FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH of SPRINGDALE & THE CHURCH at PINNACLE HILLS

August 2009 A message from Nick Floyd, Associate Pastor/Preaching Assistant

I Can’t Wait for the Fall The fall season is one of my favorite times of the year for many reasons. Let me share with you some things that I am looking forward to in the next month or two as we move into the fall season.

in your walk with God? Maybe you need to reconnect with your church. Use the fall as an excuse to start fresh. Biblically, we don’t even have to wait for the fall. The Bible tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22–23)

Football season is back. Let’s face it, there is no better time of the year with Friday night ball games, Saturday mornings on the couch watching football, and Sunday NFL games. I love it all. SportsCenter during the late summer is filled with baseball and soccer highlights … oh my. Late summer is like the time leading up to your wedding day. It stinks, it is hard to be patient, and you are longing for the day to come. That is my life from about May–July as I wait for football season.

Let me encourage you to take advantage of this new beginning in the fall in a few different ways. First of all, use the fall as an opportunity to re-engage with our church. The kids are back in school, businesses are cranking back up, and we all get back into our normal routines. I encourage you to make the Worship Service and Connection Group a part of your weekly routine. Come weekly to join together with the Body of Christ to worship God and hear His Word preached. Then, connect with a smaller group of people in a Connection Group to build relationships and study the Bible together. Maybe you’ve never made your way into a Connection Group … remember, the fall is a new beginning! Kickoff for Connection Groups will be on August 23. Take the fall—yes, pun intended—and join with a group of believers in a similar stage of life as you.

I love the cool fall weather. The fall in Northwest Arkansas is beautiful as we see the trees change color. I love bundling up for Friday night games and then spending my Saturdays indoors watching cold weather games. (I am wondering if I have an addiction to football…) Hayrides, Thanksgiving, fireplaces … oh, I love the fall.

“I like new beginnings. I like the opportunity God gives us to start fresh.”

Thanksgiving is only a few months away. Growing up with family out of state, we really didn’t build a lot of traditions around Christmas. Instead, Thanksgiving was the holiday that we built tradition around. Surprise … surprise … this holiday for the Floyd family also revolves around football. For many years we woke up on Thanksgiving morning, headed out to our local high school stadium for morning practice before the playoff game, came home and ate Thanksgiving lunch, fell asleep watching football, then attended a bonfire/pep rally for the Friday night game. This is one of my favorite days of the year. Food, fun, football, and the Floyds … great combination. But fall also marks a new beginning. Kids start a new school year. Teams start new seasons. I like new beginnings. I like the opportunity God gives us to start fresh. I encourage you to take advantage of this new beginning. So often we may think, “Well, next year I’ll focus on this or that. I’ll do a New Year’s resolution to cover that.” Take advantage of the new beginning of fall. Is there some discipline you need to start again? Is there a priority that you have let fall by the wayside? Do you need to start fresh

September 27 will also serve as a new beginning of our 10:55 a.m. Worship Service at our Springdale Campus. Bradley Noblitt will be leading in worship each Sunday and the preaching will be a mixture of me twice a month, Pastor Floyd via simulcast/ video at least once a month, and other staff members. As the Marines say, we are looking for a “few good men.” We would say we are looking for “150 dedicated men and women” who will commit to make this service a success so we can reach more people with the gospel. We have set out three expectations of the 150: (1) Attend three Sundays a month, (2) Actively participate in a Connection Group, and (3) Commit to serve. We will take all the people interested in the 10:55 service and choose 150 of them who will be committed to these things. So whichever campus you attend, could it be that God is calling you to join alongside us in reaching more people through starting and growing this service? This is open to people from Springdale and Pinnacle Hills who may live south and want to attend somewhere closer to where they live. For more information, go to www.fbcs. net/1055 or e-mail us at [email protected].

eaching Northwest Arkansas, America, and the World for Jesus Christ. Most members of First Baptist Church of Springdale and The Church at Pinnacle Hills have committed their church’s mission statement to memory. Without even a glance toward the large, gold letters resting proudly above the Worship Center stage at the Springdale campus, any given church member might recite by heart the words—a testament to a church dedicated to reaching the lost for Jesus. Reaching Northwest Arkansas, America, and the World for Jesus Christ. It is a mission statement that we, as church members, believe in—a purpose we wholeheartedly support, take pride in, pray for. But just how familiar are we with our Missions Ministry? We hear the names of missionaries spoken from the stage. We applaud lives saved in a foreign land. But just how real is it for us?

Reaching Northwest Arkansas, America, and the World for Jesus Christ. On September 18–23, for members on both campuses, this mission statement, OUR mission statement, will come to life. On those days, the people of our church will have the unique opportunity to embrace missions like never before in our church’s history with the inaugural Acts 1:8 Celebration. Acts 1:8 declares, “But you will have power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth.” With the Acts 1:8 Celebration, First Baptist Church of Springdale and The Church at Pinnacle Hills will come together in commemoration of our commitment to the Acts 1:8 mandate. For six days, both campuses will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with missions during a time of celebration that will be educational, eye opening, and unforgettable. The Acts 1:8 Celebration is designed with three primary goals in mind: Personalize, Celebrate, and Mobilize.

Of the celebration, Doug Sarver, Minister of Global Missions, says, “We want to turn the ‘out-of-sight’ into something the people of the church can see, touch, and feel.” During the nearly week-long event, fifty-eight missionaries from thirty-three different ministries representing Northwest Arkansas, America, and the World will assemble on both campuses in hopes of bringing their mission work home to share with us. Missionaries to the countries of Brazil, Hungary, China, Honduras, and many others will be in attendance, as well as representatives of such organizations as Embrace Baltimore, Feed the Children, and Thirst No More. Each missionary comes with the desire to share their own distinct perspective and experiences through a personalized, intimate approach that will bring real life to what they do. Through ministry displays, guest speakers, break-out sessions with topics from America, the Rise and Fall of Christianity to China and East Africa: How Can You Make A Difference, and many more events, the Acts 1:8 Celebration will turn the spotlight on missions like never before.

“We want to rally our people into doing and being…We want our people to believe and say to themselves, ‘This is supposed to be done by ME.’”

Celebrate.

With the Acts 1:8 Celebration, the church will have the opportunity to celebrate what God is doing, has done, and will do in the mission work of both campuses. By taking a look back over the past year, the church will be given an exclusive view of our missions’ achievements and a peek into our exciting future. The Celebration will be a time of rejoicing over God’s faithfulness and witnessing first-hand how His blessings have been poured out upon our missionaries and their ministries.

Mobilize.

The Acts 1:8 Celebration will also seek to mobilize people for missions. “We want to rally our people into doing and being,” says Sarver. “Our prayer is through the week’s immersion into missions, the hearts of our people will be gripped like never before. This celebration will be a historic moment in moving our church forward in missions. We want our people to believe and say to themselves, ‘This is supposed to be done by ME.’” The Celebration is sure to challenge and empower God’s people toward the Acts 1:8 objective.

Reaching Northwest Arkansas, America, and the World for Jesus Christ. On September 18–23, these words will cease to be mere words, a mission statement on a wall. Instead, they will be given a face, a name. They will be celebrated. They will empower. On September 18–23, the words will come alive. “If someone misses this experience,” Sarver begins, “it will be like missing what happened at Pentecost. You will be asking, ‘What happened? Why are all these people so excited about the gospel?’ This celebration will be the single most exciting thing our church has done to share missions.” The opportunities to get involved in the Acts 1:8 Celebration are many, so mark your calendars for these six days in mid-September and prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience.

A Fantastic Summer!

Clint Smith, Minister of Spiritual Development - Springdale Campus & Mike Daniels, Campus Pastor - Pinnacle Hills Campus

Our ministries this summer have been fantastic! We have seen record numbers in almost every conceivable area but most importantly, we have experienced God’s hand move miraculously in our midst. Let’s take a moment and give thanks for all He has done this summer.

Summer Freedom Celebration Our worship teams have always celebrated God and Country in a magnificent way. This year with the added presence of Tim Lee, a Vietnam Veteran, our Summer Freedom Celebration once again honored our servicemen and women and pointed all people back to the cross of Christ. Many were in attendance to see and hear the sights and sounds and were treated to the transformational message of how Jesus led a man through tragedy to triumph. May God Be Praised!

Fireworks at the Crosses This 2nd annual celebration featured an outdoor festival feel with a band, tailgaters, hotdogs, ice cream, and a whole lot of fellowshipping on the lawn. The annual celebration at the crosses was marked by baptism, symbolizing the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. 117 individuals followed Christ, displaying their public profession of faith by being baptized by Pastor in an incredibly moving display of obedience. God moved miraculously in our congregation and we saw evidence of His hand on this spectacular night. The dramatic culmination of the evening was found in the area’s first fireworks display of the year. Spectators stretched from the lawn on the west of the property north to the Village on the Creeks, east to the Home Depot parking lot, and south to the Coldstone Creamery. This regional event touched thousands and we were all reminded of the reason we have to celebrate: freedom from the tyranny of evil, both in the United States and through the blood of Jesus. May God Be Praised!

Pastor Floyd named Chairman of the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force In the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, Dr. Johnny Hunt, President of the Southern Baptist Convention, was asked by the messengers of the convention to appoint a Great Commission Resurgence Task Force. Pastor Floyd was named to the task force of 22 members, and was also named as its chairman. This task force has a very large responsibility over the next year, as they will work toward bringing recommendations to the 2010 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida that will help maximize the Great Commission in our denomination. You can see the original document at www.greatcommissionresurgence.com. The document already has 4,000 plus signers, which was the impetus for this significant motion that was adopted. Pastor Floyd released a statement to Baptist Press, calling for 5,000 plus Southern Baptists to pray for this task force and its work over this next year. As church members and others who are interested in this ministry, please pray for Pastor Floyd daily in this new assignment that will attempt to mobilize persons and resources of the Southern Baptist Convention to finish the task of taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. The work started the day the convention ended, so please pray for Pastor Floyd now as he works with Dr. Hunt and the members of the task force in bringing these recommendations.
