Australian Poets and Painters Tom Roberts (Artist) - Tom Roberts was born in Dorchester, Dorset in England. He was born on 8 March 1856. - Coming South, Mentone Beach and The Sunny South are some of his well-known work. His most famous painting is an oil painting called “Shearing the Rams.” He painted this in 1890. - “Shearing the Rams” was based on a visit to a sheep station in southern New South Wales. At the time some people believed that it wasn’t a very good painting and didn’t fit the description of “high art.” Tom Roberts greatly reflected Australian society because at the time, the wool industry was Australia’s greatest export.
