Fashion Designer Research Project : Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel When and where was Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel born? ● Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was born in Saumur, France, on August 19, 1883. How did Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel get involved in the fashion industry? ● Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel at the age of 20 years old became friends with Etienne Balsan, he said he’d help her start a military business, but soon after becoming friends with Etienne Balsan she left him to become friends with his richer friend Arthur “Boy” Capel. Coco ended up opening her first shop in 1913 in Paris, where she sold hats. She later started making dresses on a chilly day out of jersey. What was Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s inspiration? ● Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was often inspired by simple, practical, and manly things. What type of styles did Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel design? ● Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel created women’s fashion. What were the major steps in Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s career? ● Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first shop in Paris in 1913 and soon after opened another shop, where she only sold hats and a limited variety of clothing. In 1914 at the beginning of World War I, Chanel changed the things she was making for women to be more “free”. Meaning, with Chanel's new designs, women wouldn't have to wear corsets and they could do more active things for the war. In 1919, at the age of 32 years old, Chanel was now being recognized and Coco Chanel was becoming a household name. How did Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel work, and whom did she work with?
