöä manyamänäù kåtärthatäm kåñëasya dayito 'séti çläghante sma parasparam

ekadä-one day; tirtha-of holy places; murdhanye-at the best; prayage-at Prayaga; muni-of sages; pungavaù-the best; maghe-in the month of Magha; prataù-early in the morning; kåta-performed; snanaù-bath; çré-madhavaLord Madhava; samipataù-near; upaviñöaù-seated; muda-with happiness; aviñöaù-filled; manyamänaù-considering; kåtärthatam-success; kåñëasya-of Lord Kåñëa; dayitaù-the dear one; asi-you are; iti-thus; çläghante sma-they glorified; parasparam-each other. Onnce, during the month of Magha, at Prayäga, the best of holy places, many great sages bathed in the morning, happily sat down near the Deity of Lord Mädhava and, thinking how to attain spiritual success, praised each other, saying "You are dear to Lord Kåñëa." Text 26 mätas tadänéà tatraiva vipra-väryaù samägataù daçäçvamedhike térthe bhagavad-bhakti-tat-paraù mataù-O mother; tadänim-then; tatra-there; eva-certainly; vipra-varyaùa great brähmaëa; samagataù-arrived; dasasvamedhike-Dasasvamedha; tirthe-at the holy place; bhagavat-bhakti-tat-paraù-devoted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. O mother, then a great brähmaëa devotee of the Lord came there to Daçäçvamedha-tértha. Text 27 sevito 'çeña-sampadbhis tad-deçasyädhikäravän våtaù parijanair viprabhojanärthaà kåtodyamaù sevitaù-served; açeña-complete; sampadbhiù-with wealth; tat-his; deçasya-of the country; adhikaravan-the proprietor; våtaù-surrounded; parijanaiù-by associates; vipra-the brähmaëas; bhojana-feeding; ärtham-for the purpose; kåta-done; udyamaù-effort. A wealthy landowner, he and his associates had come to feed the brähmaëas.

ŠText 28 vicitrotkåñöa-vastüni sa niñpadya mahä-manäù avaçyakaà samäpyädau saàskåtya mahatéà sthalém vicitra-wonderful; utkåñöa-excellent; vastuni-substances; saù-he; nispadya-collecting; mahä-manaù-the great soul; avasyakam-his regular duties; samäpya-completing; ädau-in the beginning; saàskåtya-fashioning; mahatim-a great; sthalim-place. That great soul performed his morning duties, set aside a large area, and brought many wonderful things. Text 29 sa-tvaraà catvaraà tatra madhye nirmäya sundaram upalipya sva-hastena vitanäny udatänayat sa-with; tvaram-haste; catvaram-a courtyard; tatra-there; madhye-in the midst; nirmaya-fashioning; sundaram-beautiful; upalipya-anointing; svaown; hastena-with the hand; vitanäni-awnings; udatanayat-lifted. He quickly fashioned a charming courtyard, set up many open tents, and anointed the ground with his own hand. Text 30 çälagräma-çilä-rüpaà kåñëaà svarëäsane çubhe niveñya bhaktyä sampüjya yathä-vidhi mudä bhåtaù salagrama-sila-of a Salagrama-sila; rüpam-in the form; kåñëam-Lord Kåñëa; svarëa-golden; asane-on a throne; subhe-beautiful; nivesya-placing; bhaktyä-with devotion; sampujya-worshiping; yathä-according; vidhi-to the regulations of worship; muda-with happiness; bhåtaù-filled.

Then he placed Lord Kåñëa, in His Çälagräma-çilä form, on a beautiful golden throne. Filled with happiness, and carefully following the proper rituals, he devotedly worshiped the Deity. Text 31 bhogämbarädi-sämagrém arpayitvägrato hareù svayaà nåtyan géta-vädyädibhiç cakre mahotsavam bhoga-food; ambara-garments; ädi-beginning with; samagrim-multitude; arpayitva-giving in charity; agrataù-in the presence; hareù-of Lord Hari; svayam-personally; nåtyan-dancing; géta-with singing-vadya-and instrumental music; ädibhiù-beginning; cakre-performed; mahä-a great; utsavam-festival. He offered delicious foods, costly garments and many other valuables to Lord Hari. Then he celebrated a great festival where he himself danced to the accompaniment of singing and instrumental music. Text 32 tato veda-puräëädivyäkhyäbhir vada-kovidän viprän praëamya yatino gåhino brahmacäriëaù tataù-then; veda-on the Vedas; puräëa-Puräëas; ädi-beginning with; vhakhyabhiù-with commentaries; vada-at speaking words; kovidan-expert; vipran-to the brähmaëas; praëamya-offering respectful obeisances; yatinaùto the sannyasis; gåhinaù-to the householders; brahmacarinaù-to the brahmacaris. Then he bowed down to offer respects to the brähmaëas, who could eloquently speak on the Vedas, Puräëas, and other scriptures. He bowed down to the sannyäsés, householders, and brahmacärés. su-bahün madhurair väkyair vyavahäraiç ca harñayan vaiñëavan-the Vaiñëavas; ca-also; sadä-always; kåñëa-of Lord Kåñëa; kértana-of the glorification; änanda-to taste the bliss; lampatan-very eager; su-bahun-many; madhuraiù-with sweet; vakyaiù-words; vyavaharaiù-with his actions; ca-also; harñayan-pleasing. Then with sweet words and polite behavior he pleased the many Vaiñëavas, who were always eager to taste the bliss of chanting Lord Kåñëa's glories. Text 34 päda-çauca-jalaà teñäà dhärayan çirasi svayam bhagavaty arpitais tädvad annädibhir apüjayat pada-the feet; sauca-washed; jalam-water; tesam-of them; dharayanplacing; sirasi-on the head; svayam-personally; bhagavati-to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; arpitaiù-offered; tadvat-then; anna-with food; ädibhiù-beginning; apujayat-worshiped. He placed on his head the water that had washed their feet. He worshiped them by giving them the food and valuables that had been offered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Text 35 bhojayitvä tato dénän antyajän api sädaram atoñayad yathä-nyäyaà çva-çågälän khaga-krimén bhojayitva-feeding; tataù-then; dinan-the poor; antyajan-the outcasts; api-also; sa-with; adaran-respect; atoñayat-satisfied; yathä-as; nyayam-is appropriate; sva-the dogs; srgalan-jackals; khaga-birds; krimin-and insects. Then he respectfully fed the poor and the outcasts, and he satisfied even the dogs, jackals, birds, and insects.

When everyone was satisfied in this way the saintly persons requested that he also eat. He and his associates then happily ate the remnants of the nectarean feast. Çré Närada said: O king of brähmaëas, Lord Kåñëa is very merciful to you. I have seen how in this sacred place you (have given) your money, property, generosity, and power. The learned brähmaëa then said to sage Närada: It is not true. My lord, what signs of Lord Kåñëa's mercy do you see in me? Text 43 ahaà varäkaù ko nu syäà dätuà çaknomi vä kiyat vaibhavaà vartate kià me bhagavad-bhajanaà kutaù aham-I; varakaù-insignificant; kaù-who; nu-indeed; syam-am I; datum-to give in charity; saknomi-I am able; va-or; kiyat; how much?; vaibhavampower; vartate-is; kim-what?; me-of me; bhagavat-to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; bhajanam-devotional service; kutaù-where? I am insignificant. Who am I? How much can I give in charity? What power do I have? Where is my devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead? Text 44

kintu dakñiëa-deçe yo mahä-räjo viräjate sa hi kåñëa-kåpä-pätraà yasya deçe surälayaù kintu-however; dakñina-southern; deçe-in the country; yaù-who; mahä-a great; räjaù-king; viräjate-is; saù-he; hi-indeed; kåñëa-of Lord Kåñëa; kåpäof the mercy; pätram-the object; yasya-of whom; deçe-in the country; suraof the Lord; alayaù-many temples. In the south is a great king in whose country are many temples of the Lord. This king is the real object of Lord Kåñëa's mercy. Text 45 sarvato bhikñavo yatra tairthikäbhyägatädayaù kåñëärpitännaà bhuïjänä bhramanti sukhinaù sadä sarvataù-everywhere; bhikñavaù-sannyasis; yatra-where; taithikapilgrims; abhyagata-arrived; adayaù-beginning with; kåñëa-to Lord Kåñëa; arpita-offered; annam-food; bhunjanaù-eating; bhramanti-travel; sukhinaùhappily; sadä-always. Sustained by eating food offered to Lord Kåñëa, many sannyäsés, pilgrims, and others comfortably travel through his country. Text 46 räjadhäné-samépe ca sac-cid-änanda-vigrahaù säkñäd iväste bhagavän käruëyät sthiratäà gataù räjadhäni-the royal palace; samipe-near; ca-also; sat-eternal; cit-full of knowledge; änanda-and bliss; vigrahaù-whose form; säkñät-directly; iva-as if; aste-stays; bhagavan-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; käruëyat-out of mercy; sthiratam-the state of standing still; gataù-has attained. Near the royal palace is a deity of the Lord. It is as if the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, whose spiritual form is eternal and full of

knowledge and bliss, has, out of His great kindness, personally come there, and is deliberately standing still without moving even slightly. Text 47 nityaà nava-navas tatra jäyate paramotsavaù püjä-dravyäni ceñöäni nütanäni pratikñaëam nityam-always; nava-navaù-newer and newer; tatra-there; jayate-is; parama-a great; utsavaù-festival; puja-for worship; drvyäni-articles; ca-also; iñöäni-valuable; nutanäni-new; prati-kñaëam-at every moment. In that place is always a newer and newer festival where at every moment many newer and newer valuable presentations are made to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because they are very eager to see the Deity of the lotus-eyed Supreme Personality of Godhead, because they are filled with happiness by tasting the remnants of food offered to the Deity, and because in this place they may meet many saintly persons, many devotees of Lord Viñëu come from foreign lands and permanently reside in his country. Text 51 deçaç ca deva-viprebhyo räjïä datto vibhajya saù nopadravo 'sti tad-deçe ko 'pi çoko 'thavä bhayam deçaù-the country; ca-also; deva-to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; viprebhyaù-and to the brähmaëas; räjïä- by the king; dattaù-given; vibhajyaworshiping; saù-that; na- not; upadravaù-calamity; asti-is; tat-of him; deçein the country; kah api-any; sokaù-lamentation; athava-or; bhayam- fear. The king worships the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the brähmaëas, and he has given his country to them as their property. For this reason, in his country there is no calamity, no suffering, and no fear. Text 52 akåñöa-päcyä sä bhümir våñöis tatra yathä-sukham iñöäni phala-müläni su-labhäny ambaräni ca akåñöa-without plowing; pacya-producing grains; sa-that; bhumiù-

ground; våñöiù-rain; tatra-there; yathä-as; sukham-much as one could wish; iñöäni-desided; phala-fruits; muläni-and roots; su-easily; labhäni-obtained; ambaräni-garments; ca-and. In his country the ground produces crops even without being plowed. The rain falls as much as one could desire, and excellent fruit, roots, and garments are very easy to obtain. Text 53 sva-svadharma-kåtaù sarväù sukhinyaù kåñëa-tat-paräù prajäs tam anuvartante mahäräjaà yathä sutäù sva-svadharma-their own occupational duties; kåtaù-performing; sarvaùall; sukhinyaù-happy; kåñëa-to Lord Çré Kåñëa; tat-paraù-devoted; präjaùthe citizens; tam-him; anuvartante-follow; maharäjam-the king; yathä-as; sutaù-sons and daughters. Righteously engaged in their various occupational duties, and completely devoted to Lord Kåñëa, all the people of his country are very happy. They all follow their king as if they were his sons and daughters. Text 54 sa cägarväù sadä nécayoga-seväbhir acyutam bhajamäno 'khilän lokän ramayaty acyuta-priyaù saù-he; ca-also; agarvaù-prideless; sadä-always; nica-humble; yogasuitable; sevabhiù-with services; acyutam-the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead; bhajamanù-worshiping; akhilan-all; lokan-people; ramayatipleases; acyuta-to the infallible Lord; priyaù-dear. Prideless, and always humbly engaged in the service of the Lord, he pleases everyone. He is very dear to the infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead. Texts 55 and 56

In the presence of the Deity regularly chanting the Lord's holy names with his brothers, wives, children, grandchildren, servants, government ministers, priests, and other associates, and in that sankértana personally dancing, singing transcendental songs, and playing musical instruments, he always brings great happiness to the Lord. Text 57 te te tasya guëa-vratäù kåñëa-bhakty-anuvartinaù saìkhyatuà kati kathyante jïäyante kati vä mayä te te-they; tasya-of him; guëa-of virtues; vrataù-the multitudes; kåñëafor Lord Kåñëa; bhakti-devotion; anuvartinaù-following; sankhyatum-to count; kati-how many?; kathyante-are said; jïäyante-are known; kati-how many?; va-or; maya-by me. A host of good qualities follow his great devotion to Lord Kåñëa. How many of them can I enumerate? Of how many of them am I aware? Text 58

Š Çré Parékñit said: Then Närada went to see that great king. As he was traveling in that king's country he noticed that the people were intently and happily engaged in the worship of the Supreme Lord. Happily playing his véëä, Närada entered the palace and could see the king there. çré-näradaù-Çré Närada; uväca-said; tvam-you; çré-kåñëa-of Lord Çré Kåñëa; kåpä-of mercy; pätram-the object; yasya-of whom; idrk-like this; räjya-of kingdom; vaibhavam-opulence; sat-saintly; loka-subjects; guëagood qualities; dharma-religion; ärtha-wealth; jïäna-knowledge; bhaktibhiùand with devotion; anvitam-endowed. Çré Närada said: You have great royal power, saintly subjects, a host of good qualities, piety, wealth, learning and devotion to the Lord. You are certainly the object of Lord Kåñëa's mercy. Text 61 çré-parékñid uväca tat-tad vistarya kathayann äçliñyan bhüpatià muhuù prasasaàça guëän gäyan véëayä vaiñëavottamaù çré-parékñid-Çré Parékñit; uväca-said; tat-tad-in this way; vistaryaexpanding; kathayan-speaking; aslisyan-embracing; bhupatim-the king; muhuù-repeatedly; prasasaàsa-glorified; guëan-the good qualities; gayansinging; vinaya-with his vina; vaiñëava-of Vasinavas; uttamaù-the best. Çré Parékñit said: Närada Muni, the best of Vaiñëavas, played his véëä and glorified the king's good qualities in song. Närada embraced the king again and again. Text 62 sarvabhaumo muni-varaà sampüjya präçrito 'bravét nija-çlägha-bharäj jätalajjä-namita-mastakaù sarvabhaumaù-the king; muni-of sages; varam-the best; sampujyaworshiping; prasritaù-humble; abravit-said; nija-of himself; çlägha-of praise; bharat-because of the abundance; jäta-produced; lajja-embarrassment; namita-bowed down; mastakaù-whose head. His head bowed down with embarrassment to hear so much praise of himself, the humble king worshiped the great sage Närada and then spoke

Devarñi Närada, my life is short. My power is very circumscribed, I have very little to give in charity. I am not independent. I am governed by fear. I remain under the dominion of the three-fold miseries. Why, without considering all these points, do you consider me, who am so unqualified, to be the object of Lord Kåñëa's mercy? The demigods have effulgent and very powerful bodies. They are always

worshiped by human beings. They are the actual object of Lord Viñëu's mercy. Text 66 niñpäpäù sättvikä duùkharahitäù sukhinaù sadä svacchandäcära-gatayo bhakteccha-vara-däyakäù nispapaù-without sin; sattvikaù-situated in the mode of goodness; duhkha-unhappiness; rahitaù-without; sukhinaù-happy; sadä-always; svacchanda-acara-gatayaù-independent in their actions; bhakta-of their devotees; iccha-the desires; vara-benedictions; dayakaù-giving. The demigods are sinless. They are situated in the mode of goodness. They never suffer. They are always happy. They are completely independent. They have the power to fulfill all the desires of their devotees. Text 67 yeñäà hi bhogyam amåtaà måtyu-roga-jarädi-håt svecchayopanataà kñut-tådbädhäbhäve 'pi tuñöidam yesam-of whom; hi-indeed; bhogyam-to be enjoyed; amåtan-nectar; måtyu-death; roga-disease; jara-old age; ädi-beginning with; håt-removing; sva-by their own; icchaya-desire; upanatam-obtained; ksut-hunger; trt-and thirst; badha-obstruction; abhave-in the non-existence; api-even; tustihappiness; dam-giving. Whenever they wish they can drink nectar that satisfies all their hunger and thirst and frees them from old-age, disease, death, and all distress. Text 68 vasanti bhagavan svarge mahä-bhägya-balena ye yo nåbhir bhärate varñe sat-puëyair labhyate kåtaiù

vasanti-reside; bhagavan-O lord; svarge-in Svargaloka; mahä-great; bhagya-of good fortune; balena-by the power; ye-who; yaù-which; nrbhiù-by human beings; bharate varse-on Bharata-varña; sat-punyaiù-by many pious deeds; labhyate-is obtained; kåtaiù-performed. My lord, by the power of their great good fortune these demigods reside in Svargaloka. The human beings who reside in Bharata-varña may enter that Svarga realm only by performing many pious deeds. Text 69 mune viçiñöas taträpi teñäm indraù purandaraù nigrahe 'nugrahe 'péço våñöibhir loka-jévanaù mune-O sage; visiñöaù-specifically; tatra-there; api-also; tesam-of them; indraù purändaraù-King Indra; nigrahe-in punishment; anugrahe-in kindness; api-also; isaù-the master; våñöibhiù-with rains; loka-of the world; jévanaùthe source of life. The most important of these demigods is Mahäräja Indra. He has the power to reward or punish. It is he who nourishes the world with rain. Text 70 trilokéçvaratä yasya yugänäm eka-saptatim yäçvamedha-çatenäpi sarvabhaumasya durlabhä tri-loki-of the three planetary systems; éçvarata-sovereignty; yasya-of whom; yugänäm-of yugas; eka-säptatim-71; ya-which; asvamedha-of asvamedha-yajïas; satena-with 100; api-even; sarvabhaumasya-of a human king; durlabha-difficult to obtain. For 71 yugas he is the master of the three planetary systems. If a human king performs 100 asvamedha-yajïas he will not obtain such a post. Text 71 haya uccaiùçravä yasya

gaja airävato mahän kämadhug gaur upavanaà nandanaà ca viräjate hayaù-the horse; uccaihsravaù-Uccaisrava; yasya-of whom; gajaù-the elephant; airavataù-Airavata; mahan-great; kamadhuk-Kamadhuk; gauù-the cow; upavanam-the garden; nandanam-Nandana; ca-also; viräjate-is. His horse is Uccaùisravä, his great elephant Airavata, his cow Kämadhuk, and his garden the Nandana. Text 72 pärijätädayo yatra vartante käma-pürakäù käma-rüpa-dharäù kalpadrumäù kalpa-latanvitäù pärijäta-with pärijäta; adayaù-beginning; yatra-where; vartante-are; kama-all desires; purakaù-fulfilling; kama-of all desires; rüpa-the forms; dharaù-manifesting; kalpa-drumaù-kalpa-druma trees; kalpa-lata-kalpa-lata creepers; anvitaù-with. In the Nandana garden are pärijätas and many other flowers that fulfill all desires, and there are also many kalpa-druma trees and kalpa-latä vines that also fulfill all desires. Text 73 yeñäm ekena puñpena yathä-kämaà su-sidhyati vicitra-géta-väditranåtya-veñäçanädikam yesam-of which; ekena-with one; puñpena-flower; yathä-as; kamamcould be desired; su-sidhyati-becomes perfect; vicitra-wonderful; gétasinging; väditra-instrumental music; nåtya-dancing; vesa-colorful garments; asana-delicious food; ädikam-beginning with. A single flower from that garden fulfills all desires. Indra's abode is filled with very wonderful singing, dancing, instrumental music, colorful garments, delicious food, and a host of other opulences and pleasures.

Text 74 aù kià vacyaà paraà tasya saubhagyaà bhagavän gataù kaniñöha-bhrätåtäà yasya viñëur vämana-rüpa-dhåk aù-ah!; kim-what?; vacyam-may be said; param-further; tasya-of him; saubhagyam-of the good fortune; bhagavan-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; gataù-attained; kaniñöha-bhrätåtam-the state of being his younger brother; yasya-of whom; viñëuù-Lord Viñëu; vämana-of Vämana; rüpa-the form; dhåk-manifesting. Ah! What more can I say about his good fortune? The Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Viñëu became his younger brother Vämana.
