Assignment #3 – Clichés Emily Massicotte- Finch Mr. Flood EWC4U1 March 21, 2019
Part 1: The sun was brighter than my future when I woke up. I checked the clock and it was already afternoon, we should have been on the road over an hour ago. Instead of crying over spilled milk, I decided it’s better late than never, so I made my way to the kitchen and began making the picnic. With no time to spare I cut up the fruit and sandwiches into hearts and flowers like a fancy pants. The teeth on the zipper was almost completely closed when I realized I forgot a very important part of our meal. I tossed two bright red apples inside the basket, because you know what they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. While running out the door and into the car we knocked over several decorations and shoved into the furniture like bulls in a china shop. Hours later we arrived at our destination, a beautiful lake bordered by both gorgeous rock and soft sand. I sank into the soft sand while we sat to enjoy our picnic. In the middle of our meal, my boyfriend began laughing very loudly. “What!” I exclaimed. He responds with increasing laughter. “C’mon, spill the beans!” I yell towards him. In order to respond he takes time to catch his breath and points behind us towards my bathing suit that was on a bench a few feet behind us. A giant white liquid formed a puddle upon it and was dripping towards the ground below. Stuff like this always happens to me, I am the unluckiest girl in the world. Blood was boiling in my veins, but I wasn’t going to let this ruin my otherwise very good day. I always pack two bathing suits anyways, so we walked towards the car and changed in order to take a nice dip in the water. Hours passed as we splashed around and sat like two peas in a pod. Suddenly, a breeze brushed past my bare stomach and I heard quick footsteps going towards the rocks. Upon sitting up I saw the figure of my boyfriend several feet away. He looked towards me and yelled “Let’s go, now or never!”, while running backwards. Butterflies filled my stomach as I trailed behind him. At the top of the cliff my blood turned cold; my boyfriend offers to jump in first after seeing the paleness on my face. Without a second guess or any fear he not only jumped in but enters the water with a few flips proceeding. Minutes felt like hours as my feet slowly walked along the rock until I reached the edge. In succession with my peak over the edge his head shot above the water and he informed me that it was a piece of cake. I wanted to jump in, but my feet felt like they were glued to the ground below me. I finally made the leap several
minutes later and I felt so free. I was met by my knight in shining armor when I got to the surface. Part 2: The sun unexpectedly blinded my eyes upon waking up which was my first indicator that we slept in much longer than planned. We should have been on the road over an hour ago. Throughout the minor inconvenience I remained positive and ran down to the kitchen to begin making the picnic. I sliced the apples with a crisp crunch and cut the sandwiches with ease. While I was packing my creations in the basket, my boyfriend came barging down the stairs and dragged me along with him. Glancing at the clock assured me that he was right to be rushed so I scrambled along with him, making sure to grab my beach bag along the way. Once we arrived at our destination the beauty of my surroundings left me in awe. The sand was so soft and golden which perfectly contrasted with the dark grey rocky alpine that seemingly went on forever. The lake was a beautiful deep blue color and was standing so perfectly still that the reflections of myself, the rocks, and the bright sun shining down were illustrated in the water in detail. With each step towards the picnic table my toes disappeared in the powdery sand. After a day of rushing and driving, my stomach was beginning to hurt due to my lack of food. As soon as we decided upon a spot to sit, I threw the lid of the basket off and shoved the delicacies found inside into my mouth. Amid our meal, my boyfriend began to hysterically laugh. Curious as to what he was looking at with such humor I glanced over my shoulder and a white liquid formed a giant puddle upon my bathing suit on the bench behind us and was dripping towards the ground below. Anger intoxicated me but the day was just beginning, and this was not going to ruin it. Luckily, an extra bathing suit was in the trunk of the car, so I threw on my flip flops and began sprinting toward the car. After hours of fun the calm ocean waves and warm heat from the sun left me falling asleep. Soon after I was jolted awake by the continuous yelling of my name and harsh, quick footsteps. I could feel the inside of my stomach being tickled because due to where he was running, I knew exactly what his plans were. Nonetheless, I trailed behind him. With each step closer to the top, I could feel the color leaving my face. At the cliff, without a second guess or a moment of fear, my boyfriend not only jumped in, but entertained me with some flips before plummeting into the water. As I began walking to the edge, thoughts were thrown across
my mind. My steps became shaky and even when I attempted to jump, my feet refused to come off the ground. With the many other thoughts in my mind, the idea of regret suddenly appeared. Would I rather let fear win and walk back down this rock and regret it, or jump in and feel amazing despite the fear? The answer was obvious to me at that moment. I leaped into the air and continued with my perfectly imperfect day.
