ASME Field Indicator Use to gauge magnetic fields The ASME Field Indicator is used to gauge the strength and direction of the magnetic field in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, Article 7. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE To verify the strength or direction of your magnetising field, place the ASME magnetic particle field indicator on the component with the pie section (covered by the copper plate) uppermost. Apply magnetic particles at the same time as a magnetising current. A suitable flux or field strength is indicated when a clearly defined line of particles form across the copper face of the indicator. If a line of particles is not formed, or if it forms in the wrong direction, you should change the magnetising technique or increase the current. Eight low carbon steel pie sections
