CC2040 English for Academic Studies (Health Care) Assignment 1 – Reflection on English Learning (10%; Individual) In this task, you need to reflect on your experience of learning English in school. As most HKCC subjects are taught in English, you will find learning academic subjects in the tertiary level more challenging than before. At this point, when you are just starting college, it is meaningful for you to “take stock” of how you have been learning English in the past, assess its efficacy, and think about what you can do to make improvements, so as to better prepare yourself for the challenges ahead. I. Expected Learning Outcomes The objectives of this task are to assess how well you are able to: ƒ reflect and critique on your English learning experiences and processes; ƒ write a well-structured paragraph that includes a topic sentence and supporting details; ƒ demonstrate English proficiency in vocabulary and grammar through appropriate and accurate usage in writing. II. Guidelines 1. In this task, you are required to write a reflective essay of 300 to 330 words, not only to look back on your past English learning journey, but also to plan for the days ahead, along the lines of thought suggested below: (a) Reflect on how you have been learning English in secondary school. What were the major strategies or methods that you used to learn English? Summarize those strategies and methods in an organised and thoughtful manner; (b) Think about your proficiency in English – what are your major weaknesses at present? Analyze critically why the strategies or methods outlined in (a) were not able to help you fully tackle the identified weaknesses; (c) Suggest what you plan to do in college in the coming two years to overcome those identified weaknesses. Be concrete and creative with your improvement plans, and give consideration to the fact that, at the tertiary level, you need to be an independent and self-motivated learner. In addition to the three points suggested, you may add an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph to your reflective essay. 2. Be frank and honest with your self-assessment. That way, your lecturer can get to know your strengths and weaknesses better, and give you feedback that will be pertinent and beneficial to you. 3. Your essay should be typewritten, in double-line spacing. Two-side printing is welcome.
