Apollo Review

On Saturday 3 May Leading Cadet Murray represented the Unit and the entire Sea Cadet Corps playing in the national massed bands at Twickenham for the Army vs. Navy rugby match.
Forthcoming events • 18-20 July: District Training Course (Pulling and Powerboating - applications to PPO White) • 25-30 July: Pier Cellars Summer Camp (Unit closed on Friday 25 and Tuesday 29 July) • 6 August: Unit Management Committee Meeting (Parents and Supporters welcome) • To be confirmed: Summer BBQ • 5-7 September: District Training Course (Seamanship, Chartwork and Meteorology - applications to PPO White) For more forthcoming events see http://units.ms-sc.org/marlow/ activities
Leading Cadet Murray joined approximately 100 cadets from all around the country in playing a 30 minute presentation to help the crowd warm up their voices before the start of the game, culminating in the National Anthem. Although she is also
skilled in the side drum and bugle through her time in the band at the Unit, Leading Cadet Murray played the saxophone at this event.
Cadet Murray, who particularly enjoyed herself, is already looking forward to future massed band events where she can represent the Corps.
In total the crowd for the match was estimated to be 50,500, making this one of the largest events that a Sea Cadet band has ever played to.
Unfortunately, even with the Sea Cadets spurring them on, the Royal Navy was unable to reverse its eight year losing streak, with the Army winning this fixture 22-11.
All those present, including the Unit Training Officer, Petty Officer Chloé White thought the band’s performance was exceptional and Leading
Nevertheless it was a fantastic event for raising funds for and the profile of the Sea Cadets nationally.
Bag packing at Waitrose Cadets, members of staff and Management Committee members packed bags at Waitrose in Marlow on Saturday 24 May to raise funds for the Unit. The six people present during the day raised
£461.32 between them which will be used in part to fund some of the operational costs of our building. The day also gave an opportunity to expand our profile in the local area with a number of
people expressing an interest in joining as cadets. A massive well done to all those who took part, particularly Able Cadet Smith and New Entry Hughes who were present for the whole day
Communications success During April and May the Unit’s staff was supplemented by Petty Officer Chris Edge from Maidenhead, who joined us to teach Communications Class 3 to all of the Senior Cadets. Marlow Unit has not had a strong Communications presence for many years but it is hoped that this course will encourage some of the cadets to take it further and eventually instruct it to their peers. Over the course of five parade nights, Petty Officer Edge covered topics including how to send messages over a radio
network, communicating with flags and safety when using communications equipment. After a short test, mainly dealing with the practical skills involved in the course, seven cadets passed and were awarded the specialisation. Our thanks go to Petty Officer Edge and his
Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Alan Fleming, who helped organise this detached loan duty.

From 12 to 18 April, Able Cadet Smith sailed on board the Sea Cadet Corps’ flagship, TS Royalist. Able Cadet Smith joined the ship in London and sailed around the South coast to Ramsgate. She was also lucky enough to be on board when the ship travelled to both Belgium and France! TS Royalist is a two masted, square-rigged
brig offering 24 cadets per week the unique opportunity to sail offshore. It leads the Corps’ offshore fleet, which also includes a power vessel, which Leading Cadet Murray and New Entry Rhodes are booked to go on later this year, and two yachts. The trip was made available to Able Cadet Smith by the Unit Management Committee in recogni-
Able Cadet Smith hopes to go on board again next year with the aim of continuing to develop her skills to the point where she can take charge of aspects of the ship’s control as a Watch Leader. Other cadets interested in sailing on T.S. Royalist should speak to Able Cadet Smith for more information and then get their requests in to the Training Officer to book their place!
Marlow Regatta at Dorney lake On Sunday 21 June four cadets and two adult volunteers from the Unit helped out at the Marlow Regatta at Dorney lake.

Able Cadet Smith, New Entry Roberts-Moore, Junior Cadet Hall and Junior Cadet Roberts worked exceptionally hard all day assisting with the lane management and timekeeping at the event which saw some of Britain’s elite rowers (including the Great Britain Women’s team) racing.
Join us! We are currently recruiting cadets, members of staff and Unit Management Committee members at Marlow Unit. Boys and girls aged between 10 and 18 are welcome to join the Unit as cadets and will get an opportunity to take part in the many activities we have to offer.
Particular thanks go to the younger cadets in attendance for whom it was their first event outside the Unit. All those present had a thoroughly enjoyable day, which was helped by fantastic weather. As a show of appreciation for their hard work the Marlow Regatta Committee have kindly offered to make a donation of £250 towards the operational costs of the Unit.
tion of her excellent efforts fundraising for the Unit in 2006. Unfortunately courses onboard are so popular that she had to wait until now in order to get a place.

Boatswains store renovations update On Saturday 31 May the staff and Unit Management Committee spent the day clearing out the Unit’s old garage to enable work to commence to transform it into a purpose built boatswain’s store and marine workshop. The garage, which had previously been used as a classroom, has remained largely unused since the mid-1990s. However a large amount of effort has been put in by the Unit Management Committee to secure the funds for this classroom and donations from the Marlow Society and Trinity House mean that we hope to have the work, which includes complete electrical rewiring, repainting the entire room and the installation of desks and storage, completed by the end of the summer.
If you are too old to join as a cadet but still wish to get involved in these activities you could consider volunteering as a member of the instructional staff. If you have specialist expertise which you can pass on to the cadets that is excellent but if you don’t then we can provide you with training to instruct a variety of subjects. No previous experience is required to join our staff. Finally our Unit Management Committee is looking for volunteers to help with the crucial fundraising required to keep the Unit afloat. Any DIY skills would also be much appreciated here as there is always work to be done around the building. If you are interested please contact the Commanding Officer using the details at the top left of this page.
