Her Excellency

Heng Chee Chee Singapore's Ambassador to the U.S.

Chan Heng Chee took up her appointment as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States in 1996. Prior to her appointment, she was the Executive Director of the Singapore International Foundation (which created a Singapore version of the Peace Corps) and Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. She was the founding Director of the Institute of Policy Studies. She has served as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was concurrently High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. Ambassador Chan has received a number of awards including Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Letters from the University of Newcastle, Australia; and the University of Buckingham (United Kingdom). She was named International Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women in 1998 and she won Singapore's inaugural "Woman of the Year, Award”. She received the National Book Award in the non-fiction section for "A Sensation of Independence: A Political Biography of David Marshall" in 1986 and the National Book Award for "The Dynamics of One Party Dominance: The PAP at the Grassroots" in 1978. Ambassador Chan has served as a member on the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the International Council of the Asia Society. She received from the Government of Singapore The Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 1999 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 2005. Ambassador Chan was educated at the University of Singapore and Cornell University.

Pierre-François Landry, Associate Professor of Political Science, received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2000. He has been affiliated with the Research Center for Contemporary China since 1997. His research interests focus on Chinese politics, comparative local government, and quantitative comparative political analysis. He is currently writing a book tentatively titled "The CCP and Local Elites in Post-Deng China". Articles in progress include "Explaining Party Membership in Urban China" and "GPS sampling for social science survey research in China" based on an experiment in spatial sampling methodology that relies on the Geographical Positioning System to survey populations that are difficult to enumerate.

William C. McCahill

McCahill, Jr. is an authority on Chinese government and politics. As former Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Mr. McCahill played a key role in concluding the 1999 WTO U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Agreement. Before joining JL McGregor & Company, Mr. McCahill was the senior international business advisor of the law firm WilmerHale, where he helped foreign companies overcome the challenges and complexities of doing business in China. Mr. Woo is President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He is Canada's representative on the Standing Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and is responsible for PECC's annual State of the Region report. Mr. Woo is on the management board of the National Centre of Excellence in Immigration Research at UBC and Simon Fraser University (Metropolis BC), and is an advisor to the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Centre and the Asian Development Bank. He is also on the International Advisory Council of the Asia Society in New York. In December 2008, Mr. Woo was appointed by the Premier of British Columbia to the province's Economic Advisory Council. He was educated at Lester B. Pearson College, Wheaton College, the University of Cambridge, and the University of London.

The Internationalization of Entrepreneurship discussion presents two professors who have studied the rise of entrepreneurship in Asia. Professor He and Professor Liu will deliver a comparative study of the internationalization of small and medium size entrepreneurial firms in China and India. They will also discuss the changing role of marketing in Asian countries.

Professor Ben Liu has Lender a Ph. He teaches Marketing Management, New Product Development, International Marketing, International Business, Promotion Management (including Integrated Marketing Communication), Marketing Research, Marketing Strategy, Negotiations, Business Marketing. Professor Liu is a member of The International Association for Conflict Management (IACM), The Institute for Operation Research and Management Science (INFORMS), American Marketing Association (AMA), Association for Consumer Research (ACR), Academy of Marketing Science (AMS), and Strategic Management Society (SMS).

John Jiang

Jianxin Jiang is a business executive with fourteen years of experience in information technology and information risk management. Dr. Zhiwu Chen Yale Professor of Finance

Dr. Chen is Professor of finance at the School of Management at Yale University. Before joining Yale, Dr. Chen was Professor of finance at the Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Chen is well known for his leading research in the academic world of finance. His research covers a wide range of topics, with a focus on stock valuation, investments, and financial options and futures markets. Dr. Chen won the prestigious Merton Miller Prize in 1996 for his research on demographic changes and their impact on financial markets. He also received the Chicago Board Options Exchange Competitive Research Award in 1996 for his research on the Japanese stock market and related derivatives products. He has also been active in portfolio management since early 1992. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in finance in 1990, a M.Ph. and M.A. in 1988, all from Yale University. He earned his M.S. degree in systems engineering from the Changsha Institute of Technology in 1986, and a B.S. in computer science from the Central-South University of Technology in 1983, both universities in China.

Dr. K. Thomas Liaw

St. Johns Professor of Economics and Finance Dr. Liaw holds his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He is the author of several books on investment banking and financial markets. His recent book publication is The Business of Investment Banking: A Comprehensive Overview, second edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2006. He also recently published an article on China’s accession into the WTO and China’s financial markets. In addition, Dr. Liaw has published in the areas of capital markets, insurance, banking, repurchase agreements, and risk management. He is an associate editor for Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies. Dr. Liaw’s principal areas of teaching and research interests include asset management, capital markets, risk management, and investment banking. His current projects include risk management for financial institutions, equity and fixed-income trading strategies, and China’s financial markets. He served as president of the Chinese American Academic and Professional Society for 2005. He is a director of a bank. Dr. Liaw serves as an advisor to financial firms. He speaks on various subjects of investment banking and capital markets at academic institutions, executive programs, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, the World Bank symposium, Harvard China Review conference, and Information Management Network conference.

Raghav Nandagopal

General Partner, Exigen Capital Raghav Nandagopal is a General Partner of Exigen Capital with focus on investments in Financial Services, Media, Communications and Government sectors. Raghav has over 20 years of operating, technology and investing experiences with over 9 years in the PE industry.
