The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 "This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 "I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.“ 32 And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 "I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 "And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God." John 1:29-34

Introduction •

Everyone should have an encounter with Jesus as their Savior, and everyone should have an encounter with Jesus as their Holy Spirit Baptizer!!!

2. The Holy Spirit is not foreign to you. 3. Word declares that you can have more of the Spirit– a greater measure and dimension than you know right now.

4. We are living in the last days (“the last days of the last days”). Acts 2:16 "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

Why do we need this Holy Spirit Baptism? A. Baptism with the Holy Spirit gives you supernatural power! Acts 1:8 - “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you...” Luke 24:49 - “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endues with power from on high.” *Endued means “clothed.” Jesus promised to clothe His disciples with power that came straight from heaven itself!

B. God has promised us the Holy Spirit: Luke 11:13 - “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Acts 1:4 - “the Promise of the Father” Acts 2:39 - “For this promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

C. Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit Luke 4:1 - “Then Jesus, being filled with Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan...” Luke 4:14 - “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee...” Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed me...” Acts 10:38 - “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

D. The Bible commands God’s children to be baptized with the Holy Spirit Ephesians 5:18 - “Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” The Greek language bears out 4 important truths: A. It is in the imperative mood = Not an option, a suggestion; rather, a command! B. The verb tense is present progressive. This means continuous action “be being filled” or “be filled and keep on being filled.” The Holy Spirit baptism is not a one-time experience, but a continual, on-going experience! C. The verb is in the plural number. This means the filling is all-inclusive. Paul had more than the Ephesian believers in mind - he had all Christians in mind! D. The verb is in the passive voice. This means the subject of the verb is not acting, but being acted upon. Jesus fills with the Spirit. He does the work. Our job is to ask and to receive!

The NT record of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is found in Acts. A. Acts 2:1-4 - The Day of Pentecost. The initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Early Church. B. Acts 4:31 - A re-filling of the Early Church, just days after the Day of Pentecost. C. Acts 8:17 - Philip went to Samaria and won many converts to the Lord. Peter and John came to investigate. They prayed for first non-Jewish believers to receive the Holy Spirit, laid hands on them--and they were filled!

The NT record of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is found in Acts.

D. Acts 10:44 - Peter went to Cornelius’ house to preach Jesus. Cornelius and his family were Gentiles, and they were saved and baptized with the Holy Spirit, while Peter was still preaching the gospel! E. Acts 19:1-7 - In Ephesus, Paul water-baptized 12 men who were former disciples of John the Baptist. Then, Paul laid hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came upon them.

Preparing You Heart to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Spiritual Gifts Study

I. Clean heart Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without (holiness) which no man shall see the Lord: (Hebrews 12:14 ) We will never be truly filled until we are truly clean. We will never be truly happy until we are truly holy.

II. A hungry Heart And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Luke 11:9 Are you hungering for tongues? NO! You are hungering for power that God has promised. You are not hungering for an emotion although it comes and is an added incentive. But you are hungering for a closer walk with the Lord and the boldness and power to witness.

III. A believing heart He that believes on me, as the scripture says, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spoke Jesus of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) (John 7:38-39 ) IV. A Yielded Heart Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

How can I be baptized with the Holy Spirit? A. Make Sure Your Heart is Prepared B. ASK the Lord to give you the Holy Spirit. C. Spend time in PRAISE/WORSHIP; God’s presence comes down in power when we worship Him. “God inhabits the praises of Israel...” D. EXPECT to be filled; pray in full faith, not doubting.

What will happen? A. Your lips will begin to stammer. Isaiah 28:11 - “For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people.” The Apostle Paul quoted this verse in I Corinthians 14:21 in reference to speaking in tongues. Stammering lips often precede speaking with tongues. What is happening? God is preparing you for a supernatural manifestation. Yield your lips and tongue. B. You will experience an urge to speak in tones and sounds that are unfamiliar. God is moving you to a point where you will speak in a language you’ve never learned--a heavenly language!

C. You will speak in other tongues. While there is not total agreement among all Pentecostals, the common belief is that speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gives you the utterance, is the initial (but not the only) evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This occurred in 3 of the 5 accounts in Acts, and it is implied in Acts 8 (i.e., Simon the sorcerer saw something sensational that made him want to buy the gift of the Holy Spirit). [Using a volunteer, explain “as the Spirit gives the utternace” by having individual repeat French phrase].

Why speaking in tongues? (1) It is an unquestionable sign that you are filled with the Spirit. No man ordinarily utters a language he doesn’t know. To speak in tongues is to be assured that you have received the Spirit. (2) The baptism with the Holy Spirit empowers you to operate in the super-natural (miracles, healings, cast out demons, raise the dead, discernment, etc.). To operate in the supernatural, it only makes sense that you begin with the supernatural - i.e., speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives you the words! (3) It is the tongue that needs to be tamed first.

Other Evidences

I. Boldness and power to accomplish mighty works in Christ's name Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

II. Prophetic utterances and praises unto God. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no man understands him; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

III. It helps us to better fulfill Gods command to live a Holy and blameless life. John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

IV. Manifestation of various gifts in the life of the believer Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11, 1 Corinthians 12:6-8 V. A greater desire to intercede and pray Romans 8:26. Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

VI. A Deeper love and understanding of Gods word. Acts 2:42. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. VII. Deeper love and concern for others 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

VIII. To be more receptive to the operation of the Spirit Common trait in NT church was a desire to seek the guidance of the spirit. Ex. Choosing the next apostle, doctrines of the church, who to send as missionaries, etc. Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Summary The Holy Spirit baptism is a promised gift from God for every believer. It enables you to do what Jesus did and to prove to the world that Jesus lives to save lost mankind. If you have not yet received the Spirit’s power, I encourage you to ask and seek, until you are baptized with the Holy Spirit. Then, you will know the thrill of operating in the anointing and will experience the depth and dynamics of the Spirit-filled life!!
