author: samruam singh publication: 1975 setting: bangkok, thailand point of view: this story is told from a third-person point of view. this is important because it gives us input and lets us see everything that is going on with every character. we are also able to tell how each and every character is feeling. the end of the vietnam war was in 1975, which was also the year this story was written. this was also the year that tailand got the nicknme of a "sex tourism" place. lung maa: lung maa is the father in this story. he produces his own crops which he sold for a living. these included gralic and rice. influences: this story has led to charities being created in order ot prevent situations such as these to occur throughout the world. the nepalese youth opportunity foundation was created in order to help prevent poor families in nepal from selling their daughters for money. the movie "taken" can also relate to the plot and situations in this story. daughter: the daughter of this story is sold for prostitution. her family needs money to pay for her mother's hospital expenses. she is sent to bangkok with yai phloy. http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/414/video.html recap: paa saeng was in the hospital due to an intestinal problem. her family was unable to apy for the expenses because the father, lung maa, lost money in all of his crops. because of this, they were forced to sell their daughter to yai phloy. "the following year, the garlic prices dropped... that year began his downward cycle". "the price of rice dropped... forcing him to give up his new plot of land to his creditor." " 'if it keeps on like this, i'm afraid i's going to have to ask to claim your land and house.' " "daughter for sale" paa saeng: paa saeng is the mother of the story. she is in the hospital suffering from an intestinal problem. her family has no money to pay for the blood and surgey that was needed to sustain her life. she is the reason for what the family has to do. climax: the climax of the story is when the price of the fathers crops (garlic and rice) drops significantly. the father is unable to make a profit. eventually, his debt increases to more than the price of the plot of land he inherited from his parents. "lung maa, knew perfectly well what kind of work the girls who went with yai phloy did in bangkok..."

"...would be forced into hell in bangkok." important quote: " 'phii maa, the matter has happened and nothing can be done, so we might as well let it pass. we'll help each other to share the burden of our demerit. it's just as if she has gone off and gotten a husband, only that she doesn't have a real husband... by the time she can earn the money to help her parents, i woner how many husbands she will have to have..." yai phloy: yai phloy is a female who grew up as a prostiute. her family was in need of money, just as lung maa's was. when she was no longer able to sell herself, she turned to selling young females instead to pay of her families debt. this story takes place in bangkok, thailand. the selling of women, particularly daughters has been common in thailand for many years. prostitution is commonly known in this region of the world. it has gained recognition as a "sex tourism" place. this explains the main reasoning why this story was written and set in this area of the world. this quote is important because it shows that the family is recognizing that their daughter has a new life. they must come to realization that they can't do anything about the situation and that they must let their daughter's new life begin. the mother feels mortified that her husband sold their eldest daughter to a former prostitute. although the father seems unloving enough to sell his own daughter, it shows his love and care for his wife. they know that it is going to take some time for their debt to be paid off and they wonder how much their daughter will have to go through in order to satisfie her families needs. samruam singh was born in bangkok. she was a thai author, scholar, and activist. she was born in 1949 and died in 1996. from different parts of the text, we are able to infer that the story takes place in thailand. also, the author is from thailand giving us a hint that this is where the story took place. characters: lung maa yai phloy paa saeng daughter "he was so desitute that he had to sell his daughter."

Early life and education[edit] Surasingh was born in Thonburi, an area of Bangkok.[2] Although he was born in the Bangkok area, his mother moved there from northern Thailand's Lampang Province, and his father came to Thonburi from northeastern Thailand for medical school. At the age of four or five Surasingh moved with his family to his mother's home village in Lampang where his mother sold sweets at the market and his father was a medic.[3] Although Surasingh was educated at one of Lampang's finest private schools, Surasinghsamruam's family was not wealthy; Surasingh sold flowers to pay his living costs. In 1973, Surasingh completed a B.A. in Education from Chiang Mai University.[3]

Educational career and social activism[edit] After completing his B.A. Surasingh placed 2nd in the national civil service exam. He then went on to teach at the southern teacher training college of Nakhon Sri Thammarat.[3]Surasingh proved himself an outstanding teacher, earning a double promotion while in Nakhon Sri Thammarat. In 1975, he took a position teaching at Chiang Mai Teachers College.[3] Samruam Singh was an award winning author that won the Cho Karaket prize for his short story "The Necklace" and was nominated for Thailand's national book award for another one of his works. His subjects included issues related to rural Thailand.[4] Furthermore, he was an advisor to Thailand's minister of industry.
