radiates energy back at the earth. If the atmosphere were not present, temperatures on the earth would be much than they are. But activity is changing the atmospheres structures. As like carbondioxide are produced and released into the atmosphere, they absorb more of the earth’s radiation, and return more of it back to the earth. The energy which would otherwise escape, harmlessly into space is already increasing the earths temperature, though so far by only small amounts (about 0.050C) over the past 20 years.
