Basic Cells Glossary The nucle us is in the cytoplasm. The nucleus controls all cell activity. It does this by controlling the enzymes present. It is situated both in a plant cell and an animal cell. Cell membra ne is the structure separating an animal cell from its environment or a plant cell from its cell wall. The cell membrane is a place that allows nutrients to enter the cell and waste products to leave. It is situated both in a plant cell and an animal cell. The cytopl asm is the place where most cell activities are done. All the functions for cell expansion, growth and replication (duplication) are carried out in the cytoplasm of the cell. It is situated both in a plant cell and an animal cell. Vacuol e is in the cell membrane and vacuoles perform functions such as storage, ingestion, digestion, excretion, and expulsion of excess water. It is situated only in plant cells Cell wall is a layer of material that is outside its cell membrane. It is the cell walls that give plant stems and wood their stiffness (rigidness). It is situated only in plant cells. Chl orop last is found in the cell membrane in plant cells and it contains chlorophyll and other colouring and is the place where photosynthesis occurs. It is situated only in plant cells.
