Atom, tiny basic building block of matter. All the material on Earth is composed of various combinations of atoms. Atoms are the smallest particles of a chemical element that still exhibit all the chemical properties unique to that element. A row of 100 million atoms would be only about a centimeter long.
HISTORY The year 1938 continued to be a close follower of its predecessors in the investigation of the structure of the atom. The chemistry textbooks of 35 To40 years ago proclaimed the atom to be a solid, indivisible particle. In fact its very name, atom, came from the Greek word meaning indivisible.
Nucleus of atom Core of atom Area which electron revolve
The whole of the mass of an atom is due To the nucleus containing protons because the electrons revolving around it are of negligible mass.
About a Atom In
atom electron revolve around the nucleus and Proton and neutron are situated in nucleus, Proton has the Positive Charge and Electron has Negative charge.
J.J.Thomson proposed a model for atom in 1903. According to this model, the positive charge is spread over a sphere in which the electrons are embedded to make the atom as a whole neutral.
Structure of Sodium Atoms No. of protons in Sodium z=11 No .of Electrons in Sodium z=11 No. of neutron in Sodium=A-Z =23-11=12 No .of protons=11 No .of neutrons=12
Structure of Hydrogen Atoms First level 1Electron Proton =1 Electron=1 It has a atomic no=1
