Course Description/Goals: Students will cover the main meridian, points located on the meridian, internal meridians and other associated meridians. Safety concerns with respect to needling and needle emergencies will be discussed. Students will learn how to needle safely and effectively while understanding the location, use, and anatomy with acupuncture points. Learning Objectives: To gain a better understanding on TCM on all levels. Students will use this information along with that taught in the 1st year ASM program to develop skills in point location and needling technique. The purpose of this class is to prepare students for clinic in which they will be dealing with patients in a confident and educated fashion. Evaluation: 1 Midterm Practical Exam 35% 1 Final Practical Exam 50% 3 Written Tests 12% 1 Written Safety Test 3% - Students must receive ≥ 80% in order to begin needling. Students receiving < 80% will need to repeat the test the following week and receive ≥ 80% before they can begin needling. Any student who receives < 80% on the second test may be withdrawn from the course. Attendance/Participation: Attendance and participation is MANDATORY in all practical sessions. Students must attend the section in which they are scheduled unless the instructor gives consent prior to the class. The teaching assistants will mark participation (pass or fail) during each practical session. Participation for each class includes: Arrival on time for every class
Actively needling points Attendance for the entire class Students must provide appropriate documentation for all absences. Only cases of extreme emergency and/or urgent medical situations with appropriate documentation will be considered. All absences must be brought to the attention of the instructor and the Associate Dean immediately (within 3 working days) after the event, or prior to the event if it is a foreseen
absence. An absence will be documented as a participation fail for the practical session missed. The teaching assistant and instructor will discuss any participation failure mark with the student. Any student receiving a failing mark for 2 practical sessions without consent from the academic department will be given a 20% penalty on their final grade for the course, and will be responsible for the missed information at their own expense. Any student receiving a failing mark for 3 practical sessions will receive a failure for the course. The instructor and/or the Associate Dean will review each case individually. Students who have missed 1 or 2 practical sessions with appropriate documentation or with permission from the academic department must make up the missed material on their own, and at their own expense. Students who have missed 3 practical sessions with appropriate documentation or with permission from the academic department will need to repeat the course.
