MEDICAL High Accuracy Material Winding Products used – DLS, GV3 AND MCS Accurate winding of vascular grafting material has to be controlled within very precise limits to ensure the material functions correctly following surgery. To do this a combination of DLS, GV3 and MCS machine frame were used. A DLS3, around 1.5 metres in length, guides the tape carrier accurately parallel to the mandrel. By synchronising the rotational speed of the mandrel with that of the DLS carriage movement, the tape can be wound onto the mandrel ultimately producing a tube of material. The whole mandrel is then baked in an oven and the resultant tube is released from the mandrel. The GV3 slide performs an adjustment motion for each mandrel length and ensures uniformity of process. Duty Cycle is very slow hence the use of stepper motors for both carriage linear and mandrel rotational motion. The Stepper Motors and associated control were provided by our motion control partners Smart Drive Ltd. Consistent smooth motion is vital for successful stretching and winding of the material and the DLS with high precision ground slides and smooth double row bearings ensured this Customers requirement was met. To make assembly easy the whole machine structure was made from our MCS aluminium frame system.
